Random Thoughts Thursday XXIV

By , November 8, 2012 6:21 am
  • Awhile ago Sierra asked the question “What is something you want to attend a workshop on?” I couldn’t think of a real answer at the time, but it popped in to my head that I should attend a workshop on how to better wrap gifts. Because I stink at it. I can sometimes cut straight lines, but my gifts always look so boring. Any ideas? (and if you suggest Pinterest, please provide links because I don’t use that site and never really figured it out)

  • I am really good at saying no to things I don’t want to do. In fact… I probably say no too much. But it keeps me happy. Until lately. I have been forced to do a lot of things I do not feel comfortable doing and it’s creating a lot of inner torment for me. It makes me feel out of control and frustrated.
  • I have an update on the package theft and tampering in our neighborhood. Steven filed a police report on Friday. The officer came back that day to watch kids get off the school bus and caught a kid in the act of stealing a package and chucking its contents (not our package this time). The officer got the kid to rat out two of his friends. I think we are still waiting on an update. We did end up losing about $400 worth of items in packages.
  • When I moved out here I wasn’t sure how to choose my doctor beyond them being in our network. So I chose them based on the fact that they had an office in a brand new building somewhat close to my home. Recently I got a letter saying that they are moving to a different office! My doctor is great, but I am bummed they will no longer be so close. How did you choose your care physicians?
  • I’m really excited about this upcoming three-day weekend. Does anyone else have a three-day weekend?

I have a three day weekend and I am über excited! I am sort of the opposite I say yes to a lot of thing but I think I need to change that. Have a great day.

  2. Luckily, my roommate works in the leasing office of a medical building. So I went to her for recommendations of where I should go! Otherwise, I’d be so screwed. Now I need to find a new dentist… ugh

If I want to spruce up my xmas presents, I add curling ribbon. It’s quick and easy and looks pretty. I’m sure there are better, more stylish ideas out there though.
I’m glad they figured out who was trashing the packages! I always worry, especially closer to the holidays, about package theft.
I chose my doctors based on location and whether or not they took my insurance. It hasn’t been too bad. I have had three dentists since I moved here though because the first one went back into the Army and I didn’t like his replacement. I do like my new one though. My primary care doc stopped taking my insurance and I still haven’t choosen a new one.

I’m so glad the thieving vandals were caught. Jerks.
Just realized we are not off MOnday. Probably because we were off on election day.
I too wrap a crappy package. I care about getting the right gift, but I just don’t care enough to go above and beyond on wrap creativity.

I was just thinking that yesterday as I was picking up some wrapping paper!! I would love to find out how to wrap better and even put those fancy bows on the presents!!! I’m gonna stalk your post to see if anyone has any good links!!
I’m a nurse, and the best advice I can give is word of mouth on choosing a doctor. In our city they have a yearly newspaper that is called, “The Best of (our city)”. They have REAL people write in and they put in there the best of EVERYTHING!!! From food, to cleaners, doctors, everything! It’s awesome! Also look for a newcomers package somewhere. I know you’re not new to the area, but I’ve moved a million times and those can be helpful too! Good luck! Sometimes it is hard finding a doc that is a perfect fit!!

Ooo, thank you! Those are good tips! Even though I have lived here for over 5 years I still feel like a newbie, as I am constantly discovering things I didn’t know about!

  6. gina says:

Ugh, I can’t wrap to save my life! I would totally go to a workshop for that. To spruce up presents I add ribbon or stickers or already made bows that you all you have to do is stick on the package. Pinterest has some good tutorials for making bows I can send to you.

  7. I just realized yesterday that I have Monday off. I’m so excited!!!

As far as wrapping goes: I buy 2 pretty wrapping papers that are similar colors, with matching pretty ribbon/bows. It all looks more cohesive and romantic if it’s more matchy…and the bows help too!

  8. Xaarlin says:

Gift wrapping…. I wish I could do it better too. But then again we just tear it open so why bother? 🙂

Glad the cops figured out the package vandals. That just sucks.

Sadly, I do not have a 3 day weekend coming up. 🙁

  9. Thanks for the shout out! I typically go with solid paper (I love just plain brown craft paper) and festive ribbons or rafia.

Catch those PUNKS! I really hate kids that have bad intentions. Keep me updated, I love catching the bad guys

    • kilax says:

You will like this story… maybe (since you love catching the bad guys).

I noticed some kids leave the bus today and vandalize the “do not trespass” signs in the tree orchard behind our house (they tore them out of the ground, threw them around, at each other, etc.). So I called the cops then followed the kids to their houses so they cops would know where to go. Yes. I am crazy.

But it really angers me to see my neighborhood vandalized.

  10. bobbi says:

SO HAPPY the cops are on to the thieving jerks!

I like pretty wrapping paper, but that’s as exciting as my packages ever get…

  11. Stephany says:

Okay, I think you are the only person I know who also doesn’t have a hard time saying no! I run across so many people who can’t say no and I’m like, “It’s really not that hard!” Haha. I have more trouble saying YES sometimes. I’m working on it. 😉

I have found my doctor’s through recommendations from family/friends. I found my therapist through my insurance website, then I googled her name to get some more info and she seemed perfect for me. 🙂

I don’t have a three-day weekend. 🙁 I’m so jealous of those who do! Live it up for the rest of us who have to work, ha.

    • kilax says:

HA HA HA! I say the same thing to people to, like, “and how did you get roped in to doing that again?!”

I really have not had good luck with therapists. That is something I need help with!

  12. diane says:

Oh, you wrap presents like my Dad. 😉
I can get creative with ribbons and color–my mom was VERY anal about gift-wrapping, and somehow I still really enjoy it. But my friend Heather is a master, she does the whole routine with making her own ribbons from fabric. I’m somewhere between her and my Dad. 😉
I got really lucky with my doctor because I mostly picked him due to the fact he had Saturday and Wednesday evening hours. It interested me that he had studied in Sweden but the hours were what really drove my decision. He’s turned out to be the best doctor I’ve ever had.
That’s really horrible about your loss of merchandise. Will you have some way to recoup the losses?
No 3 day weekend here. *pout*

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! That is funny that you are so in between 🙂 I have a few master wrappers in my life too. I don’t ever want to open their gifts; they’re so pretty!

Unfortunately, our home insurance deductible is $500, so it doesn’t make sense to claim the stolen goods. Sigh.

  13. So jealous you have a 3 day weekend!

I can’t wrap presents either but my presents aren’t just boring they looks horrible. The paper never folds right, I can’t but straight lines, I use too much tape, etc. When I can, I give gifts in bags but during the holidays when I have to gift wrap it’s a sad sight.

    • kilax says:

OMG YOU ARE MY WRAPPING TWIN

Are you going to the blogger meet up on 12/15? We should bring our gifts and have the stylish bloggers wrap them for us.

(p.s. the meeting invite is on Facebook)

  14. kapgar says:

Three-day weekend? HA! I have a seven-week weekend! Yay for paternity leave!!!

  15. Etta says:

I’m trying to use up my wrapping paper so I can start using brown kraft paper instead. I like simple and it looks good with any color bow! We generally don’t do a lot of bows/ribbon, though, since we travel. They get squished.

My first doctor here I chose because he had an appointment available soon. My current doctor was recommended to me by several friends. He’s great. We also switched to G’s new doctor on the recommendation of a few friends. I have no problem firing doctors.

  16. Maggie says:

My mom recommended my current doc. My mom is an LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery, post-partum) nurse, and years ago, when I got to the age where I need a “lady” doctor, she recommended the most popular lady doc on her floor. The one all the nurses on her floor go to for their lady needs, and who did my mom’s hysterectomy. I really like my doc.

BUT, for a brief period of time, I went to another doc, because I work for a different healthcare system than my mom and that doc she recommended. And my company offered an insurance plan that was basically the cheapest if we went to our own doctors.

(In a nutshell, doctors can either do private practice and be “on staff” at multiple local hospitals, or they can join a medical group and be “employed” by that medical group/hospital system, which saves them in a lot of administrative headaches, but depending on the group limits which hospitals they can refer their patients to. When I say “our own doctors,” I mean the doctors who are employed by the medical group of the hospital system I work for. For the sake of the patient, it really doesn’t matter if you go with a private practice or employed doc.)

Anyway, I went with that more affordable insurance plan, and since I work in marketing and have helped market them, I had a good idea of the local doctors who were part of our medical group, and I picked the one that seemed the best match for me. She was really nice, but then we moved, and it was easier for me to just go back to that doc that my mom picked out.

ANYWAY, I probably didn’t need to go into quite so much detail, but here is my advice:

    1) First step should always be to check your insurance coverage. That will narrow down the list to what will have the best co-pays, etc, and be the most affordable. Most insurance companies should have a doctor search on their web site.
1a) If you are on some special plan at your company (other than a traditional PPO or HMO), check with your company to see if they have a preferred providers list (basically, they will have the best co-pays, etc).
    2) From that list, see what you can find out online. It’s getting very savvy. We (the system I work for) encourage our docs to do videos so that people can “meet” them and get a feel for their personality before making an appointment.
    3) Ask your other local lady friends if any of them are familiar with your narrowed down list of docs.
    4) You could also ask your current doc if s/he has any recommendations for other doctors close to home. (Or anyone you should stay away from.)

If you find a doc and aren’t sure of your coverage, call your insurance company (there should be a number on the back of your card) to check the coverage. Actually, you should do that anytime you go to a new doctor, just to make sure there are no billing surprises. And if you find a doc you like who doesn’t accept your insurance, you can call the office and ask if they would. Often they are willing to add a new insurance carrier.

I want a three day weekend! Sadly, instead, I get a 6 day work week. Boo.

  18. I have absolutely no clue how to wrap anything!

And, I commend you for being able to say No to keep yourself happy most of the time. It’s one of my biggest struggles, being a pushover, and being so afraid to say no in case I offend/hurt someone.

  19. Erin says:

I still haven’t learned how to tie a bow the way my mom can tie a bow. I suppose I should have her teach me and then just tie a gazillion bows in a row to practice. But, I can still make a package look pretty with fun tags and regular ribbon. I actually like wrapping presents.

I really hope that you have the option to press charges or at least follow up with victim assistance in your county. Those kids should have to pay back the money they basically stole.

Doctors are the worst so I just put up with whoever I get when I need to make an appointment.

And I only have a three day weekend because I’m spending Monday with yooooooou!

    • kilax says:

For Christmas your mom should give you a bin full of bows made for your use! Hee hee hee!!! 🙂

I am excited for our Monday! I think we have a lot of catching up today since I had to cancel our date last week and just had the Wednesday (followed by the Thursday) from hell 🙂

  20. J says:

Enjoy your long weekend! I have to work on Monday 🙁

  21. I usually choose my Doctor’s via a recommendation from a friend. So that generally means it’s geographically based for them.

Or I choose then based on geography for my home or my job. Geographically based for me!

This assumes my insurance accepts them.

If I like my doctor/dentist/whatever I keep them even if I or the job moves.

I love most of my doctors and many of my friends my main doctor and dentist based on recommendations to them (and they aren’t geographically close for most of them).

No 3 day weekend for me, but I get three 4 day weekends – Thanksgiving week, the last week of Nov and the first week of December. Thu Fri Sat Sun off – 3 weeks in a row. I’m very excited about this.
