A reason NOT to skip the post-race awards ceremony

By , November 5, 2008 5:37 am

A bad runner’s habit of mine is skipping the post-race awards ceremony. I’ve only stayed once – the time my mom, sister and aunt came to watch us. And I am not sure what made us stay then.

As soon as I finished running this past Sunday, I was ready to go home. I felt really sick. And I didn’t think my time was that good. And I was a bit disappointed in myself. Just a bit.

I searched the internet tonight to find Steven’s score for him… and found out that I placed first in my age bracket (AND that 16 seconds got added on to my score?!?!). First out of two people, but first nonetheless.

Guess I should have stuck around to hear my name called for once.

I need to make more of an effort to stick around just to cheer others on, and participate in the running community. It’s time to be less selfish about running… I do it for my health, but it’s not just about me when I am at a race!

Dammit. I feel stupid.

That’s awesome! Congratulations! I have only gotten close to the top once, when I came in 4th by 4 seconds. There were medals or something and I was pissed that I missed it by such a small amount! Especially since I was running with a friend and we were talking and not really going as fast as we could have.

I tend not to stay either, which is a habit I should get out of. No matter who wins, it’s nice to recognize them and cheer them on.

  2. that’s awesome for you that you came in 1st in your agre bracket!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!! i understand, i would have a hard time staying too… don’t feel stupid and don’t beat yourself up over it!!! maybe next time you can make an effort to stay (unless you’re feeling bad- then i vote to head to the house!)
    =^..^=

Next time! But I’m sure you’re not the only one who often doesn’t hang around after, so try not to feel bad.

  4. Congratulations! Yea, stick around – it’s not everyday you get to hear your named called out over a loud speaker! But you can’t really blame yourself for not sticking around when you felt sick. The last thing I would want to do is clap and cheer when my tummy is in knots.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are learning and that is a good thing. Congrats on your win. Why on earth did they add time to your score?

tori – Thanks you ๐Ÿ™‚ You should be proud of the fact that you were able to run and talk during a race! I never can!

CourtneyInControl – Thanks! I am going to make myself stay next time. Even if I kind of don’t feel like it ๐Ÿ˜‰

SJ – True. We weren’t alone in the shuttle bus back to parking! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Gina (Mannyed) – Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚ I wonder if I would have felt better sticking around and walking a bit rather than getting into the car and sitting. Either way. I am going to start staying for the awards.

    Alice – Thank you!

teeni – I am not sure why they added time! It said 27:04 on their clock and mine when I finished. I wonder if they add the time it takes for them to grab your number? Hmmm.

That’s awesome. For as much running in races that you do, sticking around to see how you did would be something cool to do. First in your age bracket is great.

martymankins – Thank you! I am definitely going to start sticking around! I am just going to stay away from the snack table!
