Random Thoughts Thursday 72

  • Knitting update! I am finished with the washcloth order for my Grandma! I started on Friday May 1st and finished yesterday, May 13th. At first I was getting one done a day (they take about three hours each) then I slowed down at the end (which means I was sitting around less, and not knitting, ha ha). Next up: more washcloths (my mom requested some, and I’ll do some more monogrammed ones for my Grandma), a new scarf pattern, cactus push pin holders for Christina, a request for something from Gina, and that laptop sleeve (oops, that’s been in the queue awhile).

  • More knitting news! My mom received the scarf I made her for Mother’s Day and loved it! She wore it to work and said she was excited to show it to a coworker who knits all the time. Errr… how about let’s not show it to someone who will see all the mistakes in it? Ha ha… sorta kidding. When I see my mom (tomorrow!) I’ll have to ask her what that coworker said!

  • I’m CPR/AED recertified! Yay! What a long day though – I was in training at work from 8-4, then rode the train to the CPR training and rushed to get there for the 6-9 class. I slept well last night!

  • Who else ate macaroni and cheese with hot dogs as a child? Who else still craves it from time to time, now? Me! And guilty! We have some vegan mac n’ chreese (<— not a typo) mixes from FakeMeats at home, and when I saw the vegan hot dogs at Target I knew the combo needed to happen. It was so good. I think it will hold me over from craving it for another year, though.

  • I keep looking at my bird books but can’t figure out these species visiting our feeders. Fail.

Ha, I will forever recognize red-winged black birds, though!

Great update. I just did CPR/AED re-training yesterday, too, although I was only in a 3 hour session. “Judy, call 9-1-1!” “Lisa, get the AED!” I had taken it before but not retained much, so it felt really good to get a refresher. I know a guy in his 30s who had a heart attack at the light rail stop and was saved by a bystander.

    • kilax says:

Ha! Twins! Yes… “The area is safe!” “Are you okay? I am going to give you CPR!” “You! Call 911, get the AED!” “Stand clear!” LOL

Oh gosh! That is so fantastic to hear it actually working. I think they kind of make it seem like it works a lot better than it does on TV and in movies…

  2. Ooh what yarn is the plaid looking one? Those look so cool. I was so lame about knitting this winter. I need to pick it up for planes and airports again!

  3. HoHo Runs says:

Argh…the squirrels. They take over at my house, even with 2 dogs chasing them all.day.long. They also descend the ladder and drink out of our pool. Please…just make yourselves at home!

    • kilax says:

LOL! You know what is funny though? We never had a single squirrel in our yard until I started putting out bird feeders a few years ago. Then… there they were! LOL. I think they’re fun, as long as they don’t chew apart my feeders! 🙂

  4. Is that squirrel (or chipmunk?) INSIDE your bird feeder?! Oh man. What a bold little critter! Trying to keep squirrels out of the bird feeders has been a constant battle for my parents, though the ones at their house aren’t too bold. The ones at my grandma’s house, on the other hand…. You’d think they’d be content to eat the scraps on the ground, so those don’t require risking life and limb, but nope. They’ll happily climb up and try to navigate the squirrel-proof cover my grandma has over her bird feeder, which inevitably leads to them slipping and falling to the ground, just to get back up and do it all over again. They’re persistent, that’s for sure! My grandma also has deer that will stroll up to her bird feeder and eat the seed as if it were placed there just for them. Those woodland creatures just do not know their place! Hahaha.

Oh man, I LOVED mac & cheese + hot dogs when I was a kid. I haven’t thought about that in so long, but that was always my favorite way to have mac & cheese.

    • kilax says:

The chipmunk is who got insider the feeder… which is funny, my parents got me that feeder for xmas and my mom was like “I am so excited to see a bird sit in that spot!” I have only ever seen that chipmunk do it.

Squirrels are PERSISTENT! 🙂 Your grandma’s place sounds like my dad’s mom’s place – lots of seed and food out for all the animals. I love to watch them when I am there! I’d love to live even more in the country and see more animals!!! It’s fun to watch the squirrels slip on their butts (as long as they are not harmed, ha ha).

Let me know if you make it! Ha!

  5. Heather says:

    *whimpers* I forgot…the blackbirds are coming…

  6. Shelley B says:

Wow, that’s a lot of good looking washcloths! You are rocking with the knitting.

Is that a chipmunk or a squirrel? The face looks chipmunkish. We have those same kind of special “birds” in our feeder, too.

    • kilax says:

Thank you! Do you think it’s okay to just knit them then use them… they don’t need to be blocked or whatever it’s called… right? 🙂

Squirrel in the top pic, chipmunk in the bottom. Ha! What special “birds” do you get?! 🙂

      • Shelley B says:

I don’t bother with blocking washcloths if they’re meant to be used, because once they hit the water, the blocking is undone. Now, if I knitted a pretty lacy washcloth that was more for display, then yes, I’d block it. Blocking makes your stitches look so smooth, plus you can slightly stretch out your piece to make it even on all sides.

We have squirrels in our backyard – lots of them. I like to watch them romp and play, but it does irk me to see them at the birdfeeder buffet.

        • kilax says:

Thank you SO much for the input! I appreciate it, Master Knitter! They are definitely for use. The ones I will make for my friend Gina will be pretty, for display, so I will look in to it for those 🙂

Ha ha! Are they destroying your feeders?

  7. Lesley says:

We got squirrels all the time with out feeders so my mom said enough was enough. Now they throw seed out on the ground for whoever wants it. Doing it that way lets the birds beat the squirrels to the food.

  8. Karen says:

    That’s a talented squirrel lol
I had mac-n-cheese mixed with collard greens last night for dinner. I had it once last week too. I crave mac-cheese every so often, it’s a comfort food. I’ve never had the vegan kind. This post reminded my son asked me for Super Links the other day. Ever have them?

    • kilax says:

I haven’t! What are Super Links?

      • Karen says:

A company called Worthington used to make vegetarian hotdogs in can, they are the tastiest things, but it seems everywhere near me stopped carrying the darn brand.

        • kilax says:

My husband said Worthington is in transition right now – they were recently bought by another company – but he hopes to have the hot dogs on Fake Meats later this year. 🙂 I don’t recall if we’ve tried them!

  9. Losing Lindy says:

love the washcloths, can I place and order?

    • kilax says:

I’d love to make you some, but I not sure it’s worth to buy them from me when you can get them in the store for so much cheaper. 😉 Would you want solid colors or patterned? (the yarn price varies for those)

  10. Amy says:

Good job on all your knitting!
Have you ever tried the famous vegan mac and cheese from Veg News magazine? It is SO GOOD…http://vegnews.com/articles/page.do?pageId=40&catId=10

    • kilax says:

I haven’t! But I am super excited that it does not have nutritional yeast in it. It looks delish! Thanks for sharing!

  11. So much yes to macaroni and cheese with hot dogs. We ate it all the time growing up. Our babysitter used to call the hot dogs “pennies.” I’m not sure if it made it more appetizing or not. I still like it no (and Spaghetti O’s with dogs, too). It’s comforting. I ate it on the regular when I was pregnant.

  12. Marcia says:

You are a knitting machine! Glad your mom liked her scarf (of course she did!). Argh those dang squirrels! We didn’t have mac n cheese with hot dogs growing up but my dad put hot dog slices in scrambled eggs.

  13. Chaitali says:

You are so impressive with the knitting! Those wash cloths look very cool.

  14. jan says:

I have made mac & cheese & hot dogs for my kids before. It’s such a fun, junky lunch! 🙂 Glad you were able to find a vegetarian version!

  15. Mica says:

So many washcloths! You’re on FIRE! Those little cactus pincushions are so cute. Let me know how they turn out (I’m sure I will hear, one way or another!).

OMG the ducks at your front door! Were they coming to say hi to you?! That would slay me.

Also, I knew that was a CPR dummy, but I still thought to myself “Why is that doll wearing such a weird vest?” Ugh, I am sleep-deprived.

    • kilax says:

I will def let you know! That will be my first “in the round” project. Eeek!!!!!

Yes! Well, they come to eat the seed that the birds push on the ground. They are SO DARN CUTE! I hope they bring their babies, when they have them.

LOL! Hope you are more well rested today!

  16. martymankins says:

Your mention of vegan mac and cheese reminds me of that place here in SLC we went to after the Marathon, City Cakes. I actually liked it, being surprised at how good to was. And this comes from a certified cheese maven.

    • kilax says:

I still think about how you SAVED the day for me that morning! Thank you so much! I really enjoyed seeing you so much on that trip!

And that place WAS hella good 😀 I took my mom there that afternoon! 🙂
