How much do YOU sweat?

By , August 12, 2010 6:40 am

Well, let me tell you – if you don’t sweat enough you might never get to see the design on this workout tank:

You can ‘t see it very well (click to see larger) – but in the picture on the right, the words “the competition” have appeared on the woman’s shirt becuase she sweat enough.

I was reading this WSJ article about new clothing design technologies, and I had to laugh when I got to the part about ViewSport athletic wear (they make clothes for men and women). They advertise that “when you workout, the ViewSPORT sweat activated technology reveals a design which is only apparent when your sweat comes in contact with the fabric.”

And a quote from Ben Wood, the Chief Executive:

The whole point is to demonstrate how hard you are working out.

Does more sweat = working out harder?

Some people don’t sweat that much. I know in the winter I am covered in sweat and Steven is still dry, even if we ran the same amount. Of course, it’s completely different in the summer – everyone is covered in sweat, right? Right?!

Either way, it’s an interesting concept. I can see how it would be fun. They mentioned one user’s experience:

Laura Klein, of Pittsford, N.Y., wears a shirt and tank top from ViewSPORT to her spinning classes. “It keeps you motivated,” she says. “You want to see the design.” Other gym members have asked her where she got the shirt, she says. In one Pilates class, “they made me kind of stand and model the shirt,” she says.

Ha ha.

I would definitely be one of those people who had the design show up right away. I am a sweaty girl (when working out… and sometimes when not working out). Good thing I love to sweat!*

How much do you sweat? Would you wear these shirts?

*Too bad I cannot figure out how to make my workout clothes NOT smell like A$$. Any tips?!?!

Oh man, I sweat so much! I think it could be 20 degrees outside and I’d go out for a run and sweat. I’m with ya. I’m still working on the clothes thing but I do use sport detergent and it mostly works. My favorite is Pro Wash that I found at Walmart (in a pouch) but they haven’t carried it at my store in a while (and I avoid Walmart like the plague so I don’t go too often).

  2. I sweat a lot! Especially in the assular region—yuck.

  3. Megan says:

I am a sweaty beast! I love breaking a sweat though, because it does tell me I’m doing something good for my body. I would SO wear one of these shirts ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. BostonRunner says:

haha that shirt is SO COOL. I mean, it’s kind of weird.. but interesting : )
I sweat a good amount, but you’re right it definitely depends on temperature not necessarily how hard I’m working.

  5. I sweat like a disgusting pig. Like a man pig. No joke.

  6. I think these shirts are pretty cool, especially since I sweat A LOT! When I used to go to the gym I was always the sweatiest girl there. I kind of like it though since it tells me I’m working hard! It’s difficult to get the smell out of sweaty clothes, but what I think it helps to never let them sit in a wet pile. I always hang them to dry before putting them in the laundry basket, which makes a big difference.

    • Erin says:

Good point about hanging them to dry out first. I’ve also read that putting some plain vinegar in the washing machine when you add the detergent can help kill odors. I’ve tried it on musty towels before and it really did help.

      • kilax says:

I’ve been putting vinegar in with all of my clothes and it does help! We are out right now… maybe that is why the stench is so bad? ๐Ÿ˜›

  7. dad says:

Maybe it should say STAY BACK at that point?

  8. Erin says:

I’d wear one of those tops. I like tangible results for all my hard work ๐Ÿ™‚

I sweat like crazy, too. I had sweat running between my boobs just walking to the train this morning. Last night at track I ran in just shorts and the skimpiest sports bra I own. I put a t-shirt on when I was done and the shirt was soaked through in minutes.

  9. Ewa says:

Thought I would stop for a visit.
I sweat tons so event after a lazy workout I can pretend I worked my butt off. ๐Ÿ™‚ Now that is maybe OK in a gym but when I am running or hiking it means I have to carry a lot of water with me.

    • kilax says:

Thanks for commenting! I have to make sure to drink a lot of water too. I accidentally didn’t drink enough before my last 10 miler. Oops!

  10. Melissa says:

I sweat like a mad woman when I’m working out (and like you said, sometimes when I’m not too which is ick but oh well). I bought some new workout tops and wore one last night for 3.5 mile run (inside on the treadmill) and it was almost completely soaked! (It was an underarmour tech tee) I actually commented to Matt…who gets soaked from a 3 mile run??

I would totally wear one of those t-shirts!

I use Tide with Febreeze (and have been for years at this point, way before they started advertising it) and it really does work! Sometimes when I’m running I will actually smell the Febreeze “scent pearls” (like the commercial says!) being activated! Tide is definitely kind of pricey but totally worth it not to have clothes that smell like ass ๐Ÿ™‚ I also hang most of my workout clothes (running shorts, tech tees, etc) to dry after I’ve washed them so I don’t know if this also helps? (Scents not being “dried into” the fibers)

  11. Lacey says:

i sweat a LOT. a lot a lot. always have. i can sweat through a shirt easily.

  12. I thought I would weight in from the “other side” here. I’m of Finnish decent, and I barely sweat *at all.* In fact, I have to bring a spray bottle in the summer if it’s really hot outside. I can get heat stroke in a matter of minutes if it is hot enough. My husband — on the other hand — is of Vietnamese decent. He sweats just *thinking* about working out! These shirts would do *nothing* for me! I recently did a session of Bikram (hot room) yoga. While everyone else was sweating within the first 5 minutes, I was *so excited* that I had to wipe my forehead and hands in the *last ten minutes* of class!

    • kilax says:

Thanks for your input! I am excited to hear that not everyone is as sweaty and disgusting as me. But geesh, even Bikram didn’t get you?! WOW!

  13. Oh my gosh I love it! I ADORE that tank top! In the summer I sweat a lot, but in the winter not at all really. Even at my martial arts classes, I don’t sweat. It takes A LOT for me to work up a hardcore sweat in the winter.

On occasion I’ll wear a t-shirt (normally I wear super light sleeve-less tops) for running just so I can see how much I sweat. I like that feeling of knowing I just gave my all and it shows. ๐Ÿ˜€

  14. Kim says:

Those shirts are so cool! Unfortunately, I am not a sweater. First of all, I don’t work out hard (I hate intense cardio) so that could be the reason. But, even when I was on track team in high school, I remember that I didn’t sweat. Not sure why.

  15. Leah says:

Sometimes I sweat and sometimes I dont – even if Im doing the same workout. Its weird. I would LOVE one of these shirts though. I love getting all sweaty, it makes me feel like a total rockstar!

  16. Sarah Who? says:

I work my butt off when I work out, but I don’t sweat–even when I run. The funny thing is that my body is a FURNACE. I get really hot at night, but even then, I don’t sweat. Those shirts are awesome, though; I would definitely wear one – if I sweat enough to show the fun!

  17. I sweat like it’s going out of style and may never get the chance to sweat again if I don’t just drench myself then…no idea why!

  18. cher says:

i can see how this would be motivating…but i’d die before i saw the extra writing. i hardly ever sweat at all! hmmm, now that i think about it…maybe i need one!

  19. Jen says:

I sweat like crazy too! But I have to disagree with some of the above comments. I’ve found that by NOT letting the stuff dry is better. I rinse it right away (if I can) and make sure it doesn’t dry with sweat on it. Then, I wash it and then I wash it again without soap. That seems to help…the second cycle with no soap. These high-tech clothes seem to hold the soap and that keeps the smell around longer.

    • kilax says:

Maybe I should try your technique. Because drying my clothes out is only helping a bit and I can tell it is holding the soap in… it smells so weird!

  20. By the time I get back from my run in the morning, I’m drenched. It looks like I fell in a swimming pool.

  21. kapgar says:

I sweat profusely when I work out. PRO. FUSE. LY.

We’ve taken to using moisture wicking shirts. I LOVE THEM.

  22. DeAnne says:

    enough?
I definitely do and if I didn’t I wouldn’t feel like I did justice to my trip to the gym. yes, I’d wear these shirts; however I change before I even leave the gym so not too many people would actually see it. I’m not a runner so my stuff stays indoors :\

  23. *lynne* says:

Sweat-activated tees? Reminds me of the heat-activated shirts that would change color with temperature changes: I came to the States when the craze had just died out (mid-’90), couldn’t find any for sale, I really wanted one of those!

And yes, I sweat A LOT (remember my clown face?). I don’t like the feel of ‘artificial’ material on my skin, so I’ve kept away from the moisture-wicking stuff, and stick to cotton or cotton-feeling blends.

To tackle the smell? Rinse clothes thoroughly with cold water as soon as you can to get the sweat off; air dry; then wash as per instructions on label. I tried the Tide Sport thingy but it seemed to just be a 50:50 mix of detergent and Febreze: all it did was try to overpower any existing smells! Overpower being a key word here :p I also use the “MAX” anti-perspirant, because, well, we sweat all over but the aroma that emerges from the pits is usually naaaaasty! :p

  24. I sweat TONS when I’m running.Whew! I love this technology! Some of my buddies sweat not-so-much… I just don’t get that! No matter the season, I’m a’drippin’! ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. Amy says:

I have the same problem with stinky workout clothes – I sweat a lot too – and the best way to avoid it that I have found is washing them right away after a workout. If for some reason I “forget” (ie am too lazy) and they end up drying and smell even worse, I put about 1/4 cup baking soda in with my laundry detergent and this seems to deodorize everything. I also think it helps not to use fabric softner on polyester workout clothes. I have never tried the vinegar, maybe I will if I run out of baking soda!

  26. Mica says:

I sweat a LOT, though fortunately, it doesn’t usually stink. (It just smells like sweat.)

I would probably wear this shirt, though no more than I would wear any other shirt. Since I seem to sweat any time I move (like, walking to the fridge to eat cake), it probably wouldn’t be that motivating.

  27. Sweat drips down my legs. It’s disgusting.

And my clothes smell worse than ass.

    *sigh*

  28. Adam says:

Ummm, didn’t you see my Bikram yoga post? Yes, I sweat ๐Ÿ™‚

Not sure I would wear that shirt though. I honestly don’t like to wear shirts a whole lot when I run (yeah, I”m one of “THOSE” guys)

  29. The Linz says:

I’m a total sweater! I am not quite sure how feel I about these shirts – I suppose it depended on what appeared after I sweated it up! But it reminds of those hypercolor shirts from when we were little! Maybe the trend is coming back!
