10 Question Running Quiz!

Ha ha. I wanted to ask the first two questions, but that seemed a bit lame so I added 8 more.

Feel free to copy and paste your answers below or on your own blog… or to just mark this as read. Ha.

1. Who is your running shoe twin?

You know, who wears the same running shoes as you – whether it’s someone you know… or someone famous!

I know that Emily and Britt also wear the Asics GEL-Cumulus from time to time. Edited: And my bestie, Gina, wears them too! My newest (known) shoe twin is my mom’s mom. She tried on my running shoes at the end of June and said she thought they were really comfortable, so I ordered her the blue pair. She’s had bunion issues most of her life, and these are the first “regular” (non wide) shoes that feel great on her feet. She noticed that my pink pair have dark laces (and “hide the dirt better’), so I swapped her white laces out for blue ones. Hmm, what is next, a shoe charm?

2. When do you pause your watch on a run?

Lately I have seen friends pause their watch during a run if we take a walk break. This is interesting to me, because I don’t – I would rather track the mileage than worry about pace. But, I will pause my watch at an intersection, or at a bathroom break, or a water stop… which others have told me they don’t do. I NEVER pause it during a race.

3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”?

Shudder. Both. But the 5K “Marathon” is worse, to me.

4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length?

At least 7″. Lately, I am digging these (only, I buy them on Amazon, where they are $16 cheaper).

5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither?

Absolutely necessary AND not gross, to me! Ha! A friend of mine was running an ultra and someone he met on course was offended when he spit. Really? At an ultra trail race?

6. What is more exciting randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout?

Randomly seeing a friend.

7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)?

ALL THE STRESS FRACTURES!!!

8. What is your perfect running temp?

35°F, or lower.

9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own?

Make my own.

10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail?

Groomed trail. Never never never on the treadmill, for me. I ran on it once last year and once this year… that is enough.

The questions for you to copy and paste (if you want):

1. Who is your running shoe twin?
2. When do you pause your watch on a run?
3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”?

  1. Kiersten says:

    1. Who is your running shoe twin?
I don’t know her name- but a lady in my kickboxing class has my same colorful Asics Tri Noosas.

    2. When do you pause your watch on a run?
Yes if I am not moving forward at all. So at stop-lights or water breaks.

    3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”?
    Gah, both drive me nuts!

    4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length?
5-7 inches. I hate that most of the running skirts have a mini 3inch. That does nothing to stop the thigh chafe.

    5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither?
I don’t spit, but I totally snot rocket.

    6. What is more exciting randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout?
    Seeing a friend!

    7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)?
My current one! I don’t what it is yet. It’s been 4 days and I am going nuts!

    8. What is your perfect running temp?
    35.

    9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own?
I use a plan for marathon training, but my own the rest of the time.

    10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail? Groomed trail. Easy on the body but without the risk of rolling my ankle.

  2. Pete says:

    1. Who is your running shoe twin? I haven’t found anyone (that I recall) who wears the Frankenstein-esque BEAST by Brooks…

    2. When do you pause your watch on a run? Only when I stop for a stoplight.

    3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”? The latter. I freely admit that I jog at times…

    4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length? Longer than the shorts I purchased when I last shopped online…

    5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither? Necessary.

    6. What is more exciting randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout? First hasn’t happened to me yet, so the second.

    7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)? Almost broke my ankle practicing for the steeplchase in college. Was in a boot for six weeks. Got a bloody nose out of that deal too…

    8. What is your perfect running temp? 98.6 😛

    9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own? Yes.

    10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail? Road.

    • kilax says:

Steven wore those shoes on the treadmill for one or two runs then took them back! He thought they were too heavy for him. Do you like them? 🙂

Tell me, what do you define as jogging, since you say you do it? 🙂

WHAT? You haven’t run in to a random person yet in GRAYSLAKE?! Surprised…

      98.6. You dork! 😛

  3. Dawn Rothermel says:

Oh goody….I love this post: 1) Bobbi – she has the trail version. 2) ditto your comments 3) i agree. both. 4) i’m working my way up in the world. previously was capris. now i’m to knee length. and ideally would like to find a pair at 8 inch inseam. my bigger requirement than shorts length is % of spandex. I like those babies T.I.G.H.T.! 5) never learned how to spit. snot rockets on the other hand…well, a requirement! 6) i run solo a majority of the time so i’d say goal pace/workout. 7) piriformis muscle. took me out for 6 weeks. 8) between 15 and 50 degrees. 9) plan if i’m training for a half. otherwise, on my own. 10) dreadmill for tempo runs. high school track for intervals. otherwise road or groomed trail. i don’t know what a technical trail is…..

    • kilax says:

Yay! I am happy you like it!

Bobbi wears the Adrenaline for street shoes too! 🙂

I wonder if you would like some of the shorts I have tried. I like these Xersion “bike shorts” from JCP, but this year they have a stupid colored strip down the side which makes my thigh look a lot larger than it is!

Stupid piriformis. UGH! What did you do to recover?

Technical trail – think roots, streams, rocks, bumpy, etc. 😉

  4. Gina says:

    We’re shoe twins!

    • kilax says:

OMG! How the eff could I forget to post that?! I feel like such an arse 🙁 I edited the post!!! Are you still my bestie? 🙂

  5. Rachel says:

ooh I was going to answer in the comments, but I think I’ll just do a post. 🙂

Thanks for the shorts tip too, I need some new ones…mine are getting janky.

  6. Michele says:

I’m going to do a post! I needed something to write about…

  7. Jobi says:

    1. Who is your running shoe twin?
Not sure, I’ve just purchased a pair of Brooks Ghost for the first time and I haven’t noticed anyone else’s shoes lately.
    2. When do you pause your watch on a run?
waiting for walk signal, bathroom break, etc.
    3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”?
Gosh, I do plenty of what I think is jogging (i.e. 9:30-10:00mm) but I think the marathon comment might just rub me the wrong way cuz I’m a word nerd.
    4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length?
Most of my shorts are a 3″ inseam but I really like long shorts (9-10″ inseam)
    5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither?
I really don’t do that unless I inhale a bug. Then it’s coughing and spitting galore. Can’t/won’t master the snot rocket. I just can’t bring myself to do it.
    6. What is more exciting: randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout?
    It’s a toss-up. Depends on who the friend is… 🙂
    7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)?
Plantar Fasciitis that had me sidelined for 2 years. Ridiculous.
    8. What is your perfect running temp?
55-60 degrees but I really try to make the best of whatever temp there is. Running on a really hot evening can be very cleansing.
    9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own?
For races I prefer to find a Higdon plan but I mostly run for lifestyle so I do my own thing.
    10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail?
I hate the monotony of a dreadmill but love the fact that I have one for whenever I need it; I’d say trail of any kind is my favorite. Roads hurt my knees and hips after a while.

    • kilax says:

Ahh! That is interesting that jogging is based on pace, for you. I consider it running when it’s not walking.

Ha ha ha! Why are you opposed to the snot rocket? 🙂

I am so happy you are finally done with that PF BS 😉

  8. Twins! Love that cumulus for recovery days. Like little pillows for me feet.

  9. Declan says:

    1. Who is your running shoe twin? No clue! I haven’t looked it up. I’ve seen my bright green neon shoes once on the lakefront by a guy walking.
    2. When do you pause your watch on a run? every time I stop for more than 3 seconds cause ya know… the internet will judge my time
    3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”? 5k a marathon!
    4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length? umm shorter over longer for sure! Guys don’t measure duh
    5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither? Necessary! I can’t snot rocket, so it is a must. Plus itis great when you are sick
    6. What is more exciting randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout? Friend!!
    7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)? This hamstring injury is a pain since it lingers and causes other issues. My last calf injury happened mid winter and didn’t bother me much.
    8. What is your perfect running temp? 50
    9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own? Follow! I don’t know enough to BS my own fitness yes
    10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail? whatever is available… as long as it is outside. I’m a cheap run

    • kilax says:

That is interesting you like shorter over longer. I notice the guys in my club wearing longer shorts.

I bet you know enough to BS your own fitness 😉

  10. Meghan says:

I can’t believe we never discussed stress fractures! I’ve had two – ankle and shin. UGH. UGH. UGH.

And, I never told her this, but I am pretty sure Maggie is my shoe twin. I thought I caught a glimpse of my shoes in one of her pics! Ha!

  11. Michel says:

    1. Who is your running shoe twin?
Not sure I wear Brooks Ariel.

    2. When do you pause your watch on a run?
I hate hitting pause because I always forget to turn it back on!!

    3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”?
I am always shocked that people don’t know the length of a marathon. Then I get pissy if people are like why is it Kilometers? because you know americans hate all things metric. snort.

    4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length?
capris. I can’t wear shorts. I think the longest is 9inch

    5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither?
    sometimes necessary

    6. What is more exciting randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout?
seeing a friend. lol. I was running in an area I never run in and my bf was driving back from the other side of town and she honked at me and I was like who the heck? lol

    7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)?
    stupid PF.

    8. What is your perfect running temp?
    colder 30’s -40’s

    9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own?
    eh….lately, no running.

    10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail?
don’t mind treadmill, road is good for me and darn I forgot that we have a 5k trail race in October. lol I should get going!

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha. I have never heard someone ask why it’s kilometers. I wonder if their mind would be blown if they knew it was meters, on the track.

Aww, that is fun you saw your bf on a run!

Ooo, which trail race are you doing? That Muddy Monk one?

  12. Shoe charms are definitely the next big thing in running

  13. Kandi says:

    1. Who is your running shoe twin?
    No idea.
    2. When do you pause your watch on a run?
I don’t pause my watch too often but I have the few times I’ve stopped to use the bathroom on a run and sometimes at stop lights if it looks like I have to wait a while. I stopped wearing my watch on runs in downtown DC because it took forever to find satellites and there are a lot of lights and I already know the distance of our typical routes.
    3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”?
I actually wouldn’t care as much if someone called me a jogger. Calling a 5k (or any distance that isn’t 26.2) a marathon is just ignorant though so I would probably tell the person the difference.
    4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length?
I honestly don’t know but my shorts have to be long enough that my thighs don’t rub together.
    5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither?
I don’t do it but I don’t think it’s that gross so long as the person is aware of their surroundings and not spitting on others.
    6. What is more exciting randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout?
    Seeing a friend randomly.
    7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)?
I injured my hip a bunch of years ago and had to stop running for about a month. Didn’t see a doctor or anything but taking time off fixed the issue.
    8. What is your perfect running temp?
I like 40s for races and 50s/60s with low humidity for training.
    9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own?
I make my own. I used to kind of follow a plan for long runs but have trained for enough races now that I just plan my own long runs and the other runs I do during the week are not really planned out ahead of time.
    10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail?
I like it all, though just tolerate the treadmill. It depends on what I’m training for though.

  14. J says:

    Fun!
    1. My shoe twin is my best running buddy. When we started running together I think she was wearing some other shoe but then I started wearing brooks and she started wearing them too and we have had the same shoe ever since.
    2. I pause when I stop running. To wait for a stop light or traffic.
    3. I don’t really care – I just know people don’t know much about running.
4.I love the nike tempo shorts – I finally started fitting into them once I lost the bulk of my basketball weight about a year after college and they are pretty comfy. I don’t the inseam.
5.spitting = sometimes necessary. Snot rockets in the winter = necessary.
6.Hitting a goal on a run is the most fun cause i never see people out when i run. Or if I see people its cause im running with them.
    7. Worst running injury is spraining my ankle. It hurts like a mother. Also having weak hips so I have knee pain. So annoying.
    8. Perfect running temp is 50-60F. Perfect racing temp is like 40-50. NO WIND!
9.I follow a plan from my running club/coach. I change thing as needed but its a general thing to follow.
    10. I prefer the roads. I like trails but they cause me to focus so much on not falling that its annoying. I do love the track tho for workouts!

  15. Kristina says:

    This is so awesome!
Maybe I’ll do a post since running and I, sadly, only see each other on occasion these days (the heat, school schedule, my laziness…) and I should get my act together!

  16. Anne says:

    Just posted my responses 🙂

  17. I love these! I might try to answer them in a blog post sometime! And who calls 5ks marathons?! UGGGH my eye is twitching just thinking about it! Silly silly….

  18. Xaarlin says:

    1. Who is your running shoe twin?
Brooks cadence- Britt, Saucony A5 Jenny, newton distance no one!?

    2. When do you pause your watch on a run?
    Only at water fountains.

    3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”?
Both are like nails on a chalk board. But now that I’m approaching “race weight” everyone thinks I’m a totes serious badass runner. Hehe

    4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length?
I’m in love with my 2″ Nike pro shorts. Suns out, buns out!

    5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither?
    I rarely spit. But necessary.

    6. What is more exciting randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout?
Both. Nothing gets my juices flowing than a solid side 5 from a random friend sighting on the path- which then contributes to hitting my goal paces. Both are equally important.

    7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)?
2 weeks before Miami marathon strained hip flexor. Had pain for almost a year. And then that fu&$%#* ankle injury last year 2 weeks before go valley.

    8. What is your perfect running temp?
    45 degrees, light wind.

    9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own?
When I’m not training with Coach B, I make my own.

    10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail?
Treadmill and groomed trail minus douchbag cyclists and rude running groups who won’t move the eff to the side so I can pass them.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha. Suns out, buns out, haven’t heard that!

I was going to ask what people thought of cyclists, but left that off of here! Ha!

  19. Erin says:

    1. Who is your running shoe twin?

I think Valerie has the same kind of shoes, but maybe not the bright pink ones. I have seen other people wearing them while I’m running, though.

    2. When do you pause your watch on a run?
Sort of depends. If I’m trying to hit a certain pace on a run I will pause my watch if I know I’m going to be stuck at a traffic light for awhile. Otherwise I don’t bother. If I’m stopping for more than a few seconds (bathroom break, longer water break) I’ll stop it then, too. But usually I don’t stop it for every intersection or I would never have an idea of my actual pace!

    3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”?

Definitely calling a 5K a marathon. Drives me bonkers!

    4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length?

4″ used to be my go-to but apparently they stopped making those. I just bought some 6″ ones at Road Runner Sports and they may be my new favorites.

    5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither?

I don’t do either. Never had the need to spit. I don’t care if people do it, just make sure there’s no one behind you whose going to have to run through your loogie!

    6. What is more exciting randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout?

I love when I see someone I know when I’m out running because it makes me feel like I really “belong” in the city. If that makes sense.

    7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)?

I’m hesitant to call my left leg issue a running injury because I don’t know for sure it was caused by running. But my right knee pain that showed up a few weeks before the 2010 Chicago Marathon hurt like hell while I was running so I’d say that was the worst.

    8. What is your perfect running temp?

40s, low humidity and overcast for races please! For a training run I prefer in the 50s with some sun.

    9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own?

The past few times I’ve trained I’ve taken training plans and adjusted them to my own needs.

    10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail?

Running on a groomed trail is always more visually stimulating than running on the road. So I’ll definitely go with that when it’s an option!

    • kilax says:

I’d like to hear more about your answer to #6! 🙂

I wonder why they stopped making the 4″ ones! 6″ seems too long for you! 😛

Oh! And my dad is your shoe twin too!

  20. bobbi says:

    1. Who is your running shoe twin? I know lots of runners in the Brooks Adrenaline. But now I know one more (hi Dawn!)
    2. When do you pause your watch on a run? When I stop moving. But not for walk breaks unless I’m done running for the day and am walking it in.
    3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”? Yes. Although to be honest, jogger doesn’t bother me unless it’s said derisively. (did I spell that correctly Kim’s dad? too lazy to check…)
    4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length? I think most of my skirts are 5″ and I just bought my first pair of shorts so I’ll let you know…
    5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither? n/a – I don’t spit or snot rocket when I run. But it doesn’t bother me when others do.
    6. What is more exciting randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout? FRIEND!
    7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)? other than a brief bout of runners knee corrected by some alignment and strength, I have not had a running injury. ever. SO, now I’m off to get a stress fracture 🙂
    8. What is your perfect running temp? 35
    9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own? yes. but even when I follow a plan, it’s never to the letter – I’m often switching up the order of the runs there. I never run it as written.
    10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail? Trail – either kind. I’m still proud of my “never ever run on a treadmill” status.

    • kilax says:

Hmm, I will let my dad answer. DAD! ARE YOU READING MY BLOG? I NEED ATTENTION!!!!

Ooo! Where did you get the shorts?

      No stress fracture for you!

Stay off the treadmill for life!

    • dad says:

Yes, spelled and used correctly. And yes, I had to look that up.

  21. […] courtesy of Kim – I saw it on Margaret’s […]

  22. Good questionnaire! I love the Nike Pro 5″ inseam shorts. The 3″ are like underwear. I pause my watch at a water stop, intersections, etc, but I refuse to walk when I’m running. I’ll stop to take a water break but won’t move a step during that break. And I think it bothers me more to hear people say jogging. I hate that word. My worst injury is my stress fracture for sure. I’m going to have to go read about yours now. And spitting is definitely necessary.

  23. Mica says:

I’m so behind on your blog, and I barely run these days, but I still wanted to fill this out:

    1. Who is your running shoe twin?
Harrison and I both wear Ravennas now. Awww….

    2. When do you pause your watch on a run?
When I’m stopped at all! But if I’m specifically focusing on speed for an upcoming race, I’ll leave it running sometimes to simulate finish time a little more accurately.

    3. What is worse – being called a jogger or hearing someone call a 5K a “marathon”?
The latter. I’m pretty sure I am a jogger after all…

    4. What is your preferred running shorts inseam length?
Long enough that my lady bits don’t show? Well, probably a little longer than that….

    5. Spitting when you run – gross or necessary or neither?
Necessary, but gross when the string swings back and hits me.

    6. What is more exciting randomly seeing a friend on a run, or hitting a goal pace/workout?
The latter. If I see a friend, I might feel guilty if I stopped and talked to him/her and delayed his/her workout. And if I didn’t stop for that reason, I’d worry that s/he would think I was rude. Too much drama.

    7. What has been your worst running injury (something that happened on a run or something caused by running)?
This chronic hip pain is pretty annoying. Boooo.

    8. What is your perfect running temp?
    Hmm…50’s with clouds.

    9. Do you follow a running plan or make your own?
I make my own plan based on an existing one. I do what I want (sort of).

    10. Preference – treadmill, road, groomed trail, or technical trail?
Groomed trail…Ha, “Happy trail”! 😀 (No, ew!)

    • kilax says:

Ha ha, so tell me what a jogger is, since you think you are one! 🙂

You are totally overthinking the seeing a friend on a run thing! LOL! 😛 Or wait… am I the only one looking for ANY excuse to stop? 😉
