Random Thoughts Thursday VIII / RelaxReflect Giveaway WINNER

By , January 26, 2012 5:34 am
  • I started writing a blog post this weekend and was looking through some older posts of mine to reference.  I ended up finding this post from December 2010 saying “I see blogs posts of people attending wonderful holiday parties with their close friends, and I sometimes I think ‘I wish I had a wonderful holiday party to attend with close friends.’ “Geez, if that doesn’t support the social comparison theory I mentioned in this post, I don’t know what does. My, how things change in a year.
  • Related, I wanted to point out this study which says that seeing happy pictures of other people on Facebook makes you sad. Two interesting quotes from the article:

Facebook photos generally depict smiling, cheerful people having good times, conveying a sense of happiness. Of course everyone likes to smile for the camera, so that good cheer may be inflated or false. As others view the photos, they may believe this conveyed sense of  intense happiness is real, making them think that their friends are much happier than they are.

The study, which was published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking, also found that people who spent less time socializing with friends in cyberspace and more time socializing with them in real life were less likely to report they were  unhappy.

  • I stopped writing the blog post I mentioned in the first bullet, because as I was searching my archives, I realized that I was almost completely rewriting a post from the past. Has that happened to anyone else? You start writing something, think “Gee, this seems familiar…” to have it turn out that you have almost written the same thing earlier?
  • I mentioned the other day that I have a really good memory for things that people have said to me. That’s true. But I seem to have no capacity for retaining actual useful information (things I learned in school, trivia, facts, blog posts I have already written, you get the idea). Are you better at remembering factual data, or people-related information?  (<– for lack of a better definition)
  • Kelly was kind enough the other day to explain Pinterest to me. I was really not getting it. You all talk about how cool it is, and you could waste days on there, and I am the QUEEN of wasting time on the internet, but I just couldn’t figure it out. I guess I will give it another try. Who else is digging Pinterest?
  • I find it ironic that an announcement about my work position was made back in December and there has been no update about it. Ironic because I am so pushy, anxious and an instant gratification sort of gal – so making an announcement to someone before I know anything about it would be totally something I would do. A taste of my own medicine, I suppose.
  • Thanks to everyone who is filling out the blog survey! There is a lot of great feedback on there. I kind of wish I could see who is saying what. I would like to know who wrote that the read my blog “Because I think Kim is super hot.” Ha ha. Do you guys want me to do a post talking about the results?

The winner of the RelaxReflect Giveaway is #18, Leah. Leah, please email me your mailing address (kilax@ilaxstudio.com) along with your choice of skull cap (material, style and color) and I will get the order in for you!

I was sort of surprised you couldn’t see the results. I wasn’t able to reply without writing something in this box.

I have gotten away from FB in the last month or so, remind me to tell you why on Monday. I don’t think I bored you with this tidbit yet 😉

    Have a good day!

  2. Kandi says:

I’m better at remembering dates (I’m good with numbers) and moments than facts and trivia. Aside from the numbers thing, I think it depends on how personal something is to me as to whether I’d remember it or not. I’m also more likely to remember something if it corresponds with something else – like I know I purchased my tv on the same day I had surgery.
I’m on Pinterest but I don’t use it that often. I am “friends” with a few people and like to browse what they are pinning. I also do searches occasionally. Yesterday I searched for red bouquets and wedding hair and saved some ideas to a board I just created. If you are on there, find me – atomickandi.
I think you are hot but I don’t think I wrote that on the survey. I also don’t know if mine submitted because I got an error after I hit submit. I think it would be fun to read about the results of your survey.

    • kilax says:

I am super freaky good at remembering dates too – probably for the same reason you mentioned (the personal correlation).

Pinterest seems perfect for wedding ideas! I bet my sis will be using it a lot 🙂

LOL re: hot 😛 Did you fill out all the required (starred) items in the survey? I think some people did not and that is why it did not send 🙂

I’m loving all the stuff you are posting about the comparisons. I find it interesting. Pinterest – totally love it but mostly related to food. I read lots of food blogs and it’s the best way to remember something great I saw on a food blog!

    • kilax says:

Aww, thanks! I am happy someone else finds it as interesting as me!

I want to use Pinterest for recipes too. One weekend I am going to hit it up and see what cool vegan things I can find!

  4. Tracy says:

Admittedly I didn’t read any of your links, but the NYTimes has coined what you’re feeling “FOMO,” aka “fear of missing out.” http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/10/business/10ping.html

    • kilax says:

Thanks for the link! I read about FOMO in a late 2011 issue of a health magazine and wrote about it a few times – now I know where it came from! I really think FOMO is such an intersting (and true!) concept!

  5. Felicia says:

I track everything on pinterest! In fact that Reflect Hat made one of my pinterest boards!

  6. Jen says:

I want to hear about the survey results!

  7. carol says:

Yes, I am curious to hear the results of your poll! When I blog my darker feelings I find that people try to fix me. So for the most part I try not to do it. It does amaze me how many people look at facebook and think that is really representative of someone’s whole life. I don’t do pinterest but know several “addicts”.

    • kilax says:

When you blog – do you mean post on Facebook? Or do you have a blog? Am I being completely dense?

      • carol says:

No, I’m not expressing myself very well. Actually I was thinking of my blogs mostly. I’m on my 4th blog (and this one is rather boring since I don’t do much personal stuff in it) but in the past when I posted more negative (but honest)things is what I referred to. For FB I keep things light.

  8. Kelly says:

Thanks for the shout out! I am interested in hearing the results of the blogger survey! 🙂

  9. Gingerfoxxx says:

pinterest is an addiction!! And you may think all that knowledge you retain is useless, but jeopardy thinks otherwise 🙂

  10. YES!! I’ll email you momentarily.

Im completely addicted to Pinterest. At first I thought it was stupid and a waste of time. Ok, maybe it is a waste of time, but its a really fun waste of time.

  11. Erin says:

Hmmm, maybe I should check out Pinterest for a way to keep track of recipes as well? I guess I don’t really understand it either.

I’m horrible at remembering what you’ve coined as “people-related” information. I’m not great with dates or events but I can kick butt at Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit, usually. Which is pretty much the only thing that knowledge is good for 🙂

Which post were you about to duplicate?

And you should definitely write about the survey results!

  12. Pam says:

I keep hearing people talk about Pinterest, but I haven’t delved into it yet. I don’t need to waste any more time on another internet addiction! Blogging is bad enough! lol

  13. diane says:

    Results, please!
I looked briefly at Pinterest because I want a new “hobby” and it totally overwhelmed me.
I think I might be the only person on earth who feels like Facebook makes my life less full of drama. It’s like I can keep the friends who live in constant drama at arm’s length, and decide to hide them when I want to. I am a bad person. :p
I owe you an email back still. I feel guilty commenting when I haven’t written you back!

    • kilax says:

Don’t feel guilty AT ALL. I feel bad responding to emails instead of reading blogs. So lame 😉

  14. Alice says:

oh man, i love me some pinterest. i find it most useful to pin recipes i want to try (then i move them to a “tried & want to make again” board afterwards if they’re good, so that when i need a quick meal idea i have a whole list of stuff i know i can make & will be good!)

  15. ChezJulie says:

I find your discussions of the social comparison stuff quite interesting.
I have a good memory for things that people tell me that they like, such as books and music.
I don’t get Pinterest, either. I guess if I was planning a wedding or redecorating it would be cool to gather all those pictures together in one place.
I would love to hear about the results of the survey! I am looking forward to it.
I would also like to read your original post about therapy.

    • kilax says:

I will try to work on the therapy post if I stumble across the inspiration again! And I will definitely post the results of the survey! I like that they make little pie charts 🙂

  16. The Linz says:

Oh I think it would be interesting to see some of the results! Share, share!! Also, I just got onto pinterest this past weekend and have become addicted. I think it’s really opened my eyes to creative and easy projects. I’m a visual person, so seeing great recipes and DIY crafts is really inspiring me. You should dedicate a few hours one day, and then you will probably be hooked after that.
