Personal Training (something to be excited about!)

By , May 11, 2011 12:22 pm

I’ve been talking to the personal trainer (Brian, from Essential Fitness) who runs the weekly strength class I take about doing one-on-one sessions in June. We have class on Tuesday nights, and that schedule won’t work for me in June-August* so I asked him about one-on-one sessions, and I think they will be affordable! And he will come to my house! All I have to do is walk downstairs in workout clothes (and move the couch so we have some room to work).

It’s time to get buff**!

I wore these Sugoi Midzero Arm Warmers during my race on Saturday. The one I still haven’t written about. At this point, I am hoping the race photographer puts up some photos for me to use since no one was there taking any.

I am excited. I really like working with Brian. He is energetic and creative with workouts – you never do the same thing twice. And I have a lot to work on. I wonder how far I will get with two sessions a week?

Have you ever used a personal trainer? Did you like working with them? Did you have any specific goals with them?

I want to:

  • improve my core strength – I can do at least 10 pushups in a row, but my form is probably all off
  • learn how to do crunches correctly
  • tone up my arms (my bat wings)
  • strengthen my lower legs to aid in running
  • slim down my lower legs (I kind of have lower legs that look like drumsticks so that would be nice)?

I am naturally muscular, but my form stinks when it comes to strength training. It would be great to have someone there telling me what to do!

*for a really stupid reason – I like to attend the free “Events in the Plaza” concerts run on Tuesday night by the Lake County Forest Preserve District. Steven and I sometimes make a picnic and go. I know – DORKY! Anyone want to come?
**Oops, don’t want to scare Steven off – toned! Not buff.

I really really want to work with a personal trainer sometime. But I have zero budget at the moment…someday – I have so much to work on!

(not a stupid reason! that sounds like a lot of fun!)

You should work with Brian when you have the $. I really like him!

And you should take your fam to the concerts! There are usually lots of kids there!

I have never worked with a personal trainer, but maybe some day. I really need to start strength training though. I keep thinking of doing other workouts but never do…maybe during the summer 🙂

I worked with a trainer from about October through February. He set up my program, we went through it together one time, and he was available through text or email anytime. But I did all the workouts on my own. I lost 22 pounds and a significant body fat % (can’t remember how much now). I liked having a set program but then he started designing plans that were a bunch of crazy trainer type exercises. I don’t like feeling silly when I strength train! So I dropped him. He still owes me a session so I think we’re gonna meet next week and I already told him that machines are my friends. I just want another circuit program to alternate into my mix. Good luck. I bet you have great results!!!

I am not sure if that would work for me – I want someone there with me telling me if I am doing things right or not. Good for you for doing so well on your own! That’s awesome!

I have used a P.T and I really liked it because she kept the work outs dynamic. They were always challenging but more importantly they were fun and interesting so I did not feel like Iw as working out. I also learned proper weight lifting techniques that have protected my wrists. I would love to get another one but, will settle for my gym classes.

Enjoy and let us know about your progress!

  5. with two sessions a week you will have a rockin body in no time!! i liked my trainer because he pushed me, but he also didn’t listen and made my legs hurt so much i couldn’t run for 4 days

    • kilax says:

Yeah, I have to tell that to Brian – sometimes my legs are so sore (in a good way) after a workout that it’s hard just to sit down on the toilet! Hopefully there will be less of that.

A personal trainer that comes to your house??? So jealous! You will be so toned after twice a week sessions.

I had a personal trainer for a while after I got married. She was okay. I don’t think she ever really pushed me to do what I was truly capable of, though.

    • kilax says:

It would be cool if you lived closer – we could do the couples sessions!

I know Brian will push me – even now, in class, he makes me use the same weights as the guys. Ha ha. He doesn’t let me slack!

Do you ever think you will get a personal trainer again?

  7. Ooohh Im excited to hear how you like it! I considered hiring a personal trainer once. A friend from high school (who I’ve rarely seen since) started up a business and I considered hiring him. But he does a whole “program” where you’re working with him like 5 days a week. I asked him when I was supposed to run, and he told me cardio is included in the plan, so it wouldnt matter. Of course is matters! I need to run! So Im sticking with Jillian Michaels in my living room for now. 🙂

    • kilax says:

His plan sounds more like P90X! I remember my husband was doing that when we trained for our first half and it was a struggle to get running in! Brian is in the club so he knows running is important to me.

I love the Shred. I still have not been brave enough to try the yoga DVD of hers that I have!

I like working out in classes w/ a teacher. They tell me what to do, but I’m not the only one they’re watching. Personal trainers always look bored!

    • kilax says:

Brian always does all the moves with us so he doesn’t seem bored. I wonder if that is what he will do at the one-on-one sessions too!

I have a personal trainer and love her. She makes me work harder than if I did it myself. Right now I am doing her boot camp three days a week. It’s nice to have some others suffering through the pain with me.

I’m loving the look with the arm sleeves. You look so hardcore! That whole outfit makes you look hardcore. Love it!
I have never used a personal trainer. The people who work at my gym offer deals on their personal training sometimes but I’ve never really wanted to work with them. Not sure why. I’m sure it would be beneficial but I’d also have to be in the right frame of mind to want to listen to them I guess.

  11. Kristina says:

Congrats on treating yourself to something that you might normally not! I have never had a personal trainer, but when I was in rehab for my knee, I went to this super intense sports-fitness place, and my physical therapist was basically like a trainer. She KILLED me some days, but it was SO SO good! Also, I’ve been taking swim lessons, and I pay the group rate, but I’m often the only one in the lesson.
I do feel that a trainer or teacher will push you more than just being with a friend or a group of random people. Or that has been my experience! I do think it’s fair to be honest and let him know what you want and what your expectations are.
    Very cool though!

  12. J says:

Well that is very exciting! I wish someone would come to my house and make me workout lol! Even if it was someone who would make me go to the gym so that I would actually lift weights.

  13. Exciting! I like the idea of the personal trainer at your home and can’t wait to hear about it. I did a couple of sessions at a gym a few years ago and liked them. Cost — and him not helping me to set up a DIY program to do on my own — were why I quit.

I am re-setting my own strength goals & activities now, but certainly the in person push will help you get to your goals more quickly!

  14. Amy says:

I only worked with a personal trainer once, when I was visiting my mom and she let me come along for her session. But my sister is a personal trainer so I hear a lot about it, and I think it is great to have someone help you out – and how cool he will come to your house!

  15. I don’t think that’s a stupid reason at all, sounds fun and maybe we will see you there sometime.

I have never worked with a personal trainer but I think it would be awesome. When you said his name was Brian I had to click through and see if it was the hottie guy I used to swim with at the gym. He was a personal trainer and was super super nice. The picture doesn’t look like him. Anyway, I know you are going to have so much fun and get super fit. Awesome! I can’t wait to hear about it!

  16. The closest I ever had to a personal trainer was my PT, and I loved it. I really want to hire a running coach, but I cannot justify the money. Plus, with my crazy schedule, I dont even know if I would make it work with a coach.

Love the photo by the way!

  17. sizzle says:

That’s awesome! You are going to get so buffed. Seriously.

  18. Christina says:

Why is it dorky that you go to the free concerts?? That sounds like a ton of fun!! They have free movies in Overman Park on Thursday nights I think, and sometimes I want to go, but they are usually kid-type movies, and I’m usually too lazy to get out of the house……

  19. cher says:

i did hire a trainer at one point. i would say that i likely will not do it again, or if i do, i’m choosing someone that has a similar natural body type to myself.

i chose this girl, she seemed great. but she had a lean runners body and had been a runner since high school. i, however, do not have a runner’s body, nor will i ever. it’s just the way i’m built. i warned her that i put on muscle quite quickly…she poo pooed it and trained me the way that she wanted to. i gained and gained muscle in my legs and when it got to the point that my pants were not fitting, i said good bye!

  20. Kate says:

I had a personal trainer a couple years ago that I LOVED. Marisa had a great personality and definitely helped me improve my strength, plus she made me less nervous about the free weights area … I hate being around all those dudes who grunt and drop weights and stare at any girls who come near.
