10 Confessions

By , March 17, 2014 6:23 am

Let’s make Monday a bit more fun and do some confessions!

Confession #1 – some of these are things you already know (ha ha, I didn’t realize how many until I found old blog posts talking about many of them)! This is a cop out list post in disguise, as I try to get back to posting this week. So the confession here is that I enjoy posting most days of the week, apparently, even if it’s stuff I’ve talked about before.

Confession #2 – it completely cracks me up that some of the “big name” bloggers are “discovering” ALDI now (as ALDI paid them to). I have been shopping there since I was a little kid!

Photo from this post, hence the text

Confession #3 –  for some reason, two people could have the same behavior or characteristic I don’t care for, but I’ll let it bother me for one person, and completely not care for the other. This isn’t fair. But I doubt I’ll change.

Confession #4 – I’m not graceful at all, with my body. I’m constantly bumping in to things. I missed the last step of the stairs last week and fell on to the kitchen floor. I cut my hand by taking my coat off on Saturday, because I hit the thermostat with my knuckle as I pulled my arm out of the coat sleeve. I can’t dance (but that doesn’t stop me in ANY way, ha ha ha).

Confession #5 –  when I read your weekly training post recaps I typically (not always) skim all the pace/distance/etc. details and just focus on the big picture take-aways. I imagine people do the same who read mine? I doubt anyone cares what pace I run or how much I do in a week. I make all that stuff in small print for a reason – it’s just a reference for me.

Confession #6 –  I feel like I have just the right amount of friends, and the idea of “making room” for more friends in my life overwhelms me. But at the same time… it excites me, because I love meeting new people and discovering who they are.

Confession #7 –  it really bugs me when people imply I must not do anything at work, since I work from home most of the time. As many other people who work from home will tell you… that is usually when you can focus and get most of your work done!

Confession #8 – however, working from home has made me want to go to the city even less than when I first started working in Chicago. Chicago’s just not my city. I mean, for the obvious reason that I don’t live there, but I also have never found a love for it that I have for other cities.

Confession #9 –  one of my biggest pet peeves is when people don’t say please or thank you. Basically, when people seem to be lacking common courtesy.

Confession #10 –  I’ve been completely ignoring sad/effed up news stories lately. I Just don’t want to read that right now. Blinders, on.

Gosh. It was hard to stop at 10. Ha ha! I have at least five things that didn’t make the cut.

What’s on your confession list?

People imply you get nothing done when you work from home? Having done both and my husband has also done both – home is a way more productive spot. Offices have coworkers who are – well meaning but – distracting! I’m going to pawn that one off on jealousy, because realistically if working from home didn’t get the work done employers wouldn’t pay.

And I am SO with you on Chicago. Too crowded and too much for me. I liked Atlanta a lot when I lived out in Georgia, and DC was cool, but I don’t think I’ve been to many other “big” cities. I’m just not a city girl, I don’t think.

    • kilax says:

Some do! And I think you are right about what the cause of it is. I should note, I was in the office two days last week and able to get things done – because nearly everyone else was working from home and it was a ghost town. Ha ha. I could talk about this for days (since it’s what I do for work), but we have an open floor plan and it’s very noisy, so office time is almost all about collaboration now.

I am not a city girl, either. 🙂 I love NYC and used to think I would love to live there, but when I had to go there for work for a few days, I realized that took all the love out of it. So, I am huge on visiting large cities.

  2. I love the wedding photo of you!! Seeing you most of the time in running clothes, I love the inside photo of you cutting a rug!!

I have a love/hate relationship with Chicago. I like working downtown and having access to the restaurants, the fashion trends, the bakeries… But I dislike the traffic, I dislike the distance, I dislike the expense and hassle of parking (and being married to the metra schedule). I’m currently trying to work with my job to figure out a work from home schedule because the commute 5 days a week is getting to me…

Sorry I haven’t commented in so long!

    • kilax says:

Ha! Thanks! I didn’t know that phrase and had to look it up. My mind went elsewhere. LOL.

I wish the Metra schedule were better for the far out burbs on week days AND weekends. That would make it so much better. Because I prefer the train! I hope you get to work from home! Because you guys aren’t moving any time soon… right?

      No worries! 🙂

  3. bobbi says:

I am avoiding the news lately too. We were at the party Saturday night and one of the (hilarious) ladies at our table brought up the missing jet, and John yelled at her (jokingly). “Way to bring the mood down, Mary!” It was funny 🙂

    • kilax says:

LOL! That is funny. I know about all the sick crap that people do. I don’t want to read about it right now. It makes the funk I have been in, worse!

  4. Confession: I totes texted/messaged Kim, v. Goshen, to rant about the Aldi bloggers. I am a huge Aldi fan, and it’s about the only way to keep my budget in check. It agitated me how “novel” it was.

Confession: I also am bad about the news, which is not good to admit since I work at the paper. But I’m in features and boss people around and edit stories and write about food. Planes, schmanes.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha. That is what bugged me, too. It really made me think – if these ladies don’t know about ALDI, what else don’t they know? (and why the heck are people so in to their blogs? ha ha).

It sounds like you are in the fun part of the news! 🙂 I mean, invite to meet Tartar Sauce?!?!

  5. Valerie says:

1- I bet you are graceful! Maybe instead of ballet graceful, you are a different kind of graceful? There is a LivingSocial out there for some classes at a place in Gurnee- they’ve got Zumba, Hip Hop and pole dancing…we would totally rock that! 😉
2- When I worked from home, I was WAY more effcient because I wasn’t being interrupted. And I found that I spent my commute time working too…(it’s weird, almost like you have to “prove” to the in-office workers that you are emailing, etc.)

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha. Thanks for a vote of confidence! 🙂 Those classes sound fun! Are you going to check them out?

YES to efficiency. I refuse to work my commute time (that would be 3 more hours!) and after hours, too. I feel like schedule should be respected no matter where you work from, unless it’s a special circumstance 😉

  6. Maggie says:

Oh man, I haven’t read these bloggers who are discovering ALDI, but that’s kind of hilarious. ALDI has come a long way though. Or, maybe when I was a kid my mom just didn’t buy any of the cool stuff from ALDI.

    • kilax says:

That is a really good point – they have changed some things that may entice a different crowd (organic food, gluten free, crisper marketing and design). Ha! The cool stuff to me as a kid was the BBQ chips and the vanilla sugar wafers! They still sell those! 🙂

  7. Xaarlin says:

#2- why I pretty much roll my eyes at every blog post now. People “discovering” the latest greatest thing (after being paid) which coincidentally has been around forever. Smh.

#4- I love that photo of you. Yeah. I feel ya on the not graceful part. (And I even took ballet for like half my life!) I also find ways to unintentionally hurt myself. Hello smashing my knee in the EL turn style. That list could go on and on.

#5- can’t agree more. I only put pace info for “key workouts” and not all the specific deets because I post all that crap on daily mile anyways. And the blog is more of a reference for me also. (That’s what I’ve decided it needs to be…) I’m interested in some people’s paces and like to see that stuff occasionally… But I would rather hear big picture too.

Hmm some of my confessions,.. Mainly I hate talking about my upcoming wedding. I’ve kept it on the DL not because I don’t want people to know, but the people I want/need to know have already been told. When more people find out I’ll have to go through the awkward exchange {again and again} of “why no ceremony? Don’t you want that?” NO I DONT. And of course the reasons why… Smh.

Other confession- I’ve pretty much stopped reading blogs. What was once entertaining, has become triggering and rage inducing… I’m giving up annoying people on social media for lent. Ha.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! It would be one thing if they weren’t paid to discover it. At least they told us?

Oh man. I hope you don’t get all those dumb questions about the wedding. Everyone wants something different! Of course, people are naturally curious. As a question asker, sigh, I can’t deny that 😉

I think you will find you don’t want them back after Lent 😉

  8. Anne says:

Phew, I was worried you were going to post a list post that wasn’t 10 items. I’d probably just mark that as read and move on.

I’m with you on the work from home thing! In fact, the whole reason that I’m even allowed to do it is because I’m more available and productive when I’m NOT commuting. I work 9-5 in the office, but when I’m home my hours are more like 7:30 – ?, which as of late has been 7pm or later.

I don’t know a lot of people who live in the ‘burbs and actually like Chicago/city living. I love the city, but rarely do anything downtown these days, so it’s more that I love my part of town and all the fun things I’m able to do around here. I’ve also had a lot of great memories and formative, life-changing experiences here, so Chicago will always be “my” city. But eh, it’s not for everyone.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha ha. It would just be so wrong to stop at 9. Or go to 11. 😉

So if you wanted to work normal hours at home, you would not be allowed? I think that is a bit backward! I hope you are almost done with 12 hour days!

Thanks for understanding that! I bet it is because I go to the Loop for work, and eh. Not much happening there!

      • Anne says:

Oh no, I’m not forced to work certain hours or anything like that. I guess what I meant was when I work from home I tend to be online a lot longer than if I was in the office. I’ll log on at 7:30, which is when I’d typically leave to go to the office. I log off when I’m done working, which ideally would be around 4 or 5 (keeping in mind I usually take an hour lunch break to go to the gym/run), but later if I have more to get done.

Yeah, the Loop/downtown and the rest of the city are two different things in my mind. Downtown, to me, is where people work and tourists hang out, but the neighborhoods are just full of cool places and fun stuff to do.

  9. Marcia says:

My confession is I really couldn’t care less what people’s training week looks like or what pace they run or race at. Ergo, I often (always) neglect to post those things about myself. But then people will ask me to.

    • kilax says:

I guess people may want to see that stuff if they are looking for training plan ideas? But then they should get a coach. So you should tell them you’ll coach them, lol!

And now that I think about it, I am surprised when people post a recap and don’t mention their finish time (I don’t need mile splits zzzzzzzzzz) but I have done that before, so, whatevs!

  10. Heather says:

I definitely push the limits of “business casual”. My work only employs 10 people and I’m always the nicest dressed person in the office, regardless if I’m wearing dress pants or courds, or tights! So, more times than not, I’m wearing tights and a long shirt. 🙂
Great post! (and, haha, about Aldi!)

  11. Erin says:

I’ve still admittedly never been to Aldi. Growing up my mom didn’t go there (it was in the “bad” part of town) so I never thought it was a viable option. Sounds like they are trying to appeal to a different customer base now!

So, I suppose that was a confession of sorts 🙂

What do you think it is about New York that makes you love visiting it more than, say, spending a day with people in Chicago? Is it because New York (or at least Manhattan) is more compact?

    • kilax says:

The compactness of NYC helps, and I think the public transportation is better, but really, NYC has more of an electric feel to me. I know it goes from neighborhood to neighborhood in the same sense that Chicago does, but NYC feels much more alive.

And spending a day in Chicago usually feels like a hassle and makes me wonder when I will get home, since I live close. LOL. If I lived in a suburb of NYC, I am sure it would be the same way.

  12. Chaitali says:

I love the wedding photo 🙂 I’m with you on the friends thing. I feel like I have the right amount of friends but sometimes I do wish for more time to have meaningful interactions with those friends!

  13. If you’re avoiding sad news stories, then what do you read??? NCAA basketball recaps, lol.

It also bugs me when people assume that when I work at home, I’m sitting around eating chips. I mean, sometimes I am, but I actually have to work! Big Brother mandates that every minute in my day is accounted for… aka I have a status my computer has to be in when I need to poop.

    • kilax says:

Ha! I mostly skim human interest, health, design and technology stuff. 😉

Oh gosh. It’s funny you say that about the poop status, well, for two reasons. 1 – it seems people usually call when I get up to go to the bathroom and 2 – I feel much more free to roam around in the office. At home I am chained to my desk!

  14. Right there with you on ALDI. We’re like grocery shopping hipsters – we’ve been shopping there since before it was cool! Why didn’t they pick us? We’re already talking about it, and we’re local.

    • kilax says:

Lol! Grocery shopping hipsters!!! They didn’t pick us because we don’t have the blog stats they want! I wouldn’t want to be forced to write some fakey post about ALDI, but it would be neat to see their HQ! I don’t even need to do their taste test. I know their food is good 🙂

  15. Meghan says:

Wait, people are being paid to discover ALDI? STOP. I love Aldi – did you know that the owner’s brother owns Trader Joes???

And let’s discuss gracefulness. I have absolutely ZERO. I cannot tell you how many times I have fallen down the stairs in our new house…

    • kilax says:

Yes! Those big “healthy living” bloggers were writing these posts about it a few weeks ago. I did know that! 🙂

LOL!!! Have you resorted to giving the banister the death grip like I have?

  16. Losing Lindy says:

I didn’t grow up with Aldi, and I have a hard time with it. I will buy and have luck with shelf staples, but meat is a no go from there..won’t go into details..no need..just won’t do it. I also have a hit and miss relationship with the produce..no idea why. I don’t know what my issue is with it.

    • kilax says:

We buy as much of our stuff there as we can, but get some things elsewhere (Target, Garden Fresh, Walmart, Whole Foods, etc.). I have no experience with the meat but the produce seems just as hit and miss as every other place I go.

  17. I avoid the news like the plague- I read the Skimm and that’s about it. Just too depressing.

I also hate how people assume I do nothing when I work from home- because I actually get way more done!

I feel you on the friends thing- I’ve been meeting a lot of new people and I’ve been struggling to manage it all and prioritize. Thankfully I’ve really learned to say no!

  18. ChezJulie says:

#6 I feel that way about TV shows sometimes. Like I have “my shows” that I like to watch and I don’t have the energy to develop relationships with new shows.

#8 That is funny because I love Chicago. The energy, the history, the ethnic groups, the architecture! But of course I’ve only been there as a tourist and only in summer. 🙂

    • kilax says:

Ha! That is funny about #6!!! I read a blog post from someone saying something similar about TV recently 😉

Chicago is really fun as a tourist! Which is probably why I like NYC so much. I mean, I even got over living in Rome, after being there half a year!

  19. I also rolled my eyes when I read the blog post about Aldi’s and the visit to their headquarters. Ugh! It bugs me that these HLB “discover” all of these great things. Companies may go to them because of their stats but we all know the real reason they write those posts.

I love your wedding picture. Make me smile.
