Clothes purge

By , January 8, 2011 5:37 am

I had four large rubber maid boxes full of clothes in my closet, so I decided to go through them yesterday, and get rid of the stuff that is the wrong size (too big OR small) or that I just don’t like anymore. I LOVE getting rid of things.

The aftermath:

I realize that is a lot of clothes. A lot of it is pants and tops that are way too big for me, and I was still holding on to for some reason.

I got down to two rubber maid boxes – one for seasonal/miscellaneous stuff (tank tops, skirts, dress suits, sweaters) and one for sentimental stuff that I can’t seem to get rid of. Stuff like sports shirts,

vegetarian themed shirts,

travel shirts,

Iowa State University shirts,

Architecture themed shirts,

this shirt I never wear because Steven hates,

and race shirts I hope to have made in to a quilt or something.

How often do you “purge” your clothes? Does you hold on to any sentimental clothing items?

  1. The last big time we did it was when we moved – or rather, before we moved. I try to do it with the changing seasons, but it probably happens more like every 6 months. It feels so good though!

I want that Bambi Vegetarian shirt! I purge clothes whenever I buy more clothes. If I buy 3 things, I get rid of 3 things.

    YAY – It’s the weekend!

I usually go through my clothes in the spring and fall. Its hard for me to get rid of clothes but if I havent warn them or they don’t fit I get rid of them.

I just did a purge too right before the new year. I had a really hard time parting with stuff I got while living in England.
That junk in the box shirt is…um…interesting.

I’ve done the clothing purge twice in the past few months. Both times I had multiple bags to take to Goodwill! I read once that you’re supposed to hang everything on hangers with the hangers facing the opposite way from normal and when you wear that item you turn the hanger to face the normal way. That way at the end of the season you can see what you’ve worn and what you haven’t. I’ve never tried it but it sounds like it might work!

That is a really good idea! I should try that. I know a few shirts were in good condition and fit, but I got rid of them because I was not wearing them.

I feel like I’m almost always cleaning out – not a TON of stuff, obviously, but I’ll gradually prune and then take clothes to Goodwill or another organization, and then I start up again. I do have some items that I don’t wear much but I really like them and/or they are cool or they do have SOME meaning to me (like the leather miniskirt that I rarely wear these days…. Sigh. I’ll probably get rid of it when I turn 40, but it’s an awfully nice skirt!).

I LOVE to purge old clothes. Okay, mostly because I feel like it justifies buying new clothes to fill their place. And it makes me feel good to donate them. ๐Ÿ™‚ I try to purge my closet at least twice a year.

I want to make my race shirts into a quilt or something, too! Are you going to try and do it yourself, or will you have someone else do it? Can I just send you mine? ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • kilax says:

I am going to have to have someone else make the quilt! I wish I could do one for me… and you! ๐Ÿ™‚ I am not good with thread and needles and fabric…

  8. Steven says:

It’s not that I hate the shirt. I think the shirt is quite hilarious. I just think people might get the wrong impression if you that shirt in public…
I don’t think anyone can really argue with that concern…

  9. Ayla says:

Lol! I love that last shirt.. hahaha. That’s awesome. ๐Ÿ˜€

I probably purge clothes once or twice a year and yes, I definitely hold onto sentimental clothes.. for a time being. Eventually I end up throwing away some of the meaningful pieces of clothes if I find that I really have NO need for them and they’re just taking up space.

I love purging clothes (and really anything – I purged lots of twitter people today and email lists yesterday!)
Why are random tshirts so hard to get rid of? I never wear them, and hardly ever look at them, but have a million I ‘have’ to hold onto. I swear if I get a sewing machine, I’m making shirt quilts just to do something with them.

    • kilax says:

I am a total purger too. I also got rid of a lot of other stuff today! ๐Ÿ™‚

And the shirts… ugh. They DO hold on to us. What is it?!?!

  11. Etta says:

I purged big time when we moved to IL. We need to do it again soon.

  12. Claire says:

I’ve got a stack of t-shirts I can’t seem to part with (concerts, films I worked on, a few I love that are falling apart).

  13. Mica says:

I should purge my clothes more often. I have so many things that I don’t wear–and I don’t even buy that much!

I realized that I am accruing a ton of t-shirts from races and events. I should really get rid of them, but I’m a sucker for plain, cotton T-shirts. I mean, they’re just so practical!

    • kilax says:

I don’t buy much either, which makes me feel ashamed that I have SO MUCH to get rid of. ๐Ÿ™

  14. I’m in the process of purging clothes as well ๐Ÿ™ I have soooo much clothing, and a lot of it isn’t the right size, or I just don’t like it. Giving some of it to friends is a really fun way to get rid of stuff, and I’ve done that, but I still have huge bags of stuff to take to Goodwill.

I have a lot of tshirts that I need to make a quilt out of… but first I need to learn how to quilt!

  15. sizzle says:

I did a clothes purge before returning to work in the new year. I hauled every item of clothing (including scarves and shoes and such) and piled it on my bed. I discarded anything that I hadn’t worn in the last few months or that didn’t fit. Now when I open a drawer or closet everything is an option. It feels fantastic.

  16. martymankins says:

OMG, I love those t-shirts. So awesome. Tell Steven he needs to get a sense of humor on the junk in a box t-shirt. (he he)

I do a clothes purge once a year, but it’s not much since I have so many shirts and pants that I love. Most of my purge are my white under t’s that get too gray and pit stained, which normally just become rags. I do go through my 12 coats I have once a year and give a few away, only to replace them the next winter with newer ones.
