Friday Question 241

By , September 20, 2013 6:30 am

How old were you when you took your first commercial flight? To where did you fly?

I thought to ask this, because my older brother went on his first (I think) commercial flight, for work, this week! Exciting!

I asked “commercial,” because I actually rode in a small, private plane in middle school, before I went on a commercial flight. I liked being in that little plane so much I thought I wanted to be a pilot when I grew up!

Anyways.

I took my first commercial flight when I was 17, to España with my dad (er, and my Spanish professor and some other students). I remember being super excited for my first flight (and trip to Europe!) so of course, it’s documented.

Rachel answered correctly – Detroit!

Ha ha ha.

I have no idea how many flights I have been on since then, but it’s usually been a few a year to visit family and friends!

  1. Anne says:

Is that O’Hare? Kind of reminds me of that glowing tunnel you take to get in/out.

I think my first flight was when I was just 2 or 3, and we went to Myrtle Beach, SC. Or Florida. But the first flight I remember was going to Disney World in Florida for Christmas when I was 8. I thought it was pretty cool then, but I actually don’t really like flying now, and typically only fly like once a year (sometimes not even that often!).

    • kilax says:

      Close! But not O’Hare! 🙂

Why don’t you like flying? Because it’s a total pita?! Ha ha. The hassle of it makes me anxious, and how early you have to get there, etc. But I still think it’s amazing it’s even possible!

  2. J says:

I took a flight to South Carolina when I was 9 months I think. Then I didn’t get on a plane until I was 10 when we went to disney world. Since then I’ve flown a lot more. Cali, Florida, Puerto Rico, but never to Europe. Hopefully someday.

  3. Rachel says:

    Isn’t that Detriot?

I was 20 on my first flight. And I flew to Germany! When I go, I go big!!!

  4. Kiersten says:

I don’t remember it because I was 9 months old. My parents took me with them to a wedding in California. That was when they discovered my ear problems because I screamed the whole way. We usually took 1 flying trip a year growing up, and then I flew almost every week for 4 years for work. So I know that airport is O’Hare. I sprinted many times through that tunnel

  5. Damn, I knew that was Detroit right away!!!

My first commercial flight was when I was 3 months old or so to visit family in Arizona! I also flew once when I was 12 alone to go back and my parents lied about my age because I was too independent for under 14 flight attendant watch. Lol

  6. Oh man! I knew it was Detroit too! That tunnel is still there and so ridiculous. Ha. I flew when I was really little (like a baby) because my mom’s parents had retired in Texas and my parents brought me down to visit.

  7. Amy says:

I was another one of those kids who doesn’t remember their first flight because I was a baby and I think it was for a wedding. All three of my kids flew early and often – they are always surprised when they find out kids they know have never flown. It’s not that unusual here – one of my best friends is 48 and has never flown. I guess because the country is smaller and you can take a train.

    • kilax says:

Ahh, interesting! I would think everyone would be flying the cheap airlines (like RyanAir) all over. But, yeah, the train system there is so nice!

  8. Jen2 says:

I was three and it’s one of my earliest memories. My Mom, Grandma and sister flew to AZ to visit family.

  9. Detroit!

First flight was en route to Israel.

  10. I was maybe 13 on my first commercial flight. We had moved from LA to Spokane a couple years prior and were flying back for a visit. I vividly remember it. We were on a Southwest flight and the plane had a group of 6 seats near the front that faced each other. There are 6 people in my family so it worked out perfectly for us.

  11. I was 12 (give or take a year) we went to Florida and did the ocean and Disney. I can’t really remember which airport we flew into or what other cities we went to.

  12. Heather says:

I know it was to Florida but I have no idea how old I was. Maybe 12? I have such a bad memory…………lol.

  13. Erin says:

Apparently my mom took to me Maine via airplane when I was a little tiny baby. And then we flew to Hawaii when I was 3 or 4. After that…I can’t recall! I do know that my cousin and I used to fly to various places to visit our aunt so I was definitely used to flying by the time I was in junior high and early high school.

Now with family and friends spread out everywhere and going to conferences for work I fly at least once a year it seems.

  14. Mica says:

Hmmm…I guess my first flight was when I was three months old when I came from Korea!

After that, I think it was when I was about six or seven. I went to a cousin’s wedding in Texas. Even then, I was afraid of flying. Sigh.

  15. Losinglindy says:

my first one when I packed two suitcases and moved to NJ. It was a one way ticket.

  16. martymankins says:

Great question… I took my first commercial flight in September 1972. My mom scrimped and saved for us to fly (via Eastern Airlines, which no longer exists) to Winston-Salem, NC to see a lot of my relatives on my dad’s side of the family. It was a trip I will always treasure. I got sick on the flight because I used to get anxious and excited before going places as a kid. We also went to Washington DC, by Greyhound bus, which is also a great set of memories that are fading, yet still there.

As for my daughter, her first commercial flight was at the age of 9 months in 1992 (almost 20 years later than my first). How times change.

  17. Declan says:

I don’t remember my first few flights which were to Colombia, but I loved to travel, so much my initial intention in life was to do international business and just travel non stop!

  18. Nina says:

I was 10 months old and went to Paraguay with my mom and brother (maybe my dad but I don’t think he went with for whatever reason).

Apparently I was a perfect baby the whole way and slept soundly and was quiet when I was awake.

  19. Kandi says:

My first flight was when I was 22 on my way to the Bahamas with my BFF after we graduated college! Her graduation gift from her grandparents was a week at their time share and she really had to twist my arm to get me to go with her! Ha!

  20. My first airplane flight was long before I can even remember. I grew up flying, because we lived in the Midwest and the rest of our family was on the East Coast. Ironically, that’s how Gavin’s life has started, too. His first flight was when he was 9 months old and his first flight to Europe will be days before he turns 3!
