Friday Question #77

image:Memory foam pillowWhat kind of pillow do you like to use? How often do you get a new pillow? Do you bring a pillow when you travel?

Another strange question, right? Well, this came to mind because I have two people in my family who are very peculiar about pillows (hello Mom and Steven), but I will let them tell their own story.

I like soft pillows, but not so soft that your head sinks right through them to the mattress. I have been using this cheap-o memory foam contour pillow from Target for about four years now. I like to put a flat pillow underneath it, then let the front of the contour pillow slide off a little bit. The only time I’ve replaced it is when I came back from Rome, because it got stinky.

Data really likes this pillow too. If I leave him alone in the bedroom, I will come back to find lots of tiny teeth marks in it, and in my pillowcase. Thanks Data!

I always bring a pillow with me when I travel, unless I am going on an airplane (too inconvenient) or to my Aunt Sue’s house (because I really like her pillows).

I sleep with 3 pillows – two for my head, one medium firmness and the other a super, super soft feather pillow that, when laid on, is practically nothing but on top of the other pillow is perfect. The third pillow goes between me and Katie, if necessary, when it’s too hot for her to lay against me but she won’t move away.

Memory foam from Costco. If I can’t take a pillow with me when I travel, I buy one once I reach my destination and just leave it behind. There’s no way I’m going to rest my head on he same pillow that hundreds of strangers have used to prop up (God only knows what) body part while doing God only knows what. I suspect if these hotel room pillows were subjected to the “black light test” that most of us would just puke. OK, graphic enough so I’ll say no more (but you asked!).

As a kid a always used feather pillows, but as an adult (with neck problems) I use those squishy synthetic ones. Not the memory foam ones, I find those to be too hard, but the stuffed ones. One pillow for my head, one or two to hold because I also have shoulder problems. Holding a pillow while I sleep is a MUST.

I try to take my pillows with me when I travel, but it’s my most often forgotten item, so I’ve learned to tough it out.

Hmm, I’m not very particular about my pillows. I have one that is memory foam on one side and regular padding/stuffing on the other side, and I’m pretty content with that. That said, when I go to hotels, I always like the big fluffy pillows.

  5. my favorite pillow is the one shared with Manny. : ) He loves to sit on top of my pillow while I’m using it. He doesn’t care.

I leave my pillows at home when I travel.

  6. LiLu says:

We have approximately 14 pillows of different shapes, qualities, and old-ness on our bed.

    I should work on that.

  7. Ren says:

The pillow in the picture looks exactly like the pillow I use. I’m not sure how long I’ve been using it, but quite possibly for as long as you have. Lately, I’ve found that I turn the pillow sideways and lay on my stomach to fall asleep. I can’t really describe it.

I’m not very picky about pillows. I got this one back before I figured out the link between my headaches and caffeine, but I still use it and prefer it.

I have an ergonomic pillow from Ikea which was pretty cool at first, but really does me no good since I sleep on my side. It’s designed more for someone who sleeps on their back, which I never do. I just use regular squishy pillows.
I always have 2 pillows–sometimes I will fold a squishy pillow in half and stack it on top of another pillow. I suppose one firm pillow would do the job of two squishy ones but…eh, whaddya gonna do. I like the squishy. I got allergin-resistant pillows when I met E. so…probably about 2 years ago.

  9. Julia says:

I just can’t use pillows that are super poofy, I like mine to be a little flatter.
I should probably invest in some good ones, maybe when Tyler and I do our wedding registry.

  10. tori says:

I rarely use my pillow. My husband makes fun of me because I usually scoot it up towards the top of the bed and then sleep under it. Well, not under the pillow, but below where the pillow is on the bed. Normally I wake up to find my husband (who likes about 50 pillows) using mine since I wasn’t.

  11. sizzle says:

I like a squishy pillow but nothing with feathers/down. I hate how they poke out and stick me!

  12. Sophia says:

Right now I use my mom’s pillow which I stole from her. It’s one of those rather pricey ones that adjust to the weight of your head or something. No matter. It’s TOO comfy I can’t wake up!! :-/

  13. Erin says:

Hmmm, I just buy whatever at Bed Bath and Beyond. Jason has a huge heavy head and he crushes the life out of pillows so we go through them pretty fast. I like mine to be slightly firm and not too poofy. Since I’m a stomach sleeper, I like something that doesn’t make my head too much higher than my body.

  14. Denise says:

Down alternative pillows from Kmart. They are supportive without being too hard or poofy.

  15. martymankins says:

Once a year. Sometimes longer, depending on if I make any of the pillow sales that Macy’s has.

And I like to buy a quality pillow. Not something that’s 2 for $10. A good $30 or $40 pillow does make a difference in how comfortable I can be at night.

A small investment considering it helps me get a regular good night’s sleep.
