Knitting the alphabet

The scarf Data was modeling last week wasn’t actually Waldo inspired… but Wisconsin Badgers inspired!

With Rachel (who’s a Badgers fan) visiting last weekend, and March Madness going on, I thought it would be humorous to knit these for her cats, Leo (above) and Sox (below).

I expected them to be annoyed by the scarves, but Rachel said they didn’t mind and ended up sleeping with them! Aww!

I was eager to move on to another project, after I finished the cat scarves. But what? When I finished the infinity scarf for my snister in February, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to work on, so I started another scarf with the same pattern. I enjoyed working on it for a good month (it’s almost done now), but I got a bit bored with it. It was just the same pattern, row after row after row after row. This time, I wanted to try something that had a bit more variety, and would be done quicker (ha – that scarf has hundreds of rows, and I picked a new project with 61 rows!).

So I looked around on Ravelry and found this pattern for monogrammed dishcloths. I’ll be seeing my maternal grandmother in April and knew she would get a kick out of them! I often buy her handmade soap, so why not some handmade cloths to go with?

I started on Thursday night and finished on Sunday night. I did the pink one first, and really liked it, then moved on the to multi-colored one. It was my first time working with a skein like that and I had NO idea what it would turn out like. And… I don’t really like it, ha ha! I like the green one the best, because of the color, and because I was holding the yarn tighter, and I prefer the way that made the spacing turn out. Of course, I’m sure my grandma will think all three are great!

I ended up buying the entire alphabet pattern for these dishcloths, because I liked the font style, so it’ll be fun to knit other letters. It’s pretty cool that just by varying whether you are knitting or purling a stitch, you end up with a design!

Awesome! Those look great! I just bought a ton of yarn so I am well stocked for when i have to make more baby blankets and hats for all my friends having more kids.

  2. Those dishcloths are beautiful, Kim! I’m sure your grandmother will absolutely love them. You are a great gift giver. 🙂

The kitty scarfs are too cute. Go Badgers!!

Love the washcloths. I may have to get that pattern from you. If you need help tackling something new, please done hesitate to ask. Some patterns can be intimidating but really aren’t so bad once you get started. You’re doing great!

The cats slept with the scarves? My furbaby would never do that. She’s very particular. If you want another project, hot pads are always needed. My mom’s aunt knitted her some and she uses them all the time. They’re very bright and multicolored.

Yeah, they slept on them, or in them 🙂

Hot pads is a good idea! I wonder how thick of a yarn I should use for that 🙂

How cool you can knit a monogram. I’m very impressed. My letter is H. Just sayin’.

Look at all that creativity coming out 🙂 I love the cat modeling 🙂

Thanks! I didn’t mention it in the post but the scarves were the first thing I’ve made without a pattern, so that was kind of fun for me! 🙂

  7. You’re making me want to learn how to knit/crochet now! I am loving all of these amazing creations that you keep whipping up!

  8. Michelle says:

Oh I love the monogrammed ones!!! The cats look adorable in their scarves!

  9. That is SO cool! I’ve never seen that done in knitting before! The pink and green dishcloth actually reminds me a lot of dishclothes my great-grandma made, so I think it’s very appropriate for a grandma 🙂

The washcloths look awesome! I really like the green one too.

Kev and I were amused all weekend at how the boys tolerated their scarves. Mostly we put them on when they were sleepy and cuddly, but even when I tied the one around Soxie when he was playful he was like “eh, I look good!”

    • kilax says:

      Thank you! 🙂

Ha ha, I am happy you guys got some entertainment out of it! I guess the boys just wanna strut their stuff! (and show their Badger pride!)

These are so fancy! Was it a lot harder than just a straight knit? All your knitting talk makes me want to take it up again. I went through a knitting phase in college (isn’t that what all the cool kids did in college?), but haven’t done it since.

    • kilax says:

Thanks! No, it’s just like a straight knit, you just count the stitches so you know when to knit and when to purl. I hope you pick it up again! What did you make in college?

That’s so cool! I’ve never taken a knitting class before so I don’t know about these cool things and I don’t know how to follow a pattern. I usually just knit and rarely purl… I have only ever made scarves. I can also crochet a little but only know the basics. I’d love to learn more but don’t have the time right now.

(Sorry if I hit reply when I was half done before, delete that one LOL)

Anyhow I was saying, those dishclothes are awesome and what special handmade gifts they’ll be!! You really picked up knitting quickly!

  14. Amy says:

Nice job! You’re getting to be a talented knitter!

  15. Mica says:

Those turned out so well — even the variegated yarn one that you don’t like! I think it adds cool variety to the set, so it works well. 🙂 The font is really classy, what a nice gift for your grandma! Maybe I’ll have to get the patterns for Christmas, too!

    • kilax says:

Thank you! Ahh, so that is what the yarn was called! I bet you would have known it would turn out like that, by looking at it!

I will be happy to share it! 🙂

  16. Every Christmas, my mom crochets us all washcloths and puts them in our stockings. She finds patterns related to each of us, whether it’s our initials, the state we live in, our favorite animal, etc. They’re fun!

    • kilax says:

On neat! That is so fun! Do you use the washcloths? I keep making these, but I am someone who doesn’t use washcloths, so I wonder if other people do…?

  17. Love, love them! Now if you ever get really bored again, then I will take one with a Z. 🙂
