Friday Question #207

By , September 21, 2012 6:09 am

Do you prefer a certain type of pillow? Or are you able to sleep on any kind?

Somewhere along the road, I developed a preference for big, fluffy pillows. But not the kind your head sinks down to the bed on – it has to hold my head up. And if it doesn’t, I put another pillow underneath it. I also like my head elevated a bit.

I’ve thought about this a lot in the past few years, especially as I have traveled more and sometimes stayed in hotels with awful pillows. Whenever I can now, I bring my pillow with me for travel (a synthetic down one from Bed Bath & Beyond).

First World Problem for sure! But it does really affect how well I sleep. We have a lot of pillows in our house, so that guests can choose the type they like… although I think everyone is usually so tired they just go to bed and use the ones on the guest bed.*

*And nearly everyone HATES our guest bed. Sigh. We can only fit a double in our guest bedroom. Yeah. It sucks. I know. I’m sorry, I truly am!

  1. I am super picky about pillows. And all of mine suck. I keep trying to find better ones… ugh.

I prefer a firmer but not too firm pillow. I grew up using a feather pillow and it got to a point where it was fairly lumpy. I would adjust the lumps to where I wanted them and sleep just fine. I haven’t found a feather pillow that I’ve liked since then though. I finally ended up with a memory foam one (not contour! Yuck) and it is alright but still not perfect.

    feather, fluffy ones..two please 😉

My pillow comes with my everywhere. It’s a huge joke among my friends and family how I will literally only pack 1 outfit for a weekend trip just so I have room for my pillow. For me sleep is my #1 priority-clothing less so.

I love my pillow. I wish I had it right now at my desk so I could take a nappy nap.

I like using two pillows. Preferably the firmer ones, because I don’t like the ones where your head sinks down to the bottom, too. But beyond that I’m not too picky because all pillows are a good thing in general. =)

  6. I am pretty picky about pillows. I actually prefer when my head is level with my body, but the pillow has to still be very puffy (but then I have to sink into it to the bed). Life is so hard sometimes

I have to have like four pillows, protecting all sides of my head, much like airbags. We frequently bring our own pillows places because of Matt’s allergies!

  8. Erin says:

The only kind I don’t like are flat, feather pillows or super firm ones where my head can’t even sink in a little bit! Of course, if I’m tired enough it doesn’t really matter.

And people should just be happy you have a real guest bed.

  9. Laima has a pillow that is basically just the cover, could NEVER use such a flat pillow. It’s been years since I’ve found a pillow I loved.

  10. I like a really flat and firm pillow so that my head is even with my body. From reading the above comments and seeing how everyone likes fluffy pillows I feel like a weirdo :P.

  11. Kristina says:

I like firm pillows, but I don’t think that it makes a huge difference. As long as it isn’t lumpy!

  12. chezjulie says:

I like to sleep on two pillows. In hotels I sometimes use a third pillow in my arms like a body pillow.

  13. Okay, this is a weird one: I like super flat pillows. Which means that I like an old, dirty, graying pillow. I don’t like any of the other pillows in our house, because they are too new and clean and fluffy. Yes, it’s crazy!

  14. Marcia says:

My preference has changed over the years. I used to enjoy a fluffy synthetic pillow. Now I like a saggy down one I can fold. It stays colder. Weird.

  15. martymankins says:

Hard to sleep on other pillows, which makes me wish I could pack a pillow I like when I travel.

As for my favorite type of pillow, I’m all about the feather down. And not soft, but medium… so my head sinks in just enough.
