A little late to the smoothie trend

What’s that in my hand?!

It’s my first Green Monster!

Ha. I have to laugh. I have read about these smoothies for so long on the blogosphere and have never had one. But Jen corrected that for me and Steven on Saturday night! She made one with hemp milk, Sun Warrior protein powder, frozen bananas, spinach, avocado and ice (did I forget anything?).

And – it was DELICIOUS!

Jen and her husband told me and Steven that these are not the best smoothies they’ve ever made, but I was very impressed. Darn, does this mean I have to invest in a Vitamix now?

Just kidding. We are kind of anti “specific-use kitchen appliance” in our house. And we don’t have the room. But I could see myself making these things from time to time if I did have a blender.

Do you ever make smoothies? What do you like to put in them?

Yup! You got the ingredients right. I can’t wait til it warms up a little more and we start craving smoothies. They are packed with nutrients!

    Yay glad you like it!
You must get a blender or at least an immersion blender–i made them for years that way.
I usually put: frozen berries, coconut milk, protein powder, and spinach, maybe a splash of oj.

Is a blender really a one-use appliance? I guess because I’ve used mine for smoothies, mixed drinks, milkshakes and even some soups that I think it’s a necessary kitchen item.

There are a few types of smoothies I like to make. My current favorite is peanut butter, milk, vanilla protein powder, chocolate syrup and, of course, ice. Yum!!

I guess I have only ever thought of them to make smoothies, but it sounds like you can do a lot more with them! I just wish we had more cabinet space. 🙂 I think it would be fun to make these! Especially that one you came up with!

I have a Magic Bullet (As Seen on TV) and I love it. It makes single serving smoothies (among other things) that you drink directly out of the cup you blended it in. Very easy clean up. I’ve made green monsters and regular fruit smoothies- all delicious.

My husband and I are big smoothie people; usually for breakfast, we drink them on the commute to work. We have a great Kitchen Aid blender from our wedding, but when it dies, I have my eye on a VitaMix.

Ours are mostly fruit (bananas and berries), water (because we make them the night before, no point in putting in ice) and protein powder. Sometimes we’ll add spinach, but we both prefer our spinach solid most of the time.

I don’t know that vitamix blender seems pretty bad ass…you can do a lot of stuff in those things. 🙂

Woah! Way cute shirt! Love it!!!!

Ok, it’s not about the smoothie, but I totally thought you were holding a bouquet full of flowers in your right hand because of your shirt!

I love smoothies! They are great because you can get soooo creative. When I was on my last antibiotic I was mixing up a lot of yogurt smoothies, because I don’t like yogurt straight up.
A blender is one of the first things I bought when I got my first apartment. They come in VERY handy! 🙂

During the summer, we make smoothies with all sorts of fruits and a bit of ice cream to make them just a bit on the creamy side.

  11. I have a green monster every morning, and I LOVE them! I usually use a banana, spinach, frozen berries and almond milk. Pineapple and coconut milk are a good combination in there too.

I didn’t want to try them because they seemed “trendy,” but I do really LOVE them. And it might be mental, but I swear they make me feel better, too! I love a frozen banana, frozen berries, ice, milk, and spinach (or kale…I swear it doesn’t taste bitter)!

    • kilax says:

Ha. I thought they seemed trendy too. In fact, my original title for this post was “we’re trendy” but I thought that was too snotty so I took it down.

I would love to incorporate them in to my diet and see if I felt any different after awhile!

i have yet to make a green monster. during the summer (when it’s not oatmeal season) i have smoothies every morning.
oj, banana, yogurt, frozen berries (and sometimes pineapple), emergenC packet, peanut butter, flax seed…. i’m probably forgetting something. =)

and i agree. a blender is definitely not a one-use kitchen item. i make soup in mine. don’t like margaritas, but it’s always an option.

Ooh the Vitamix is def. a multi-use appliance! I use mine for everything! (You can even cook stuff in it!) Perfect for lazy cooks like me:) And congrats on your first green monster! I don’t love smoothies – I like to chew thank you – but the green monster is a good one!

  15. YAY Green monsters!! 🙂 Well I’m glad you finally tried one! LOL! I absolutely could not live without them. My favorite classic combo is (spinach, almond milk, peanut butter, banana, and cocoa powder). Chocolate-peanut butter goodness!!!

I’d been on a blender/smoothie bend for quite a while last year, using mainly 1/4cup kefir, 1 banana, 1 apple and a handful of spinach plus other ingredients I might think of at that time (a bit of ginger was nice, added a bit of zing). Then I got tired of having to wash it out every time. Then it’s stood on the kitchen counter gathering dust for quite a while. I made some smoothies again in October when I first found out about Nova, determined to pump lots of spinach into my system early on. Then again I got tired of washing things out. It also got cold, and I didn’t want to have a cold ‘drink’ and make me even colder (I am a wimp when it comes to cold weather!). Now that it’s warming up again, I’m eying that blender yet again… 🙂

    And frozen berries and kale.
