Signs of spring

By , March 10, 2010 7:18 am

I’m so happy it was rain, not snow, pelting me in the face as I walked to work this morning.

I just wish I would have remembered my umbrella!

What signs of spring are you noticing where you live?

I feel like the longer days have snuck up on me. It is light when I walk to work in the morning now (even at 6:30 am) and sometimes light on the train ride home. I guess that means it is time to start breaking out of the habit of immediately getting into sloth-mode when I come home. Darn!

  1. Yep– it used to be totally dark when I’d leave my last class at 6:30, and it’s slowly getting lighter and lighter πŸ™‚

  2. When I walk outside first thing in the morning, before the sun comes up, I smell spring. I smell the dampness in the air. I smell that earthiness that creeps out of the ground as it begins to thaw. I smell spring.

  3. The semi milder temps we are having plus all the rain that is on it’s way are the signs of spring I’m noticing.

  4. How funny — I was just thinking that it’s supposed to rain tomorrow, and in the moment I prefer snow to rain! πŸ˜‰ Though I always carry a mini umbrella with me.

I love that I don’t leave my house in pitch blackness in the mornings; but I will be next week, once we change the clock!

  5. I am really loving and welcoming Spring… I love the smell in the air.. sort of wet/new here I come smell lol. Here though the Temps went from mid 40’s to mid 70’s… it is humid here again.. my hair is out of control… lol

I like longer days cause we get to take Sadie out for a walk in the evening πŸ™‚

Signs of Spring: The snow is melting and the water is flooding the roads. Bummer. On a more positive note, it’s light out in the morning when I’m done exercising. Wish we didn’t have to adjust the clocks on Saturday.
True happy signs…when I see the daffodils popping up. Then I can smile!

  7. I can’t wait for spring πŸ˜€ Ever since I was young, I’ve been telling my parents I’m moving to California because I can’t stand the snow. (I’m still holding true to that).

I also like having longer days!

  8. Nicci says:

I’m so not ready for Daylight Savings and losing an hour, but I’m loving this warm weather. The days keep getting nicer.

  9. Dave2 says:

I stopped wearing a winter jacket outdoors!

  10. Hilly says:

The cherry blossoms! Oh man, they are everywhere and it smells so amazing between that and the lilacs! God, how I missed this state. πŸ™‚

  11. Just Audrey says:

It’s been sunny and gotten brighter earlier and darker later.

  12. Christina says:

The air is so different now. Plus there are more and more birds singing! Love it!

  13. Libby says:

Haha…I was just talking about this with the pest control guy. I live in FL and yesterday and today were gorgeous out-finally in the 70s (instead of 40s-50s). He said spring was finally here, but to me it feels like summer. I told him that my mom said it was going to be in the 40s in WI and he was totally shocked. Enjoy the spring and I hope it doesn’t get cold again there!

    • kilax says:

Oh gosh. The highlight of my week was my 45 degree short-sleeved run yesterday! I am going to be so pscyhed when we hit 70 in IL!

  14. Linzi says:

I can run after work and it’s still light out! That makes all the difference in the world to me. And it just keeps getting warmer! Upper 40’s wooo hooo!! πŸ™‚

  15. Stef says:

fornicating rabbits! just kidding, haven’t noticed that, but when i went to UC irvine i swear to god there were rabbits EVERYWHERE. cute tho! it’s definitely lighter longer, when i get out of my afternoon class i can tell the sun is higher!

    • kilax says:

Ha ha. It was like that at my college too. Thanks for reminding me. Steven and I used to always make jokes about it.

  16. David says:

Here in Wisconsin, the snow is finally melting and revealing the damage that those darn little ground rodents did to my yard! Seems like an annual rite of passage.

    • kilax says:

Ugh. I know what you mean! I want the snow to go away, but you’re not always sure what you will find!

  17. Adam says:

Thanks for stopping by my blog!!

So, living in phoenix now and you’re totally not going to want to hear this, but my sign of spring is that all of the trees are starting to throw out leaves / flowers / etc.

Don’t worry though, I’ll be complaining about 115 degree weather soon enough.

  18. Susan says:

The only snow piles that are left are from the GIANT ones that were from clearing parking spots and such…I can see grass again!!

  19. Erin says:

I got to wear my bright pink trench coat today! That’s my favorite sign of spring.

Other than that, spring = muddy kitchen floors at our house due to 8 not-so-little dog paws. I love spring but hate how wet it is all the time.

    • kilax says:

I am exactly the same way. The mud drives me insane! And I get all excited about the snow being off the paths in the parks… just to find mud. (Oh well, I will probably run in it tomorrow anyway!)

  20. Kim says:

I live in California, where there are no seasons. The only way I know it’s Spring is because it’s brighter in the morning, which reminds me it’s time to set the clocks forward πŸ˜‰

  21. ShutupandRun says:

For me it’s the birds! I am finally hearing the birds again. Sweet bird chirps = hope for warmer days.

  22. Etta says:

Walking to my car this morning, I glanced at my flower bed. Beside the decaying leaves that I need to clean out, there was clover growing. GREEN!!!

  23. J says:

Well the snow has melted. I just cant wait for the tulips to start popping up!

  24. Holly says:

I have such spring fever! I LOVE that it’s light outside when I leave the gym in the morning (7 a.m.) and still light out at 7:00 p.m. The extra daylight just helps me SO much!

  25. Mica says:

Yay, spring! It is FINALLY above freezing. Today, it is even sunny and in the mid-60’s. It’s amazing how much my mood is improving with the sunshine and warmer temperatures. That Midwestern winter is BRUTAL, I say!

  26. Sammi says:

It was still light out last time I drove to my evening accounting class! πŸ™‚ Also, the temperature on my runs has changed what I need to wear! I really do like winter a lot more than summer though, so I’m not exactly happy about it πŸ™ lol. Running in the heat is not my favorite thing in the world!

  27. Vicki says:

Hmmm…signs of spring? It snowed on me during my run yesterday…in Las Vegas…in March.

Luckily next week is supposed to be in the seventies. πŸ™‚

  28. Ren says:

The signs of spring here are the 70 degree afternoons and all of the trees blooming, along with some flowers.

I am not, however, looking forward to the time change this weekend as it makes it that much longer before I really feel like morning runs.

  29. BostonRunner says:

Sun! Everyone is starting to wear nice clothes instead of bundling up!

  30. Leah says:

The other day I was walking the dog and could smell flowers in the air. The trees are all starting to bloom. Thats totally my favorite part of spring.

Ive noticed the longer days too. I can run with my ipod now because its not dark out!!

  31. Karla says:

Yep! It’s light when I wake up now! And I don’t have to wear my HUGE coat or snow boots! The past two days I’ve worn flats without socks!!

  32. Damn, I’m not ready to give up sloth mode. OR wear tank tops for that matter.

  33. jillian says:

I see flowers!!!!!! And even though it is ever so little, the days are longer!

  34. Jon says:

Last night, my wife keeps mentioning the “spring peepers” are out. Apparently, “spring peepers” is rural-code for frogs. I told her I didn’t think that was a real thing. I told her it was probably just something her mom said. I’ll have to google it. πŸ™‚

    • kilax says:

Ha. I immediately thought “peeping toms.” πŸ˜‰

Sometimes, when it rains we will get tons of frogs out. Usually that is more towards the summer though. Strange!

      • Jon says:

I changed that first sentence three times and apparently didn’t really read it at all. Glad it made enough sense to garner a response.

Gotta love it when an editor makes an editing mistake. [roll eyes] πŸ™‚

  35. Anne says:

Beautiful sunshine, longer days and the smell of spring in the air πŸ™‚

  36. Paula says:

It’s definitely lighter in the morning and the cherry blossom trees are blooming πŸ™‚ Data in the tub-LOL! When one of my cats is hiding and I can’t find them, I say they are in “catspace.”

  37. Amy says:

It’s lighter in the morning when we go to school and stays light longer in the evening…and the crocuses are out!

  38. Shannon says:

I love the longer days! We also had a wonderful string of warm days here which is great, but also a tease because we know it won’t last.

  39. Bethany says:

Thank goodness for spring’s arrival (so it seems, anyway!) We’ve seen a LOT of sunshine, weather in the 50s, the snow melting and even a few flowers popping up!!!!

  40. martymankins says:

For me, it’s the complete lack of snow (although it did snow yesterday – Sat. March 13th). We went a month without snow. The grass is starting to turn and stay green is some spots. And some of the birds have decided it’s safe to stay, even if we get a spring snow storm or two before the official start to spring.

    • kilax says:

I can’t believe you went a whole month without snow! It really put a damper on snowy sunday, didn’t it?!
