Random Thoughts Thursday XXXIII

This Random Thoughts Thursday is more of a cheat post… it’s actually mostly in the style of “Articles I am reading this week“!

  • I’m back home after five days in NYC. I always have a hard time leaving, but this time was particularly hard, and I feel pretty weepy and sad. Do you ever get that feeling when you leave a place?

  • Have you ever had plantar fasciitis? Ugh, I have a few times, and in both feet (not a once though, thankfully). I thought this article (pdf here), saying there is no consensus on what causes it, was intriguing. Previously, it was believed that plantar fasciitis was chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia. “But when scientists actually biopsied fascia tissue from people with chronic plantar fasciitis, they did not find much if any inflammation.”  So now they actually think plantar fasciitis is caused by degeneration or weakening of the tissues, which means the “itis” should be dropped from the injury name, because the “itis” suffix means inflammation!  Interesting (maybe only to me…)!
  • Hee hee hee, I am not on Twitter, but I thought this article about “happiest and saddest states according to Twitter” (pdf here) was amusing. Researchers analyzed thousands of tweets based on positive and negative words to determine which states were the happiest and saddest. What cracked me up was what words were on the list as happy and sad – I kind of want to see the whole list! Some sad words are “mad, hate, no, boo, smoke and jail, as well as a colorful and thorough assortment of expletives” and some happy words are “LOL and haha, as well as good, nice, sleep and wine, and food or beach related words,” LOL, indeed. The article really focused on how states with more expletives in their tweets were “sadder.” Is your state more happy or more sad (click the link to see the graph)?
  • Here’s a fun work from home idea (pdf here) – a virtual assistant! “These skilled online helpers work from home or through outsourcing firms to handle a widening range of clients’ tasks, from scheduling a doctor’s appointment, managing meetings or cleaning out an email inbox, to finding the perfect hairdresser or pair of pants.” Do you think you could use a virtual assistant?
  • And now, for one more bagel picture! Ha ha ha. You guys may have guessed that I love eating all the foodz in NYC. I went a bit overboard this trip. I guess one good thing about being home is getting back to my normal eats! And not that I couldn’t eat my “normal eats” in NYC – I could! I just choose to indulge… a bit too much. Ha ha.

  1. You look so happy and like you’re enjoying yourself in that picture so I say, no regrets!

  2. kelsey says:

God I want that bagel so bad.

  3. I love NYC! Luckily, I am only a 2 hour drive 🙂

PF was my worst nightmare for months!!!!

  4. Kandi says:

Apparently I live in a sad state. Also, I find it interesting that the study equated profanity with sadness. Why can’t I just be really fucking happy?
I usually indulge in tasty eats when I’m on trips too. You never know when you’ll get back so you have to enjoy the things you love (to eat) while you are there!

  5. bobbi says:

    mmmmmm….bagels….

I am lucky enough to have never really suffered from pf. But it poked its head up enough to make me realize that mizunos were the wrong shoe for me. I’ve heard way too many horror stories to want to EVER deal with it 🙁

  6. Kristina says:

There are many times when I feel really sad about leaving – not because a trip/vacation is over but because I’m leaving good friends and/or family and it’s hard. So, I hear you on that.
I’m excited to read the PF article and see what it says, so thanks for the link!

  7. ahh yes PF is a bitch. Sorry you are sad to leave NY. 🙁

  8. Xaarlin says:

Love the photo of you and the bagel at the bottom- you look beautiful! New job: bagel model? Hehe

I got weepy and sad when I left Brasil after 8-9 days. I even cried at the airport.

Your trip looked amazing and you am keep the NYC posts coming. I’ve wanted to return for a while (its been 10 years) and just haven’t had time and my BFF just moved back to Florida (so much for free NYC accommodations!)

    • kilax says:

      Aww, thanks!

When I visited Spain in 2002 I cried so so so hard when I left. I did not want to leave that wonderful place!

AWW MAN! I am bummed you didn’t get to see her there!

  9. Pete B says:

I think I have an off and on case of plantar fasciitis and I think that relates to my ankle injury somehow. I will definitely read the article, sounds interesting. Anyway, I want that bagel! 🙂

  10. J says:

I get sad after events have happened that I have looked forward for a while. Like weddings or vacations or stuff like that. Sometimes even races. I just look forward them so much that I want the events to last forever!

  11. ChezJulie says:

I thought that study was really judgmental. A lot of people in urban areas use a lot of profanity, and it doesn’t mean they’re unhappy. Also the term “smoke” is cited as unhappy, but a lot of people I’m on Twitter with talk about smoking weed (not cigarettes) and it seems to make them happy. So “wine” mentioned by upper class white people in Napa is happy, but “smoke” mentioned by lower class people in Texas City is unhappy? Ridiculous. (Rant over).

  12. Beth says:

It’s so hard to say goodbye sometimes. When I’m with people I love and having a great time, I do get a little weepy when I have to leave. I cried a majority of the times when I had to leave my fiance when we were long distance. I’m glad you made it home safely, but I’m sorry your heart is hurting!

  13. diane says:

Dude. If I get a raise and/or promotion this month, I am TOTALLY hiring a virtual assistant.

  14. Erin says:

Were you particularly sad this time because you know you won’t be going back in the same context? Or because you won’t be eating as many bagels now that you’re home? 🙂

  15. gingerfoxxx says:

NOM!! I want that bagel!! I think it’s always hard when you have to leave a friend and you know you won’t get to see them as soon as you would like. That’s normal!

  16. Anne says:

I feel that way after pretty much every trip I go on, and always have. I had a hard time leaving Colorado last summer, because we spent our last night there with Bob’s cousin and his wife who are both super cool, but the 18 hour drive home made me so happy to get home – apparently, spending time in Nebraska will do that – and I’m always happy to get back to the dogs. But there’s even been times I’ve left Ohio after spending a weekend there, and have pulled over at some rest stop in Indiana to cry. Then I go to the outlet mall to make myself feel better 🙂

And now I feel bad that you’re sad, and came home to some selfish ass canceling your run today!

    • kilax says:

Happy to hear it is not just me feeling this way! Although it’s a crappy feeling.

SERIOUSLY. Do not feel bad about the reschedule. I am going to go our for a run now, will take a bath when I get back and then study study study. It will be a productive and relaxing night! It would’ve been fun to catch up, but I can skip the hour total driving 🙂

      • Anne says:

I know, I know, and it’s good for you to have a relaxing night after being gone! I’d feel worse if I wasn’t going to see you Saturday 🙂

And it does suck to feel that way. I could write a whole post on why it’s so hard for me to leave Ohio (actually, I think I may have when the blog was just starting out), but in general it’s hard to leave people and places you love. My mom is the exact same way too! She’ll come to visit me or my brother, and like an hour into the trip already be sad that she has to go home at some point in the future.

        • kilax says:

I hate it when I hit that point on a trip – the awful feeling of knowing there is xx amount of time left! That always happens to me!

  17. Susan says:

I cry almost every time I leave Chicago, which I usually take to mean that I should move back……but I think it’s just me missing my parents.

  18. Michele says:

PF does suck. I haven’t been “officially” diagnosed, but I believe I have it. Rolling my foot over a tennis ball helps. It comes and goes, but I’m always worried it’ll come back and put me out.

We have an awesome local bagel place here, and we hit it up every weekend. They make them fresh and they are even warm (not toasted) when we get them….yum!!

  19. Courtney says:

The picture of you and Luca is TOO CUTE!!

I hate it that you feel so sad about leaving NYC and that things are going to change but maybe you can be happy about coming to visit TX!! (And then of course be sad when it’s time to leave such an awesome place (and people), lol).

I get sad when my trip or visit is over (a longer trip/visit anyways- short ones can happen more frequently). When we went to Cheyenne last summer to visit David’s sister we were both kinda dreading going but we ended up having the best time and when we left I cried- a lot. I couldn’t even really tell his sister or her cat bye because I was so upset. In a way though, I think it’s good to feel that way- you know you are in a good special place and the people you are around are special to you too!

    =^..^=

    • kilax says:

Oh yeah, I will be very happy to visit TX 🙂 I can’t wait to check it out! And you are right that it is a blessing to have friends that make you feel this way! 🙂

  20. Meghan says:

I feel the same way about NYC, as you know! 🙂 And if you ever need a travel buddy back, let me know.

Love the bagel pics. You are the perfect model!

  21. martymankins says:

I get all weepy and sad when I leave a place I enjoy (like the 3 times I’ve been to NYC).
