Chex Mix Fail

Don’t forget to enter the Season of Giving Giveaway #3: Fashion!

Also! My best buddy Gina started blogging again! Check out her new blog: mileWON!

Someone, please tell me the secret to making Chex Mix. Whenever I follow the recipe on the box, it never tastes strong enough! Do you just follow the Chex Mix recipe?

Fun fact – Chex Mix calls for Worcestershire sauce, which is not vegan or vegetarian. It has anchovies in it! We bought some vegan Worcestershire sauce to use this weekend. And despite what my mother says, I do not think that is why the Chex Mix was a bit bland. Nor was it the margarine.

Hmm, seems I am getting a bit ahead of myself! Why was I even making Chex Mix? Well, back in November of 2008, my mom (+dad), mom’s mom, and sister came out to Chicago to do what we called the “Holiday Baking Extravaganza,” to make sweets to hand out.  We did it in November because that worked best for us. And we really outdid ourselves that year – baking a ton of different stuff (see here, and here for what my brother did with the cookies I sent back for him), and that was after spending a day in Chicago, sightseeing and shopping.

In November 2009, just my mom (+dad) and mom’s mom came. We still shopped in Chicago and then baked the next day, but not as much (see here).

And in November 2010, my mom (+dad) and sister came, and we just shopped. For two days straight (see here). No baking.

This year, we got back to our roots – one day of shopping, one day of baking. And we made it simple, only three things to hand out: Chex Mix, Caramel Corn, and Almond Bark Covered Ritz PB Sandwiches. Much easier (and it makes much more sense to do it in December).

My mom and grandma also made an apple pie. We didn’t send that out to anyone.

We ate it with dinner. It was as good as it looks.

Do you like to make holiday treats to share with friends and family? What do you make?

Side note: Data and my dad get along really well. Not.

One year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving (it was probably 2009?) I went to a friend’s house along with a bunch of other ladies and we baked a TON of cookies. It was kind of chaotic but fun. I think about 8 or so people were there baking and mixing up cookie dough. We ended up with about 15 different kinds of cookies to take home though. We didn’t give them out as gifts though.
I have never made chex mix before.. I just saw a recipe for Cereal Mix posted on a blog… check it out. http://www.foodlushblog.com/2011/12/dads-guest-post-round-2-cereal-mix.html

I don’t do the chex mix deal either. I have found many recipes on pinterest.com that I have made recently that are very yummy.

No my friends and I like to get to get together and drink ,,,,but I finally, finally, finally convinced one to start running! Yay! I’m excited about that!

  3. My wife’s chex mix is always sort of bland too. She uses the box recipe. My mother-in-law makes it by the box recipe too, but it always tastes stronger. She swears she doesn’t do anything different. I love the stronger tasting chex mix!! My sister-in-law doubles the seasoning mix when she makes it, I think.

I usually make a few different kinds of Christmas cookies and hand some out to our neighbors, piano teacher, and bring some to the in-laws for Christmas eve. The ones I always must make – because they are everybody’s favorite – are Mexican wedding cookies. The nice thing is, they are very easily veganized! Maybe I’ll post the recipe on my blog this month…

You should post it! I have never made those before, but I have seen them in recipes! Don’t they have a few different names?

Thanks for the blog love, Kim!

Everything you baked looks fantastic! I love all the pretty packaging! I never made Chex Mix before, but I had yours and I thought it was yummy.

  6. Hold the phone – Worcester sauce as anchovies in it?! How did I not know this? I’m a little grossed out now…That being said, I can never seem to make a decent batch of Chex Mix either! Someone needs to share their secret with us!

Maybe it’s the brand of Worcestershire that makes or breaks or the Chex Mix? Interesting.

I think I’m being conscripted to help bake cookies when I’m visiting my mom next week. THAT should be interesting. It’s been years since I helped out.

And your goodie towers look amazing!

Great minds must think a like with making chex mix this weekend. Looks like you had fun! I loosely follow the recipe on the box. I can’t say my chex mix is horrible but its probably not super great either. All your goodies turned out great though 🙂

Fun fun! I am having a cookie exchange party this Friday with my girl friends! We are all bringing different cookies and then eating and drinking wine and then exchanging cookies so we can take home a bunch of different types! I can’t wait!

It is funny to me that I remember your 2009 baking extravaganza. It is strange (but cool) to be blogggin with someone so long that you know their holiday traditions!

I’m not a big holiday baker, but I do have a good cookie recipe that I might make.

Chex Mix: buy the little seasoning packets(2/$1)! I use them instead of mixing all of the ingredients. I love them and buy several at a time. I usually make a double batch. Oh my! The apple pie looks delicious!! And Data looks like he’s having an “oh shit!” moment with grandpa. lol

Merry Christmas to you guys!!! <3

Mom had some of those packets but it said “natural ingredients” on the ingreds list and I wasn’t sure if it had the anchovies in it. I should just go for it!

      Merry Christmas!
