…to get new shoes

Yeah. I am not sure these shoes are going to last 21 more days of a running streak – look at how worn out they are (circled in red)!

The funny thing is, because of my messed up running gait, only the right shoe is worn down this bad, in this spot. My left shoe is worn down in the front, outer edge. Yay! Messed up gait!

Just look at my left foot! Ooo… who is that sexy guy to my left?! Aww, I miss my old running partner… Okay, and I have to laugh at my bat belt with the camera on it. Obviously, this picture is old…

Where do your shoes wear down first?

At dinner this weekend, I was telling my family how all of my running shoes are worn out (*hint hint, buy me some new ones! ha ha ha). My grandma seemed appalled that they were wearing out so fast. She suggested that I tell the manufacturer they need to redesign the shoe so they don’t wear down so quickly.

Ha ha ha.

I explained to my grandma it is not the shoe… it is ME. I land really funny and wear out those spots fast. If there were to make any changes, it would have to be to add more tread in those areas – and then I would be all off balance! Also, I could stand to lose a few pounds so my shoes last a bit longer.

So, I either need to fix my gait (hmm), lose weight (ha ha), or buy new shoes. Which do you think is the easiest and will happen first? Hee hee.

I think getting new shoes is the best option. When it doubt by a new shoe! πŸ™‚

  2. Kandi says:

Maybe I don’t run as much as you… but my shoes don’t get worn down like that. I also like to think* that I land fairly evenly on my mid-foot (though sometimes I know I strike with my heel) so maybe that’s why?
*This may not be the case but I do try to think about it when I’m running sometimes.
(has anyone ever footnoted a comment before?)

    • kilax says:

Hmm, I am not sure I have ever seen a footnoted comment before πŸ˜‰

I am not sure if this is a mileage/weight/or gait problem. I’ve put in just over 1500 miles on shoes this year though – is that close to what you’ve run?

  3. I don’t know the last time I wore out a pair of shoes, I get new ones often. πŸ™‚ My oldest pair are a par of Salomons (5+ years) that I still wear daily.

  4. Xaarlin says:

Wow! A weird gait indeed.. Looks painful… Some of the muddy monk photos captured my strange leg kick almost too well. I can’t look at them. My legs look crossed while I’m running. Strange.

I think new shoes are always awesome. Heck, putting a pair away for a while and then returning to them is almost as good. πŸ™‚

  5. I vote new shoes! Shoes are fun! If you don’t get new shoes, then I’m using it as an excuse for ME to get new shoes. And, I feel mean saying it, but that is a gait I have never seen. I wonder if it’s something you could focus on in the “off season.”

  6. Whoa those shoes need to go! Maybe your left foot supinates like that because it doesn’t need as much support as your right??? So maybe you need two different shoes…seesh, that would be a pain. My gait is pretty mess up too. But one thing I’ve learned from working at DP is that most people who supinate only do so because their shoe has too much support. What shoe are you wearing? You could probably bump down the support level.

I was recently thinking about getting new shoes, even though mine definitely DON’T look that beat up, and then I developed PF. Maybe a cause-effect relationship? I’m not sure, but I do want to get new shoes. Sigh – they are SO expensive!
Good luck with your running streak, by the way!

I say you listen to Grandma and write to Asics!!! : )

  9. That picture… it looks like your ankle is about to snap! Funny how those race pictures capture our dirty secrets- sometimes I look at mine and wonder how it doesn’t hurt when I run… ha ha!

  10. Maggie says:

Do you only wear one pair of shoes? Or do you rotate pairs? I’m rotating six pairs right now. So I definitely say get a new pair! Or three …

    • kilax says:

I am currently rotating between three street pairs and two trail pairs. This was the newest of the street pairs. I do need to switch them all out. I wonder if trail shoes would hold up longer, too.

  11. I also vote NEW shoes! πŸ™‚ But that is always my vote, cuz new shoe are the best.

  12. Pete B says:

I occasionally think about changing my gait, but at this point, I don’t want to put that much work into making a change, so I will just put up with the one I’ve got and hope for the best.

  13. Kim says:

Ouch! It looks PAINFUL how you’re landing (but I know is just the camera catching it at just the right time).

  14. Changing your gait would be a lot of work and might even lead to more injuries! But perhaps trying other lower profile shoes like Britt suggested would be worth it. Especially since you need new shoes anyway…

I ordered new shoes from The Competitive Foot since I like to occasionally support a local business. They’ll be $$$ but since I haven’t bought new shoes for almost a year I think it’s worth it.

    • kilax says:

It would be fun to try something lower profile. I should go to the local store just to try them on… if they have my size πŸ™

In the meantime, I did order new shoes. These don’t hurt me, they just wear out quickly! πŸ™‚

  15. gingerfoxxx says:

thats crazy that they are so visibly worn out! I usually feel it (around 500+ miles) before the shoe looks worn out. (other than it being generally dirty and smelly)

  16. Sizzle says:

I totally wear through my shoes in weird ways. My boots are proof that I walk weird.

  17. Kelly says:

Wow, your gait is unique! I know my friend Rachael did a gait workshop and said it was a game changer.

  18. Anne says:

Shopping is always the best and easiest option. But I guess I’m an enabler πŸ™‚

How long have you had those shoes anyway? And is gait the type of thing that you can actually change? I’ve never thought too much about it, I guess I just figured I run the way I run and I’m stuck with that.

    • kilax says:

Hmm. I got this pair in the beginning of August and started wearing them shortly after? They only have 172 miles on them! And I think you CAN change gait but it is very difficult. I would rather stick with what I got too πŸ˜‰

  19. Emily says:

I have way too many pairs of running shoes. Based on my average weekly mileage and estimating that each pair of shoes is good for at least 300 miles, I can currently go about 3 years without having to buy a new pair of shoes. But of course I won’t wait that long! So my shoes don’t usually wear out fully before I retire them. I’ve been having lots of fun experimenting with new brands and types of shoes, so I vote that you get new shoes and also consider experimenting a bit!!! There are so many great deals to be had on running shoes around the holidays!

  20. Running shoe shopping is actually fun for me. I wanna see what you get!! πŸ˜€

  21. It looks like your ankle is only a second away from rolling! I have fairly flat feet so my feet roll inward. I’m going to check out the wear on my running shows now!

  22. martymankins says:

Where my shoes wear is on the inside, with the fabric wearing down on the sides of my heels.

    How hold are those Ascis?
