Friday Question 248

By , March 21, 2014 6:56 am

Do you remember what your first social media posting (or status update) was on Facebook or Twitter – without looking it up? What was it?

Don’t worry – you can go ahead and look it up if you need to! I read this article (pdf here) about how Twitter added a function to search for your first tweet, in celebration of today being the eighth anniversary of the first tweet, and thought it would be fun to ask!

Aww, I was actually on Twitter for a short while in 2010. I tried it for a month or so, then deactivated my account, so I have no idea what my tweets were. Whoops! I don’t think we are missing out. Ha ha.

But! Oh, do I ever remember my first Facebook “status update,” in 2010.

I was a very passive Facebook user when I started using it. I initially made an account to keep tabs on my snister, when she was in college. Ha ha! Anyway, I wasn’t really in to it, and didn’t see why people wanted to share so many mundane things* in their status updates. My, how things have changed.

Well, I went on a run with Erin in the summer of 2010 and felt like I finally had some material worth sharing on Facebook:

Yes. Seeing someone run in the nude made a huge impression on me. I still think about that day, a lot. And wonder… did he lose a bet? Was he too hot? Did he soil his clothes? I will never know. It’ll be one of life’s great mysteries.

And now, of course, I post very silly stuff on Facebook**, like this:

That makes me laugh way more than it should.

Dangit. This was supposed to be a short post! But I have to share one more thing – one of my favorite things about Facebook is the “Pages” feed – where you see all the stuff that, well, the pages you follow, post. It seems these things never show up in my regular feed, and since I follow a lot of running and animal pages, it ends up being pretty funny, and regularly updated with “new” material since I “like” so many pages!

*I used it to contact people, and I think share photos, but I did not post “status updates” until April 14, 2010.
**But a little bit less now that I took the app off my phone.

Haha, OF COURSE your first status had a question in it!

My first status was me being excited that the Cubs (one of Chicago’s baseball teams, FYI) had made it into the playoffs in 2007. I had to go back and look, I couldn’t remember what the first thing I would have posted was. And I did see that Bob was my very first Facebook friend, awww.

Ha ha ha! Sigh. Yeah, I was reading it now and thinking that was kind of obnoxious. But, gosh, I ask so many questions! MUST LEARN EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYONE!

Wait, there is more than one team?!

Did the Cubs really make it in to the playoffs THAT recently? Buah ha ha. I remember the year the Sox won.

Aww, that is super cute! 🙂

I looked back on my timeline, and the first post I see is “having a superb snow day.” on March 2, 2007. However, I distinctly remember that I deleted all of my statuses as soon as I updated a new one (or as soon as it was irrelevant), so I’m sure I had something else before that. I didn’t like the idea of having posts from myself on my own wall when I first got FB… I thought it made me look stupid, so I always deleted them!! Darn. 🙁 All those memories down the drain.

I originally got Facebook so I could find Kyle and talk to him. Back then you couldn’t get an account without a college email, so I signed up the day I got my email from UNI, which was Dec. 2, 2006. 🙂

Damn.. I have been on Facebook for 7 years and 3 months… So much time wasted!!!!

    • kilax says:

Oh! I remember you doing that, now. Well, and at first, we could only update on our walls, right? It was later you could contact someone that way, or share, and that what was previously messages were posted on walls? I wonder if that is why I didn’t post many, either.

Do you really spend that much time on FB? You hardly ever post! 🙁

I am happy it wasn’t what it is now, when I was in college. And that I didn’t read as many blogs then. I NEVER would have gotten my work done!

      • Christina says:

Yeah, it was weird in the beginning. I can’t really remember exactly what it was like, but the status was always at the top of the page, until you changed it. And you couldn’t comment on a post you had to write on that person’s wall. They had a button “wall-to-wall” so you could see the full conversation. So strange to think about that now!!

I am on a LOT. But don’t really ever have anything worthwhile to say. 🙂 I am not one for over-sharing on there. I typically get on to read up on what everyone else is up to and don’t like the idea of someone knowing all of that about me! Lol!

It’s definitely a time-suck now. You can get on just to look at one thing, and then you see something else, and another thing, and 3 hrs later you’re like “Wtf am I doing?!”

  3. I just looked it up, and I said I loved my new tennis racquet. The second was about ikea chairs. Man, I lived an exciting life.

  4. Was 8/14/10 a Friday? If so it was your first Friday question!

  5. That is a GREAT first status! Mine make me cringe because they’re so lame… like “so ready for the weekend!” or “so over studying”. Meh. I’m ashamed…

  6. Jen2 says:

I just looked back at my first FB posts and they are SO lame!!! Good heavens! Maybe my posts are still lame, but that was just embarrassing. I joined 1/30/09.

  7. Kandi says:

I couldn’t figure out how to find my first tweet based on that article you linked to.. I’m sure you’re super sad to not know what I tweeted. I also have no idea what I posted on FB but I think that’d be easier to find. I don’t have the app on my phone either and only occasionally check it through my phone browser. I do use twitter pretty regularly but more often to follow other people than to post my own updates (though I do post a lot more frequently to twitter than FB).

  8. Amy says:

Wow-that is an epic first FB post. Mine was in like 2007 or something and I was like: “finally getting this whole facebook thing started.” I was a grad student and in China for the summer and thought it would be a fun way to keep in touch. Oh my, how it took over my life…

  9. jan says:

I have no idea what mine is but I’m cracking up at yours!! I can’t imagine that running nude for a guy is comfy…for obvious reasons!! LOL

  10. Amy says:

OK, you made me do it, I looked it up…this is earth shattering, so you might want to make sure you are sitting down…

My first status update was: “is about to head off to piano lessons.” Wow. Not even an actual activity, but a prelude to going to do an activity.

I find the story about the nude runner intriguing as well. Was he running really fast? Too bad you didn’t get a picture…

    • kilax says:

Phew! I am happy you told me to sit down! 🙂 Hee hee. I keep saying lately how I want to take piano lessons! Do you, still?

  11. martymankins says:

My first Twitter post in March 2008 was: “Trying to figure out how to add people here on Twitter” or something like that. Don’t recall my first Facebook post (I admit to liking Twitter more than Facebook).

I LOL’d at that Data video.

  12. Erin says:

I don’t remember either my first Facebook post (or Twitter, but I’m not going to look it up) but I do remember that naked guy!!
