Notes:

  • I was working from home on Monday and saw the rain turn to beautiful snow flakes as the temperature dropped and thought, “I want to go on a run in that beautiful snow!” Gah, worst idea ever. Ha ha. It was so windy, the snow was blowing right in to my face and I couldn’t see for most of the run. And the sidewalks were quickly getting icy. I am just happy I got back from that run safely. I won’t make that mistake again – running in windy snow when it’s just been raining… derrrrrrrrrrr.
  • That makes me sound like a snow hater. I am not. I love snow and I love cold weather. But, I would be lying if I said I was not grateful that the snow mostly held off for the bulk of my long runs training for the Dallas Marathon! It’s just easier to plan routes when you can run anywhere and don’t have to worry about snowy/icy trails (or their spring cousin, flooded trails). And it’s nice to not be stuck with loops in my neighborhood yet (due to the trails being buried in snow).
  • There was some snow and ice for my long run on Thursday though, hence the “uneven” comment above. And there was a whole lot of other “uneven” going on. A few miles in, I had a really strong pain in my right lower lat (after stopping and massaging it I could continue). That pain showed up on Tuesday the 18th, and I thought it might be hormonal, but it stuck. It’s gotten better since then, and I have a true massage soon that I think will help. I also had odd stomach issues – I think it was cause my pack froze and I couldn’t drink as much water. And yeah, difficult footing. My legs and lungs felt great, and that long run left me feeling confident for the marathon!
  • Like I mentioned in my whiny recap yesterday, I have a new monthly PDR – 250.2! And with that, it’s taper time! I have a 5K this week, a few more double digit runs, and two weeks until the marathon!

  1. Are the placement of the balls in the ?Monday strength picture deliberate ha ha! Enjoy the massage even when it hurts its soooooo good!

Ha ha ha, yeah, my class has a funny sense of humor. It’s hard to play with those things for an hour and not make inappropriate jokes!

  2. I think we’re all feeling a little weary at the end of the running season! Are you going to take any time off after the marathon? Slow down on the miles? 250–that’s a lot of miles! Great work!

    • kilax says:

If the weather cooperates, my highest mileage months are usually Jan-March, then I start to cut back on miles when it gets warmer. I don’t plan to run 250 though – that is just because I am marathon training, and I won’t be in the winter or spring.

  3. Kristina says:

I am SO impressed with your mileage! It’s great that you’ve been able to run so strong (injury-free!). But I hope that you enjoy backing off a bit and getting lots of rest for your legsl

    • kilax says:

Thanks! Yeah, I think strength training, along with making sure my shoes are in good shape and running slow lets me run so much! Ha ha, I will try to enjoy the rest period. I struggle with it 🙂

  4. Chaitali says:

Your mileage is awesome! And I love snow when I’m comfortably warm inside 🙂 I can definitely see it being a pain from the way you described your snowy run. Our county just announced that they’re planning to plow at least one of the main trails around here this winter so I think that will make it easier.

    • kilax says:

      Thanks!

Ha ha ha ha! So no snow runs for you?! That is nice they are going to plow a path! The one by my house is paved but they don’t plow it.

  5. Pete B says:

Yeah, as much as I hate to admit it, when there is too much snow on the trails I will hit the treadmill or the cross country skis. I can usually handle running on ice patches, but have slipped on it when walking. Glad to hear your legs and lungs are feeling it for the marathon! 🙂

    • kilax says:

Nothing wrong with that! I would like to try cross country skis! And I need to get out more on my snow shoes this year 🙂

  6. Marcia says:

Wow that’s a massive PDR! I too am just getting my “ice legs” this season. It’s weird but it gets better, right? My friend just broke her leg badly (like shattered and needed mega screws/plates/surgeries) while out running and slipping on ice. I feel SO bad for her!

    • kilax says:

Sigh, yes. Still need my snow legs. It does get better! It takes awhile though! And makes my hips quite sore!

Oh no!!!! That is horrible. I hope she has a healthy recovery!

  7. Wow this whole post was wining about snow lol j/ k.

Man that is a great month right there, keep up the good work.

  8. Michelle says:

Congrats on the monthly PDR! That’s AMAZING.

  9. karen says:

Wow!! Big Mileage month, awesome 🙂 I love the cold, but snow does make for challenging runs. It is awesome you have friends to run with!

  10. jan says:

I’ve made the same mistake w/ snow before…it looks so pretty until it’s being whipped into your face. LOL! I do love it still…without wind of course! 🙂

Glad you had a good solid week of working out even though your one run was a bit troublesome!

  11. Dana says:

Congrats on the PDR! That’s awesome 🙂

  12. Leana says:

The snow can definitely make winter training a challenge! I stick to pretty well the same route for all of my long runs because the pathway is fairly clear. They don’t clear snow off of all the pathways around town and they can turn into icy, uneven messes.

I hope your taper is going well!!

  13. Tapers drive us all crazy! I always try to relax and remember how beneficial to my tired muscles it is. And watch lots of Netflix. That helps too 🙂
