Streaking notes:

  • Earlier in the year, I was obsessing over my weekly mileage amount. I was tracking it in my weekly training posts and kept trying to see higher and higher numbers. When I redid my weekly training post style (whoa, back in April!) I dropped that number to try to quit fixating on it so much. I still was thinking about it though. Until… the streak. Now the focus has just been on getting a few miles in each day and I have completely stopped caring about (or adding up) weekly mileage. It would be nice if I could stay rid of the obsession post-streak, too. Do you tend to obsess about your weekly mileage number?

Overall notes:

  • Who is making a 2013 goal list for exercise/fitness? I may skip making an entire list this year, but keep the goal of trying to run more than the year before (wait, isn’t that counter-productive to the bullet above?!). So far this year, I’ve run 130 miles more than last year.

  1. I definitely focus on my weekly mileage but it’s an improvement from being fixated on getting a lot of miles in each day. I used to think running anything less than 6 miles wasn’t worth my time and focusing more on a weekly total has shown me that sometimes a 3 mile run is totally worthwhile. Ideally, I wouldn’t worry about either number… maybe someday!

I used to be that way too – anything less than 5 or 6 was not worth it! That is another thing doing this streak has helped me with… sometimes I just had to get in what I could! A lot of short runs this month!

My weekly mileage is paramount in my life! The “collapse point” looms large in my marathon training. I am trying to put more emphasis on better “quality workouts” with less weekly mileage, but it is a difficult transition. 🙂

  3. Anne says:

I never focus on my weekly mileage, but I generally only run a couple times each week. So for me, it’s more important to see how many days I’m working out each week, regardless of what I’m actually doing.

1,000 miles is so awesome! Congrats Riyanti and Kate! I think I have a few more years before I come even close to that mark!

    “Difficulty: Hard. Felt: Broken”

Strength class killed me this week, even if I didn’t feel it at the time. I so felt it later. Excited for our partner workouts!!

I rarely focus on weekly mileage unless I’m in the guts of marathon training. But I totally focus on monthly, and on milestones (with you!). Next year, I’m not focusing at all. I may not even run as much as I did this year, and I am 100% cool with that…

  5. abbi says:

I guess I kind of obsess over my weekly mileage because it does keep me going a bit. I track more monthly numbers though so that tends to be the one I really obsess over! Yay for the people who got to the 1000 mile mark!!

  6. Pam says:

Oh man, I’m a total numbers geek. I have to know how many and how fast. ALWAYS.

  7. Kelly says:

Great seeing you! I’m working on my 2013 plan now. I’m hoping for another big year!

  8. Maggie says:

I like to set goals at the beginning of the year. I just like proving that I can accomplish things. Maybe I purposely set goals that I know I can achieve … I also like giving myself focus for the year, instead of just aimlessly doing a bunch of stuff.

    • kilax says:

I think I am more of the aimless type – I am more about focusing on the fun right now and keeping my calendar somewhat open 😉

  9. Christina says:

I made a 2013 running goal/ personal goal list on my blog. I think making a fitness list is a goodI am becoming more addicted to running and I love the challenge! This upcoming year I want to run at least 1000 miles and run 13 races! Happy New Year 🙂

  10. Molly says:

I’m having a hard time getting my lazy buns off the couch. Maybe I should start tracking my weekly/monthly/yearly miles? Think it would help me get going?!?
Last week should be easy: 0 YIKES!!!!

  11. Kandi says:

I am so relaxed about my mileage it isn’t funny. I wish I cared just a little bit more… maybe next year. I am not setting any specific goals other than hoping to go sub-2 hours in the half marathon this year. So far I haven’t even registered for one so we’ll see. 😉

  12. Michele @ Running for Oreos says:

I’m a numbers nerd. Can’t help it. I try not to be obsessed, but then I obsess even more! I am going to make a list, but it’s not going to be too crazy…maybe.

  13. Emily says:

Wow, you ran when the temps were 0 or 1 degree!?!?!? You are hard core, way to go!!! I usually resign myself to the treadmill when the temps go below about 15 or 20 degress!
