Random Thoughts Thursday 69

  • Oops, I didn’t make the connection when registering for this 33.5 mile ultra on Saturday that we had a seven hour course limit (with an option for eight hours if you start early). That averages out to a 12:32 minute mile. Which seems like a lot… if you don’t spend too much time at the aid stations. Ha ha ha. I am sure Rachel and I will be just fine! We hope to be done in around six hours, which is a 10:45 minute mile average pace (our first ultra, which we did together, was a 50K that took us over seven hours, but was on much harder terrain). I won’t be upset if it takes us longer. Trail races are about having fun (for us!), anyways!

  • Autocorrect is so confused on my phone. It’s already pretty wonky to start with, but I am still practicing Spanish on my phone so now it thinks I want to autocorrect words misspelled in English to Spanish words. Que molesto.
  • I question almost all studies I read, but I have to say, I like the results of this one (pdf here) – “A new study tracked mortality rates and found that excessive exercise carried no increased risk of dying.” To super simplify the results, the study found that people exercising up to 10 times or more the amount recommended per week (equivalent to 50 miles run per week) were not at risk for death (and that some health benefits continue to increase the more people in the study exercised per week). Why do I care about this study? Because every once in awhile, someone wants to talk to me about “running too much.” These comments never make me worry about my health… just look at me – I’m not injured, I’m obviously not exercising this much because I am obsessed with being at a low weight, I don’t do it when I don’t enjoy it (hello, most summers), and I don’t complain about exercising. But these comments do get a bit old. So maybe next time I will throw this study back if I feel like it. Ha ha.
  • Ugh. This music video. All the sads. Again, SPOILER ALERTS for Furious 7 – this pretty much shows the ending to the movie. Sigh, sometimes a good cry feels so good, but I don’t think I should watch this anymore. Also… doesn’t Charlie Puth kind of look like Andy Samberg from his side profile?

  • My maternal grandma called me to tell me she loved the washcloths I knit her (I wasn’t able to give them to her in person), and that she was already using them to wash dishes! Yay! She particularly liked that they were knit tight, and not loose. Ha ha… yeah. I knit tight. I need a new project. I haven’t worked on knitting since last week!

Thanks for the info on the benefits of running 50 MPW, which has been my average over the last couple of months. That’s the best news I’ve had in awhile: I am not at risk of death! Immortality here I come. 🙂 Also I’m amazed that I am doing 10x the recommended amount of exercise and I’m only running something like 8 hours a week. That doesn’t include strength training and yoga. Maybe I’m overdoing it? I don’t care, I enjoy it. 🙂

      You’ll live 4EVA!!!!!

Well, the current recommendation is 30 mins, 5x a week… so when you are faster, you can get a lot of running done in that amount of time!

Your body will tell you if you are overdoing it 😉

  2. I have that Spanish autocorrect on my phone too and oops if I don’t realize it when I’m texting! I get some interesting results!

  3. Rachel says:

Heehee, the card from Gina is awesome.

I just re-read your 50k recap and had all the feels. Awww, what a great day!

    • kilax says:

I wanted to post a pic of her screenshot and the real reason we might get delayed on course. Ha ha ha!

That was such a great day! We really had awesome weather. And I love how it turned out that we all ran together. And LOL at me thinking that post was too long. They are way longer now. Oops.

I haven’t seen Furious 7 yet. Not ready for that big ugly cry.

  5. I never believe those “studies” that come out every year about how basically doing anything more than the bare minimum of exercise means you’ll die sooner. Every one of these studies is promptly critiqued and debunked every time. I groan every time because whenever one of them comes out it’s just used by people who hate exercise as an excuse to keep being lazy and hate on people who work hard.

We’re all going to die one way or another. Sometimes I think we have become so afraid to die that we forget to live.

Good luck this weekend! I’m sure you’ll do awesome!!

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha, I know! The thing is though, I bet you could find a “study” online for almost anything you want to “prove.” 😉

Thanks! I am looking forward to the race!

Thankfully I don’t get those running too much comments, but I’m sure I could think of a snarky comeback.

  7. The autocorrect on my phone is nuts! I have to be SUPER careful typing anything because of the random things that it decides to come up with.

That cat treadmill photo is hilarious and so true!!!

Good luck to you and Rachel at your ultra. Go tear it up out there and have a blast!!!

  8. jan says:

Glad your knitting project is being used! And that cat cartoon is hilarious. I’m sure your ultra will be awesome and you’ll have no problem w/ that pace!

  9. Michelle says:

no desire to see F7, LOL! Gotta love autocorrect.

  10. Karen says:

I think your high mileage is impressive 🙂 I have runners envy. Running “too much” is going to vary so much person to person, we are all so different. My doc think 25 miles a week may be too much for me…we’ll see (sigh) trying to work my way back up!

    • kilax says:

Yes, it varies a TON! I love reading about how much the elites run a week – wowza!

I hope you get better soon and your doctor clears you to run as much as you want! 🙂

  11. Mica says:

Yay, that’s awesome that your grandma liked the washcloths. They make such a good gift. What’s next?!? Did you find anything since you wrote this? A hat? A project on circular needles?!?

As you probably know (revelry–RAVELRY!!!!!!), my phone autocorrects shit all the time. Also, I have the French and English keyboards, and if I’m on the wrong one, it will autocorrect to the wrong language. So when I write in French on the English keyboard or vice versa, my phone is just like “Dafuq? Do you mean this totally random word?!?” I get really annoyed and just get around it by writing in all caps…which I’m sure isn’t annoying at all, hahaha.

    • kilax says:

I have worked on nothing in a few weeks! Horrible, right? I should have used part of my lazy time last weekend to go learn circulars at the shop! Oops! I want something to work on 🙁

Ha! I should try the caps thing! The autocorrect just grates me. Yesterday, I wrote “ishe” without a space, and my phone changed it to “I she” instead of what I meant… “Is he.” Like, freaking duh you POS. Ha ha. And that doesn’t even have to do with Spanish! 🙂
