Another Sunday lost

<image: Mommy, are we going to paint again today?>

Unfortunately, yes.

<image: Can I help?>

Unfortunately, no.

I am really embarrassed that I am bad at painting. And that I hate it so much. I mean, I am an architecture major. Shouldn’t I be good at these “home improvement” sort of things?

I just like to think this means I am better at telling people where and how to paint, than actually doing it myself. Ha!

Okay, I’m not really good at that either. I am not an Interior Designer, after all.

I really love the way the paint is turning out. We painted our bedroom a dark greenish/brownish/gray – Valspar’s Seine. We have an accent wall behind the bed that is even darker – Valspar’s Italian Leather. That is the color we painted the bathroom today – the Italian Leather. I LOVE dark rooms, so I am super excited about this.

Seine and Italian Leather. They look nothing like this in real life.

But why no photos? Because the bathroom isn’t finished, and because we have no bed (just mattress and frame) and the ugliest bedroom furniture you have ever seen. So I estimate you’ll see a photo of the bedroom in about… 6 months, and a photo of the bathroom… maybe later this week.

On Friday we hung out and spent the night with my friend Alejandra and her husband Sony in Des Moines. She is the other bridesmaid of mine that I have not seen in over a year! AHH!

Anyway, we obviously had a great time and I really, really wish we could see them more. We both do. They are a unique couple – she’s from Puerto Rico, and he is Chinese, but from Venezuela… they are fun to be around. We have a lot in common, but they have a different perspective on some things.

Yes, this has a point. They moved into a new-to-them townhome in July and I could tell they put a lot of thought and hard work into decorating it and making it homey. They were talking about the last time they saw our place and that we didn’t even have a dining room table. Ha! Steven and I have done so much work together on our home since the wedding, it really feels homey, like it is “ours” now (instead of just his). It was fun to talk about all the work we have done with them because they could relate and… I could tell they were actually listening (another reason I like them!).

It’s amazing to see your home come together. Because, unless you are rich… you can’t really afford to get everything/do everything you want all at once. But maybe I wouldn’t even prefer it that way. I like that we have made it what it is. Even if I haven’t loved every minute of it!

I love your attitude about making the place yours even if it takes time to get it that way. I guess you will have to have those friends over sometime soon so they can see all the progress you have made. I am sure they will be impressed. I love those shows where they show the before and afters of the houses they fix up. Heehee – is that Data in the pics? So cute. They always want to get involved in the home improvement projects!

  2. kaylee says:

    you cant paint?

  3. tori says:

I wish I had known you were painting! I actually love to paint! I have painted every room in our house, even the 2 story family room/front hallway. I would never do THAT again because I am somewhat terrified of heights, but I love to paint regular one story rooms!

  4. martymankins says:

Data helps out more often than our 3 older beasts do, unless you count walking through paint and then laying on the front room floor “help”

Those colors go well together. We are continuing our kitchen remodel with painting here soon. The counter top in in, the window is getting replaced this week and our cabinets doors are getting refaced soon. Painting is something I’ve admitted that I’m not that good at. So we are having someone come in and do it all for us.

  5. Data is such a cute kitteh!!! (and helpful it seems!!) every time i see pics of him i just want to give him scritches!!! too bad i don’t live a bit closer, i love to paint!! dc and i were talking about that this weekend… i wish i had a place i could paint!!! the colors you picked out look awesome, i can’t wait to see pics!!! it is fun to make your house your own, even though it does take time. i think that’s why i keep getting “the bug” to buy… not a good bug to have but i’ve got it… i’m glad that you had a good time visiting friends you don’t get to see that often, that makes it more special!!!
    =^..^=

teeni – Data LOVED hanging out while we were painting! Of course, he could not be IN the room, and he felt left out πŸ™ I hope our friends can come over soon. I mean, no dining room table, even? LAME!

    kaylee – Not well!

tori – NOW you tell me! Well, we still need to do the guest bathroom and bedroom!

martymankins – A kitchen remodel sounds like so much fun! I bet a few simple changes can really update the look of the whole place. I hope we get to see photos? You were smart to hire someone to paint there. Especially with all that cabinetry!

CourtneyInControl – Data only appears helpful. Ha ha! I think we have that bug too. But with it being Christmas… we can only spend so much. There are so many things we talk and talk and talk about doing… but never do πŸ˜›

  7. martymankins says:

kim – you will see pics. When it’s all done, it’s going to be blogged… in al of it’s before during and after glory.

  8. Denise says:

I love the pics of Data! The expression on his face in each one looks like he’s talking.
I love the paint colors you’ve chosen. Should look great!

We repainted, recarpeted, retiled and redecorated last year about this time. Larry did all of the painting. I’m actually not allowed to paint. (sigh) We painted 2 walls in the livingroom one color(terracotta) and 2 walls another(rusty/sand) color. Menards colors, whose names escape me at the moment. But, you get the general idea. Kitchen, diningroom a form of olive green, entry and stairway are called Gold Dust. And the bathroom is called Arctic(silvery/gray). I love the new colors, we needed an update after 15 yrs. of mostly stark white walls. The livingroom especially seems so warm and cosy now.

You’re right making a home “your own” is an ongoing project. Good Luck with yours!!

  9. diane says:

I wish my kitties were so eager to help. Yesterday afternoon I announced that it was time to start cleaning, and they both bolted. No joke!

  10. marissa says:

I love Data! So cute!! Even if the process of painting is a pain, like you said, the end result will be wonderful because it will be homey, warm and all yours!

  11. Alice says:

man, my house needs a paint job something AWFUL. my parents keep suggesting that they can come down ANY TIME and help me paint it, no seriously, ANY TIME! just say when! they’ll come down and paint it for the love of god… πŸ™‚

  12. Cheryl says:

For me, it isn’t about whether or not I can paint, but that I don’t like to.

  13. Jess says:

I am dying to buy a home just so we can make it homey. Even though I really suck at nesting. I suppose we’ll see once I have a house to decorate. I’ve never even painted a wall before.

  14. kilax says:

martymankins – Cool! Can’t wait to see them!

Denise – Ha! The bad painting genes must run in the family then? πŸ˜› The colors you chose sound like ones we would chose! Everything is very “earthy” in our home πŸ™‚

diane – Ha ha ha! They know what’s going on! πŸ˜›

marissa – Thanks! It is all worth it in the end. It’s been like this with other projects. I am somewhat… resistant, but love the end product!

    Alice – Ha! They’re so nice… right? πŸ˜›

Cheryl – You’re one step ahead of me then! Because I can’t do it and I don’t like it! πŸ˜‰

Jess – Let me know when you get started and I will give you all of my tips. I am good at taping!

  15. javaqueen says:

Ohhhhh, I lurve lurve lurve to paint! It’s my favorite! I grab a few kick ass CD’s and sing away and the whole process is therapeutic. Plus, when you’re done, it’s PERFECTION – I love the smell when it’s done, it’s all clean….. my niece just bought a house and I volunteered to help paint. Sorry ya didn’t like it, but at least you got the end result, which is always nice! Experimenting with paint colors is fun too πŸ˜‰

  16. Emma says:

Ummm, I’m totally obsessed with your kitty! And I love your can-do attitude- such an inspiration!

  17. joanharvest says:

Ha! I finally was able to leave a comment here. I have tried several times but there are a few blogs that say my e-mail address is not valid. I have tried both addresses and neither work which is crazy because they did before. I tried my daughter’s on Teeni’s blog and it worked so I am assuming it will work here too.

I’ve lived in my home for 35 years so I have forgotten what it is like to move into a new place. I wouldn’t mind doing that sometime. It would be fun to decorate. I left a long response to your last post and I lost it when my e-mail kept coming up invalid.

Basically it was about depression and anxiety which I am an expert (well, maybe not an expert) at. I got my first anxiety attack 47 years ago but have long since learned to deal with them. I do have to take an anti depressant and I do see a therapist but I have made great changes in my life recently for the better and there are more changes to come.

I can’t remember what else I wrote. i guess I’m not getting my memory back anytime soon.

  18. joanharvest says:

It worked!! I am adding more then. We are both meant to be healthy. I am so happy that you have lost all that weight. It’s taken me 1 year and 10 months to lose 90 pounds and I have 90 more to go. And yes, I have screwed up many times and eaten for comfort but I won’t give up. I am so tired of being so fat. I started out at 344 pounds. I am now 254 pounds. I know haw hard it is but I know it will be woth it so I can play with my grandchild when it is born.

  19. Christina says:

Hahaha I love your new picture at the top of the page!! Update your blog and tell me all about it! πŸ™‚

  20. kilax says:

javaqueen – Maybe I will grow to like it as much as you? I sure hope so, because even reading your description, I am getting excited about it again! What is THAT about?

Emma – Ha ha, thanks. He’s been a brat lately, if you are looking for a companion…

joanharvest – I am sorry you are having comment issues. I don’t know what to do. People have told me that is happening and I have tried to fix it but I can’t figure it out πŸ™ Thanks for trying over and over and over! I really think your weight loss journey is an inspiration! Especially when you write about messing up and getting back at it… it’s a journey, and it’s not always easy! Thanks for sharing that with me πŸ™‚

Christina – I was unsure if you were talking about the cookie dough photo or the race photo until I looked at the time! I updated with a post πŸ™‚
