Random Thoughts Thursday

By , July 14, 2011 7:10 am

I’ve had a lot of random thoughts that aren’t amounting to full blog posts lately so here are the snippets:

  • If your neighbors were outside being loud past 10:00 pm and you couldn’t sleep, would you do something about it? Would you try to talk to them or just call the police? I cannot tell you how many times we have had to call the police to tell our idiot neighbors to STFU. We tried to talk to them once and Steven was verbally assaulted so the cops have just told us to call them and not communicate with our neighbors. Will do. Had to last night. Sigh.
  • Do any of your family members blogs? My sister started a blog this week. I will let her share it in the comments if she wants.
  • I’ve noticed a lot of my tops and dresses are wrap tops or have belts/ribbons to tie around the waist. What’s up with that?
  • I am on work travel next week, then on vacation for a whole week then in training the next week… meaning I don’t have to do downtown all that much for awhile. WOO HOO! I am so sick of the train commute.
  • We are going on a short vacation to New York City!
  • I was able (schedule-wise) to run track last night – my first time meeting with the club. We did 3×800. I am not sure if I should be happy I was able to run the paces I did, being so fat, or if I should be disappointed in myself for being so inconsistent, and fat. I run so much faster  (and it’s easier!) when I am slimmer. But I have known that for a long time and done nothing about it, so, yeah.
  • Holy crap this book makes me cry (picture below). Why do animal stories always do that to me? Damn you, Dewey!

Luckily I’ve never had to deal with loud neighbors at my new house. We used to have lousy upstairs neighbors at the old apartment and when I’d had enough I would bang on the ceiling. I almost called the cops one time though because their fight sounded like it could have been violent.
None of my family members have blogs but I think it would be great fun if my mom did. Maybe I’ll make her one someday. She has all sorts of stories to tell (and she’s a runner!).
Cute shirt in that pic! I haven’t bought new clothes (other than dresses) in a while so I have not picked up that trend yet.
Enjoy NYC!! Wish you were coming to DC. 🙂

  2. Etta says:

We had the noisy neighbor/pet problem in our old apartment. We were sleeping w/ the windows open one night and the dog upstairs was howling. The hubs actually said “STFU” in a loud tone. The neighbors heard him and quickly tried to shut their dogs up. Unfortunately, we had to call the office to complain about them on several other occasions.

  3. Michel says:

Yes! On the assphat neighbors. UGH. I spent all of last summer calling the nonemergency number of our local pd because of the pricks across our alley. Partying on a Wednesday like someone just got out of jail was what it was like almost all summer. Good news the person who owns got new tenants. They also had a bongo party on a Sunday afternoon after I had a long run and was trying to nap. If the guy looked like Matthew McConaughey I wouldn’t have called but he did not. lol

If anyone in my family blogs they certainly aren’t as open about it as I am. lol

  4. Susan says:

I admittedly yell out the window or throw things at the wall. I’m attempting to be confrontational without actually doing anything. Plus, in order to call the police in NYC, you actually have to know where it’s coming from, and when a bajillion apartments are behind you, you can’t always tell.

    Yayyyyy NYC!!

  5. martymankins says:

Our next door neighbor routinely is up late, but is rarely noisy. Mostly just fire burning at night, which causes the air to be pretty smelly. But if he were noisy, I would say something after several nights. I would hope that neighbors use common courtesy instead of waiting for someone to complain. The rare noisy nights I would say nothing, assuming they were just having a party.

  6. martymankins says:

None of my family blogs. I am the only one. One of these days, my daughter will start a blog, but she is still in the decision mode of trying to think about what she wants to blog about.

  7. Katie H. says:

Animal books always make me cry too! I haven’t read that one but I’ve heard of the story- it sounds really sweet.

I would definitely do something about it. When I was in grad school we had these neighbors that were incredibly loud (blasting music at 11:45 pm on a weekday night). After management failed to do anything, I eventually called the police. I kind of felt guilty but at the same time they had numerous warnings and were incredibly inconsiderate.

  8. Books and movies about animals always make me cry too. I read The Art of Racing In The Rain, and sobbed.

  9. Christina says:

My neighbors are pretty obnoxious. They are in a band so they practice in their basement often (they’re not good). Across the street from me its not uncommon to see our neighbors sitting in their front yard in a baby blow-up pool drinking beer with a sign propped up reading “YOU HONK, WE DRINK” (so classy).

My sister blogs. Have you seen her site? http://www.ilaxstudio.com/blog its pretty sweet. 😉

Have fun traveling! And I can’t read sad books about animals. :'(

http://designerintraining.blogspot.com/ <– There's my blog! Its definitely a work in progress!

    Love you snis!

  10. I think people need to be understanding of noise during the day. But, at night? My limit is 10pm during the week and 11p on the weekends. I have called the cops before and do not blame you one bit!

Also, wrap tops and dresses? Super flattering on all figures!

    • kilax says:

Yeah, we don’t call until after 10:00. Even though they sometimes rev the engine to their motorcycle all. day. long.

  11. Kristina says:

Sounds like calling the police is your best recourse.
Enjoy NYC. We just got back from the East Coast and were in NYC for 3 days. I’d totally recommend a restaurant, but I think we ate meat or dairy for almost every meal. We’re now trying to eat our veggies!

  12. sizzle says:

The shirts/dresses are belted to show off your waist. The eye is drawn there when it’s tied. 🙂

Any book about an animal and/or inspiration would certainly make me cry.

    Yay for NY!

    Definitely just call the cops.

  13. RunningLaur says:

My neighbors have a band that practices almost every single day, but they always seem to stop promptly at 10PM. I suspect that this is because of prior police intervention. I’d just keep calling the police. Eventually the police will get so annoyed with them, I’m sure they’ll do something to ‘make’ them comply. I’m also sure you’re not the only one around who would complain.

I’m SO in favor of shirts that wrap like that. It’s pissed me off like crazy that the only shirt styles I’ve been able to find in the last 2 years are very blousy and loose. One of my best features is my small waist – this style is particularly flattering for me, where as the big loose shirts of recent make me just look like a tub.

    Hooray for vacation and travel!

    • kilax says:

Actually, we ARE the only ones who complain. Sigh. We live in a townhome with two other homes attached. The set across from us is three homes too. So, out of these 6 homes, three of them are related (all renting, we are the only owners), one is empty, and one is a friend of the annoying people. HATE.

The flowy blousy shirts look like shit on me too. Some make me look pregnant!

  14. RoseRunner says:

you have super interesting random thoughts today. Your neighbors!! my goodness. yikes. You also clearly aren’t living in a city like Oakland….which is where I live, and cops won’t show up for a car break in, a car theft, a mugging, simple assault, etc…they only show up for the big crimes. because there are so many crimes here. In other words, the cops here would probably fine you for wasting their time if you called about a noise issue.

And, I do have neighbor noise issues too. They have mostly been receptive to our pleas though. thank god.

    • kilax says:

I felt really bad calling the cops this week because we had a crazy storm on Monday and so many people were still without power and in more need than us… but damn, I wanted those kids to STFU! I had to get up at 4:30 am the next day! I apologized to the cops for calling.

  15. Mica says:

I haven’t had to call the police (like when my upstairs neighbor was having “fun lady time” for a little too long….), but I definitely would–especially in the situation that you are describing!

I like tops with ties! They accentuate your waist, which is always a good thing.

    Have fun in NYC!

  16. Remember to go to some falafel! It’s on MacDoughal St, which is literally on the street RIGHT behind the Peanut Butter Co. in West 4. BEST FALAFEL EVER! (Get the falafel sandwich.) Also they’re open almost 24 hours, so pretty easy to fit a time to go there!

And you should get in touch with Tracy from gotracygo.com!

    • kilax says:

I think we will get falafel for sure this time (if not when we go in November). And Tracy and I are doing our long run together! 🙂

  17. Denise says:

Did you read the original Dewey book? I have it if you want to read it. It made me cry also. I will have to get the new Dewey book. He was a very special cat!

About the noisy neighbor- if it was constant. I would probably call the cops

I always love the clothes that you wear! You always look great!

    • kilax says:

I did read it (and do have it). I am not sure if I finished it because it made me cry so much. You should read this one if you already haven’t!

      And thanks 🙂

  18. Erin says:

In your situation I would call the police since you already know the neighbors won’t be receptive. Does your town or your neighborhood have a noise ordinance? I’m still surprised that the cops never cite your neighbors.

Tops like that look good on you which is probably why you gravitate to them. They don’t always look so good on me so I don’t have very many.

I tried to read The Art of Racing in the Rain too soon after Trinka Deu passed away and I couldn’t do it. I think I’m still a little raw because the thought of reading a book about an animal right now is still too hard.

    • kilax says:

We do have a noise ordinance. The cops never seem to get here on time to cite them. But they do come, which we appreciate.

This Dewey book is really getting to me. I think it is making me more emotional than I usually am!

  19. Bethany says:

Our next door college age neighbors are ALWAYS up and partying late. I think my roommate has called the police once or twice on them. We are in condos so they are connected to us. Augh.

Nope, none of my family members blog. My mom knows about my blog though…
