Random Thoughts Thursday 42

  • As much as I love to smack talk Facebook and take breaks from it, gosh darnit, it’s pretty cool sometimes. New Neighborhood Runner Friend (NNRF?, eh, let’s just call her Jen) pointed out that we have two Facebook friends in common, and set up a dinner date for us with those two friends and another NNRF (also named Jen, ha ha ha). We went out for dinner on Tuesday night and stayed until the restaurant closed. You can probably guess that we were having a great time. I can’t wait to meet with those gals again and to see who else they introduce me to. It’s so fun to meet people in my neighborhood! It’s great to have friends so close by… and let’s be real – it makes me feel sane to know other people have the same neighborhood complaints as me (like… I should not have to wear these (below) to sleep through the night). Heh.

  • Do you think you would be up to going out to dinner with people you don’t know very well or have never met? How about joining a running relay team with people you have never met? Erin was telling me how one of their Ragnar team members was picked up off the Ragnar Facebook page, and I found that really interesting, as I assume not many people would want to do a relay with a group of strangers (which is kind of how I did it, as I joined Erin’s work running club’s team in 2011).
  • For someone who loves stability, I am unexplained annoyed by behavioral predictability… for certain traits, anyway. Yeah. This bullet is not meant to make sense.
  • A few times people have asked me what my “secret” is to not getting injured from running. Which is funny, because I had stress fractures in summer of 2009 and 2010. But! I was thinking about this last night when I drove home from my strength training class, and I was thinking about how beneficial regular strength training is. I think that, paired with the right shoes (and mileage on them) and not falling trap too running too much / too soon / too intense has kept me healthy. Oh. And rest days. What keeps you injury free?

  • The new Sierra Trail Mix Clif Bar is awesome-o. Has anyone else tried it?

  • I have started buying popcorn for Data. I am sure the vet would approve.

  • It makes me sad how I let technology piss me off. I couldn’t watch a short video on my phone on my train ride home yesterday, or load much of anything else… and it made me irrationally upset. Even though I know there are huge pockets on the train ride home that have very low signal. And today… trying to get these pictures in to this post. Ugh. Problems with my host and some MySQL blah blah blah. Just WORK, technology. I don’t want to figure you out.
  • I realized last week that I use the number sign in my Friday Question posts… but not in Random Thoughts Thursday or in my weekly training posts. Ahh! I hate inconsistency!

  1. I’m really sad that this post doesn’t include the scientific reasons behind the benefits of strength training. Hello, building up tendons and stuff. Or something.

I frequently give Denali popcorn. I make a pot, split it with Miles and D-boy gets whatever is leftover. I’m not sure it’s skinny but I pop it in coconut oil, which makes it instantly healthy. Obviously.

And a Thursday random: I look like I should be in Nantucket.

    • kilax says:

I should just start typing out what I read in the books to remember it better. But I am pretty sure I would still pick all the wrong stuff to remember.

LOL! Do we get to see your Nantucket outfit?

We share with Data when we have a bowl of homemade (off the stove, we don’t have a microwave) popcorn too, but we have to give him all the fluffy pieces… it’s a lot of work to bite them off and lay them out for him, ha ha ha.

Great tips on how to stay injury-free! I think that cross-training, strength-training, stretching, and gear are all SUPER important, and I’ve definitely fallen in to the trap of doing too much too soon. Sadly I’ve had to learn a lot of these lessons the HARD way. But you live and you learn, right?

I am a huge fan of Skinny Popcorn!!! I am sure Data will love it. =)

    • kilax says:

Yes! Cross-training! Sigh. I need to get on my bike more.

He liked the Skinny Pop! We are on to a new bag of something else already… lol.

  3. Declan says:

I’m totally up for meeting with strangers! On the rare occasions I get invited to an event, I usually only know the host so its almost always a stranger dinner for me!

Not sure if I have a method to keep injury free, but I try to work on my core, hips, and ankles at least a couple times a weak.

And I’m pretty sure Data is thinking, if there are skinny pops, can I have some fatty pops? I bet they are better!

  4. Melissa says:

I ran a 210 mile relay with almost all strangers this March (I only knew 2 people). I like to think I’m pretty go with the flow, so it worked for me. BUT…it’s an experience that I wish I had shared with friends or people I knew better b/c some of these people on our team were pretty nasty (“covertly” making fun of my friend b/c she was slower/overweight and mocking her behind her back) and it makes my heart hurt a little bit (a lot) just thinking about it/typing that. So I try to separate those feelings from my overall feeling about the relay. That being said, I would do another relay with strangers!

    • kilax says:

Ugh! That really sucks that the people were so mean. And especially about someone’s appearance/speed. You just don’t make fun of people for that. If someone is out there doing something, that is great.

      • Melissa says:

My thoughts exactly! And she was not the slowest…but you know how some people are just easy targets? Also, I have just learned that some people are really cruel just for the sake of it. (They are obviously projecting their own insecurities!)
But really, I didn’t mean to sound so negative…the relay experience/vibe/sleep deprivation/delirium…I would do it again in a heartbeat…just with different people 🙂

  5. Christina says:

I love how your technology rant paragraph is spaced closer than the other paragaraphs. 🙂 Hahaha. It knew you were talking about it!! AND it retaliated!!! 😉

Also, how do you wear carrots? Put them on a necklace? Put them between your toes? Stick them up your nose? 🙂

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! I do not get why sometimes the bulleted posts do that! I look at the HMTL and nothing is different… it is just retaliating!

The carrots go in your ears 😉

  6. Marcia says:

I had never met any of my Ragnar team last year either…wait I met Rachel and Kim for a sec at the WI half…but they were all awesome, as most bloggers are! : )

  7. Kandi says:

How cool that you are meeting new people in your neighborhood! Are they all runners too? (that would be cool).
I’d like to think I’d be ok doing a running relay with people I didn’t know very well. I mean, we’d have stuff to talk about since we have running in common. It just might be a smidge weird sharing a small space for that amount of time but I’m pretty laid back so I think I’d be ok with it (though nervous at first, I’m sure).
I get asked about my injury-free running and I don’t really have any answers but I’m thankful!
Too funny about the inconsistency using the # sign. I am a stickler for consistency at work so I completely understand!

  8. RunningLaur says:

My Ragnar team for this weekend has 2 other people I know, and that’s all! One of them is a friend I conned into it just a week ago – she doesn’t know anyone else on the team, and we’re both flying from PA for the race! Fingers crossed that it goes well….
Last time I did a Ragnar, it was a person that I did know causing most of the problems 😉

  9. Meghan says:

I don’t think I ever really paid attention to strength training seriously until my last injury. I realized that I actually love it so much that sometimes, I almost prefer it:)

  10. Anne says:

I’m usually cool with meeting new people, or eating out with people I don’t know very well. I seem to recall attending a holiday gathering last year where I knew ONE person, and I did okay 😉 That’s cool that you’re hanging out with your new neighborhood running friend, and your mutual friends. It’s always nice to have people you know in your neighborhood 🙂

I strength-train, cross-train (swimming and biking), take rest days (um, not so much lately), foam roll, use the stick, and ice problem areas to stay mostly injury free. I think I’m lucky that I started doing everything else BEFORE running, so things like strength and cross just fit easily into my routine.

  11. Michel says:

What keeps me injury free?? LOL. Currently my very low mileage. My PF in my right foot hurts like hell so I am avoiding running anything more than 2 miles. Strength training is making me feel better all around though.

  12. Brittani says:

Aww, how fun! New friends that you really click with are such an awesome treasure. I joined a Ragnar team this summer and it’s filled to the brim with strangers – the only person I know is my sister in law. THere’s no doubt we’ll all get to know each other pretty well by the end of that experience!

  13. Wow, Data gets the fancy popcorn!

  14. Beth says:

The Sierra Trail Mix Clif bars are so amazing! Love that flavor; definitely up there on my favorite Clif bar flavor list. I like the idea of spending time with people you don’t know so well. I know I really like to stay in my comfort zone, so every once in a while I’ll do something I know I’m uncomfortable with, like going to an event with a ton of people I don’t know, just to make myself more comfortable with being uncomfortable, if that makes sense. 🙂

    • kilax says:

Yeah, I get what you are saying! Having those moments in life makes life more interesting! 🙂

The Clif Bars where $5 for a box today at Target! Woo hoo!

  15. Losinglindy says:

I get frustrated by technology when it isn’t behaving as well. I am loving that Jen has a name!

  16. Bean says:

I get irrationally mad at technology not working too. Things should just work- all the time. I really need to take your advice on strength training. I am all talk and no action when it comes to that. Though I have gotten better at doing consistent core work and hip exercises….so baby steps I guess.

  17. martymankins says:

Our Rocko cat loves bread and Doritos… even the spicy ones. So it’s nice to see another cat like a human snack treat.

  18. Erin says:

I think the key to doing things with strangers is that the other people also have to be excited for what you’re doing. If they aren’t enthusiastic, looking forward to it, etc then you’re not going to enjoy it. Does that make sense?

Also, I’m excited that you’ve FINALLY met some people in your neighborhood!!

I suppose I do have a chronic injury, but I’ve managed to keep it at bay by doing what works for ME, not what some training plan says. Learning by trial and error is painful but I now know what I can and can’t do.

Those trail mix Clif bars look good! I almost bought them but raisins sometimes upset my stomach so I need to try one when I don’t have anything planned. TMI?

    • kilax says:

Oh yeah, no point in joining a group of strangers for an event if they are going to be whiny and unenthusiastic. That is what work is for. Ha! JK.

Do you mean running training plans? Because… yeah. Those are hard to follow if they are not custom. I think we learned that right away 😉

I already knew that about the raisins! And duh. never TMI. There actually aren’t that many in there. You might like it!

  19. jan says:

Yay for meeting new friends! I love meeting friends that have similar interests. I hope you get to join up again soon!

  20. First and foremost, earplugs = LOVE. Seriously, they must hold some magical powers because as soon as I stick them in I drift off to sleep. Second, I used to get very anxious when I would have to attend any sort of events (especially dinners) with people I didn’t know. Lately, I’ve been forcing myself to be more open to it because there will be many of these occasions in my life in the near future. I’ve actually found it to be very exciting and mildly life-changing (sounds silly but it’s true)!

  21. Michele says:

I had a stress fracture winter 2010, I was devastated to say the least! I was training for a marathon with Pam, it was her first!

I learned so much about myself and training from that damn stress fracture. I do think it is very beneficial to fit some strength training in there, as well as cross training too!

  22. Susan says:

EAR PLUGS! I wear them every. single. night. Everyone said I’d adjust to the street noise in NYC, but it’s way too much. And when I sleep during the day, I don’t even want to talk about it. haha. Glad to hear I’m not the only one…and you don’t live in the middle of Manhattan!
