Do you remember how you found the blogs you read?

By , April 20, 2011 5:12 am

When I was in Kansas City on Monday, I had a chance to meet up with Laura, who reads my blog.

We only had a short bit of time to meet, but we had a blast chatting. Laura is a great conversationalist, and such a sweetie (and what a knockout – she’s so pretty!). I think everyone needs a friend like her – she’s a great listener and shows genuine interest in what you are saying – just being around her makes you feel good about yourself.

And would you believe that Laura has two young kids? She doesn’t look like it! Her 18 month daughter, Ava, was actually there when we were chatting, and she was being such a sweetie, just playing with her books, then showing extreme interest in my Chai Latte to-go cup right before we left (she was being so cute – pretending to drink out of it (it was empty)).

Laura was training for the 2010 Chicago Marathon when she found out she had a stress fracture in her hip! And it’s taking forever to heal. She said her plan now is to take a full year off from running, then start back slowly again. We decided we’ll have to do a race together someday! She suggested the 2012 Chicago Marathon (Laura lived in Chicago the first 10 years of her life, before moving to near Kansas City).

When we were chatting, Laura told me that she found my blog through a comment I left on the blog of a friend from her running club. That person has since stopped blogging, which is a shame – I could totally relate to her and loved her blog. But I am happy it brought me and Laura together! She is a total sweetheart and I can’t wait to meet up with her again!

Our conversation got me thinking – I read so many blogs now, that I can rarely remember how I found that blog in the first place! Some, I can, but not many. I think I find a lot the same way Laura found mine – by comments on other blogs.

Do you remember how you found the blogs you read? Any fun stories to share about finding blogs? How did you find my blog?

  1. I think I found you when you commented on my blog. So how did you find me? 🙂

Who knows!!! Do we read any of the same blogs? I bet I saw you comment on another one… or featured on another one?

  2. Odie says:

I think I found you through Kapgar. I know it was when you were in Rome. And then there’s the whole ISU connection.

  3. Kandi says:

I found you on a comment you left on Jill’s (onelittletrigirl) blog. 🙂 I can remember how I found a lot of the blogs I read but not all. Most of them are from comments on other blogs I read or when people post links from their blogs.
I am guessing you found mine after I commented on yours.

I don’t remember how I found your blog – I remember which running blogs I found first but that’s about it. I think i just started googling running blogs and then would follow links on those sites to other blogs!

That reminds me – at point in time I found this huge list of running blogs across the US and I think I looked at a lot of them!

  5. Kristi says:

I found most of mine from clicking links on the lists of blogs other runners read. I think I found your blog by searching for that Sony Walkman I won from you! 😉

  6. Jen says:

Yeah, I’m the same, I find blogs through comments or guest posts. Or if a blogger references another blogger. Usually I do a quick peek at the new blog and if I see some pictures, I read it.

    • kilax says:

So you only like to read blogs that have pictures? I have only been putting pictures in every post since last spring, after I asked people if they prefer I do, and they said yes 🙂

  7. Laura says:

I am SO honored that I got mentioned on your blog!! Thank you so much for all of your wonderful compliments. I had such an awesome time meeting you. I only wish we had more time to talk. I know we dont know each other that well yet but I think you are such an amazing person and have such a big heart. I left that morning after meeting you in such a good mood and that was because of you!! You too are such an easy person to talk to and Im so glad that I found your blog. Not only do I learn things whenever I read your blog, it always makes me smile and is entertaining at the same time. You keep it so real and are so honest and genuine. I dont mean to sound so sappy, I just hope you know that you are a great person and you have really made an impact on me. I hope this is just the start to our friendship. I think we have a lot in common and only wish we lived closer! Have a wonderful day and talk to you soon! Thanks again for such a wonderful post about our meeting :-).

Aww, Laura, you made my day with your comment. It sounds like we had a mutual feeling about each other. I could have sat there chatting all day! We need to make sure we have time for that the next time I am in town. I don’t mind getting away, hee hee 🙂

You always meet the best bloggers 🙂

I think I found your blog by doing a Google search for Chicago bloggers. I don’t really remember! I found others by Google Reader recommending them or through the blog rolls on other blogs. Sometimes comments, too.

I was a searching fool when I first started training for Chicago last year. I tended to focus on Chicago area bloggers (and those running Chicago) and MN bloggers (since that’s where I’m from) at first, but then it branched into craziness, and now I rarely remember how I found anyone.

And everything Laura said is true – you are awesome 🙂

    • kilax says:

I love finding bloggers from here, my hometown or KC (since we sometimes go there). It’s fun to find someone who blogs from an area you are familiar with.

      And thank you 🙂

  10. I’ve found people in the most random ways- but mostly through other blogs.

Sorry to hear about her stress fracture! Those silly bones… Grrrr…

  11. Linzi says:

I love it when I find a blog randomly and it becomes a favorite. I think I found your blog, because you left me a comment one day after christmas of 2009. So I guess I should ask you if you remember how you found me? 🙂 But either way, I’m glad because I love reading your blog!!

    • kilax says:

Aww, thanks! I cannot remember how I got to your blog! We must read some of the same people and I saw you there? I am so bad at remembering!!!

  12. I can remember how I found a lot of the blogs I read, but not all of them. I have a weird memory though, I can remember the most random things, but I can never remember what I got up for at work. Its sad.

    • kilax says:

Ha! I am TOTALLY the same way. I need to start making to-do lists in the bathroom at work, because I think of things, then immediately forget them by the time I get back to my desk.

  13. I think you found me- and I am glad you did! I only remember the ones I first found- before I was a blogger. And I remember a few that come with stories, like IronMike I met through Rick. And Rick I met through Rachael who I stopped reading a long time ago. I think now, most of them are ones that read me- or that I meet by chance, like a Boston. I read so many now that I hardly pick up new ones on my own. After 2.3 years of blogging, I really have begun to stick to ones with connections. All others pretty much get dropped, unfortunately. I never want to be the type that is overloaded, or cannot keep up. I like that I have genuine relationships with my bloggers. So, while new finds are great and totally welcome, I don’t seek them out.

  14. Dave2 says:

I honestly can’t remember any of that stuff. It seems like my bloggy friends have been in my life forever!

  15. I always find new blogs through links. I never remember where I found the link to anyone though.

  16. really i think i stumbled upon a lot of the blogs that I read consistently just by clicking through from a comment that they left!

  17. sizzle says:

I wish I could remember how I found blogs. Mostly through comments or other blogger’s recs. I can’t even remember how I found you! I blame my age and memory. 😉

  18. martymankins says:

I’ve been blogging in some form or another since 2002 http://www.chillywilly.org/2002/02/ but it wasn’t until sometime in 2006 when I found Dave2’s blog and then started seeing who was commenting and reading their links.

I found your blog through Kevin Apgar’s blog, who I found on Dave2’s blog. The Blogging Circle of Life.

  19. Adam says:

Honestly? I have NO idea how I found your blog. As I think back, I honestly don’t really remember how I found most blogs. I’m just glad that I did 🙂

  20. I think I found you through Healthy Living Blogs – maybe? I read so many and started reading a lot of new ones at the same time last year that I can hardly remember how I found all the awesomeness!

    • kilax says:

I know I found yours when you left a comment on Running Around Normal saying you were doing the half next weekend! 🙂

  21. Bethany says:

Huh. I do not remember at all how I found your blog. That’s pretty sad…but then again, I don’t know how I found most of the blogs I read! It’s funny though, I tend to add a bunch of new blogs to my reader and then after a month or so, sift through and weed ones I don’t really care to read anymore. Yours always makes the cut! 😉

  22. Geez, I can’t remember (or not) if I was reading you before I met you in Chicago with the other bloggers or not. I remember two things:

    1) Wasn’t that you who wasn’t actually using blogging software for your blog at the time (or maybe shortly before)? I guess if I’m wrong than this isn’t really two things…

    2) It was a week before the wedding and you’re there hanging out with strangers! And you even got Steven to come along. That was a blast 🙂

    • kilax says:

Yeah, that was me. I was still hand coding. I didn’t want to switch over to wordpress and didn’t know anything about reader. My, how things have changed. And that was a blast meeting up!!!

  23. Michel says:

Did you find me or did I find you? I’m not sure! It was definitely at the time of the Chicago marathon. You were one of the first posters and someone who still posts! That hasn’t happened much from that post!

  24. Robin says:

I met you in Chicago for DaveCago! So I found you through Dave2!
