Just because the pants fit, doesn’t mean you should wear them

By , August 7, 2008 10:20 pm

Would you believe me if I told you I’ve been too busy to write a post about my Saturday driving (okay, riding) a Lamborghini Gallardo?

No? Yeah, I wouldn’t believe it either. I mean, who doesn’t have time to write about an amazing experience like that?

The truth is, I’ve been wallowing in self pity since I uploaded Saturday’s photos on my computer and realized that, even though I’ve lost 20 pounds, I still look like a giant blob. I’m eating healthy (I didn’t even gorge myself as planned last weekend!), and I’m making time to exercise… but I’m just disappointed in myself for getting this… big.

Oh well… on with the show…

Last weekend was a lot of fun. Andrew and Megan (Steven’s brother and his girlfriend) arrived in Chicago on Friday. I was really excited to spend some more time with Megan because they’ve been dating since the holidays but I’ve only met her once, and really wanted to get to know her better! Even though we got to hang out for a bit Friday night, I wish we would have had more time to chat.

The rest of the family (my parents, sister, brother and his wife, and Steven’s parents) arrived while we were picking up the Lamborghini in the Chicago Loop.

After we picked the car up (and had to fill it up with gas!!!), Steven and I drove it up Sheridan Road, along Lake Michigan… in the rich neighborhoods. Then, he stopped at our favorite bakery to pick me up a surprise birthday cake! We arrived at home, and nearly everyone was there, ready to “Ooo” and “Ahh” over the car. Even some neighbor that I’ve never seen before came to look at it.

(Wow, this is getting really “Dear Diary.”)

Steven gave everyone a ride (9 people!) while I stayed inside and “entertained.”

Then the two of us drove it back to the city. Or should I say, sat in it in traffic? Sadly, sitting in a Lamborghini Gallardo in the Edens sucks just as much as sitting in any other car. Except, in any other car, you don’t have all the staring, drooling, thumbs up, waving, and “camera-phoning.”

I think it is fair to say that everyone was pretty stoked to ride in it.

I liked it. It’s quick to take off (0-60 in 4 seconds, yes we tested), sleek and sexy, and fun to ride it. Exhilarating.

But… I’ve also ridden in a Ferrari F430. And the Gallardo isn’t as smooth, doesn’t sound as great from the inside, or feel as comfortable.

But it still kicks ass.

Listen to it purr under the Chicago highways…

How fast do you think we were going here?

We finished the day by going to my favorite restaurant, Red Robin, with the whole family.

This brings me to another point, or rather, question: do you have any family or friends that totally bring out the silly in you?

That seems to be my younger sister. I am not sure how we ended up sitting next to each other at dinner (what I mean is, Steven was on the other side of the table), and I feel sorry that Andrew and Megan had to sit across from us… because my sister ended up making me laugh so hard that I actually had to spit my food out into a napkin.

We get totally silly when we are together, and I love it. I wish she would hurry up and graduate and move out here already!

All of my family left Saturday evening, but Steven’s parents stayed until Sunday, so that was nice.

But I am still worn out from it all.

Check out even better photos of the car on Andrew’s blog! And leave some comment love!

The pic of you and your sister jamn’ cracked me up – what a hoot! That must be the guitar hero or whatever, right? Jeez, I just looked at it again and noticed the lady on the other sofa is singing – you on the drums, you all had it going on – LOL. I think you should post a video of that Kim! Ha! Anway, the pictures are great too to the sports car. Love the vid of you racing toward the city (sears tower), it looked cool and will be nice for people to see if they’ve never been to the city before. I wonder if anyone looks at a picture of themselves and likes it? I know how you’re feeling on that one but it’s probably way more common for women (especially) than ya think! Take care Kim! Thanks for sharing more of your b-day with us πŸ™‚

  2. Nilsa says:

My fiance totally would’ve been one of those people drooling and giving you the thumbs-up. He’s a sucker for fancy cars.

  3. Kyra says:

I’m sorry… but I really need to be uncomfortable in that car.

About the pictures… I’m in hardly any pictures of my family. One – because I’m usually the photographer, and two – because I feel the same way. But I’m missing out on the ability to look back at a happy memory, rather than a jean size. Be careful how you view those pictures and remember what they were really about.

You’re BEAUTIFUL, and you need to see that. Everyone else already does!

  4. Lisa says:

Sounds like a blast! And with Rock Band and cake to top it off, too! Woohoo!!!

  5. diane says:

    What a wonderful birthday!! πŸ™‚
I look at pictures of myself and think they look nothing like what I see in the mirror. So, phooey on them. I think cameras lie!

  6. Courtney Ilax says:

Kim Love the Pic of us :). I want you to know that is one of the only pictures I have of me prego this time around. I had a great day with you and stevens family.

  7. Megan says:

I had so much fun with you and Steven and your family! I really had a great time hanging out with you, and I’m looking forward to spending some more time with you sometime soon – you guys should come to KC for a weekend. Maybe you and Steven can meet my crazy family!

PS – Don’t worry, you and your sister are no worse than me and my older brother when we get together. πŸ˜‰

  8. sizzle says:

Sad to say it but I probably would not have noticed the car. I am so oblivious when it comes to that kind of stuff. But it sounds like a GREAT TIME and I am so glad for you.

About the weight issue- just keep taking care of you, the internal stuff will shift. You’ve lost 20lbs and that is no small feat!

  9. kilax says:

JQ14 – Oh, don’t encourage me to post a video of me jamming on the drums! I might actually do it! I have no shame sometimes… and, I sometimes do like my photos. Just not lately. πŸ™

Nilsa – Maybe someone will give you the Chicago Exotic Car Tour for a wedding gift as well!

Kyra – What do you mean about being uncomfortable in the car? You don’t think you would like it? πŸ˜‰ Thanks for your kind words. I normally love to jump into photos, I just hate seeing them afterwards. That is kind of weird…

Lisa – I know! I wish every weekend was like that one!

diane – That is true. Do cameras add on 10 lbs like video cameras do? πŸ˜‰

Courtney Ilax – You don’t have anymore photos of you pregnant? Why not?!

Megan – I would love to come to KC and hang out with you and Andrew! I will have to try to plan something with Steven! If you are that close with your older brother, it must be hard that he lives all the way in TX.

sizzle – Not everyone is into cars like that – no biggie! πŸ™‚ And I should just be proud of the 20 lbs…. why can’t I be? It just that I can remember being smaller than this. Duh Kim, it’s not going to happen over night!

  10. *lynne* says:

I’m not into cars, but can appreciate the enthusiasm of an enthusiast πŸ™‚ Glad you had a good time !! πŸ™‚

I’m totally with ya on the weight thingy – but like Ms Sizz says, I think it’s more important that you be positive about it, be good to yourself, don’t judge yourself by external expectations (and challenge your internal expectations!)… and most of all, don’t allow yourself to be all guiltified. I’m slowly working on getting healthy – I remember about 10 years ago self-discipline was no problem,,, but now,,, well, I’ll take that ice cream, and tortilla chips, but I’m complementing them with home-cooked meals, a variety of salads, and fruits. Things’ll take care of themselves… (they better!! waaaaahhh! I have 40lbs to lose, myself…)

  11. DeAnne says:

it sounds like a great weekend, especially the silly. we all need someone in our lives that makes us laugh uncontrollably!

  12. martymankins says:

My daughter brings out the silly in me. And so does my wife’s granddaughter. But I can get pretty stupid and silly and try to find the most outrageous (but nice) thing to say to get her to laugh.

That car is amazing. Would love to test drive something like that. Congrats, Steven.

I had to finally ditch a couple pairs of jeans this year since my January 2008 goal of getting in shape never happened. I still plan to make it a September 2008 goal (complete with weekly blog post updates) and hoping that I will be keeping the jeans I have now past Christmas.

  13. SJ says:

I’m not a Lamborghini fan (too squared-off for my taste), but I’m glad you had fun!

Kim, you are not seeing yourself realistically. Something else is affecting the way you view yourself. In these photos, you look beautiful and healthy, not at all blob-like. I don’t even think you look overweight at all. Honestly! I think you are looking through depression’s eyes.

And I totally agree with what Kyra said.

  14. None of you look very excited while playing.

It should score you on how much you jump around and stuff…

  15. Sadie says:

Wow. That car is beautiful! I definitly would have been one of the people with the camera phone pointed right at you… πŸ™‚

  16. Stephanie says:

Happy Birthday! I’m glad to hear you had so much fun!

  17. Beth says:

That car is frickin’ awesome – what a cool thing to do!

Girl, you are a bombshell, and you’ll get where you want to be. You have so much motivation and drive, it will be sooner that later that you are loving your pictures!

  18. Catherine says:

Wow, I totally adore that smokin’ hot car! Zooom. I have some car porn from the Gumball Run 2008 stop here in L.A. that I’ll be posting to my Flickr soon.

  19. marissa says:

That is seriously awesome!!!! I love those photos you posted.

Oh I totally have a few people in my life who bring out the silly. I love being around them. I have a freind who does it and, amazingly, my boyfriend does too. It’s fun!

  20. Kevin says:

Great photos! Happy belated birthday! I’m jealous of the car, but I’m still waiting on my skydiving trip with you…

  21. Courtney Ilax says:

Hey! Guess what. I am typing yout his message from inside our new bedroom at our new house πŸ˜‰ . How exciting. Can’t wait for you two to come and see the house. Lov ya

  22. Christina says:

My older sister brings out the donk in me.

I wish I would hurry up and graduate too. School is annoying.

  23. kilax says:

*lynne* – It’s hard to be positive when I know I have so far to do – but I am sure you understand! It’s important to focus on feeling good and the small, but important progress I (we!) have made.

DeAnne – I agree! Maybe we need more than one person like that!

martymankins – I can’t wait to read your fitness updates! That is kind of what’s been occupying my time lately – I’ve been exercising instead of writing here and reading…

SJ – They are a bit squared off. I am more attracted to curvy cars. And THANK YOU for your kind comments. Maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on myself πŸ™‚

Gary LaPointe – I was concentrating! Ha ha. I do jump around when I play the guitar though!

Sadie – I would have been too – I do it a lot in Chicago when I see nice cars πŸ˜‰

    Stephanie – Thanks!

Beth – Thanks for your encouragement! I hope it will be sooner too!

Catherine – What is the Gumball Run? Why does that sound familiar?!?

marissa – We need the silly! It’s hard to be serious 100% of the time!

Kevin – Thanks for the birthday wishes! I think you and Beth should just go for the dive! You’ll be hooked!

Courtney Ilax – I can’t wait to see your place! Mom’s been telling me all about it. Love you!

Christina – Nobody brings out the donk in me like you. (That should be written on Valentine’s!)

  24. Catherine says:

Because it sounds like Cannonball Run. I think what it amounts to is a touring car show. Here are the pics (they are kinda crappy since my access was not too good :P).

  25. martymankins says:

Wow.. that is awesome, Kim. Way to go!

And yeah, I figure forcing myself to post something once a week will be motivation enough to make it a regular park of my life again. Plus I need to take advantage of the Bally’s membership I’ve had since April 2007 (and gone maybe 40-50 times since)

  26. jeanny says:

That’s an awesome way to celebrate your birthday. I love the cake…looks yummy πŸ™‚
    Great day Kim!

  27. kilax says:

Catherine – Are you kidding me? Those shots are awesome! I love your closeup of the Ferrari horse emblem… and of course, the Ferrari engine…

martymankins – I think a weekly check-in is a good idea! Or even just forcing yourself to write about it once a week, like “I finally ran for 20 minutes” or “I’m not sore anymore” blah blah blah. I worry people will think it is too boring if I do it, but here I am suggesting it to you, and I know I would read it… so why wouldn’t people read it here?! πŸ˜€

jeanny – I think it will probably be my best bday ever! I could go for some more cake though!

  28. martymankins says:

See, that’s what I’m talking about. If you updated your progress here, I know there would a ton of people reading it. I mean, look at the over 20 comments you have from people on this one post. And I think if you covered your progress in a fun way, people wouldn’t find it boring at all.

One reason people blog is to tell others what’s going on in their life and how much of that compares to their own lives. It’s sort of a “I inspire you and you inspire me” logic.

  29. kilax says:

martymankins – I am going to try to think of some creative way to post about my progress!
