Random Thoughts Thursday 75

  • When I was seeing Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation Sunday night, the screen went blank (and of course, at the start of the movie’s climax!). Right away, I figured it had something to do with the weather – it had been nasty windy and hot all day, and my weather app kept telling me storms were coming. But I checked the app in the theater and it wouldn’t load. Huh. Then everyone’s emergency warnings started going off on their phones for a tornado warning! Yikes! We finished the movie (I was a bit distracted) then went outside and saw some ominous clouds and a crazy lightening show. Turns out an EF-1 tornado did go by – and according to the path of travel map, it started about two and a half miles east of my house. Nuts! I know a ton of people who live in the path of travel and I’m happy no one was hurt! (And after that, very happy my car was okay outside during the movie – I had just picked it up from the shop for body work the day before.) I wonder if this is the closest I’ve been to a tornado now, or if that one in 2005 was closer.

  • My summer flip flop wearing habits have caught up with me, and I have a bit of tenderness in my left heal upon waking up or after sitting down for awhile. Ahh, plantar fasciitis. I am not interested in dealing with that (I had it in opposite feet two summers in a row), so I’ve been wearing my boot at night and sneakers more often. Really, I should wear sneakers around the house, too. Maybe the ones I bought myself for my birthday? So preeeeeeeety.

  • Steven got me a Therapik for my birthday.  You place it over a bug bite, and a bulb inside heats up and neutralizes the bug venom, and makes the bite itch and swell less. Sounds completely hokey but I have been using it since he got it for me and it’s really making the bites NOT itch. AMAZING!!! And really, the heat on your skin provides enough relief from the itching, I don’t care how it works, ha ha.

  • Don’t worry, my sole gift wasn’t the bug bite zapper, ha ha! Steven also got me a fance new multisport watch that seems to do a million different things!

Ha ha, I only wore one watch that day.

  • My mom got a smart phone this weekend. Yay! I’m super excited about this. Her dumb phone barely allowed her to receive texts, and the screen was so tiny she could barely see the photos we’d send her. Do your parents have smart phones? Are they on social media? I’ve heard a few people say that their parents shouldn’t have smart phones or be on social media, but I’ve always wanted mine to be – it’s easier to stay connected that way!
  • Ha ha, I had ALL the posts last week, and hardly any this week. Seems I have turned in to a mostly “event” blog for now – I mostly write when I do an event (and my training posts). That’s okay. I keep hoping the inspiration to write about thoughts/ideas will come back, but it hasn’t.

Eek tornado. Scary stuff! I had a lot of friends near the path it took but no one in it fortunately!

    What garmin is that???

    The therapik…I might need one.

And oh my at plantar. I thought supinators were statistically much less likely to get it! :O

    • kilax says:

I am so grateful the tornado didn’t hurt anyone. I guess it happened so quickly they couldn’t even turn on the sirens where I live! Nuts!

      It’s the Garmin Forerunner 920XT.

Totally get the Therapik! The heat feels SO good on my bites 😉

Hmm, I haven’t heard that about supinators! Could be true!

      • Heather says:

I am too. I woke up and saw what had happened and panicked trying to get a hold of some family and friends. Turned out my family had been out of town. Whew!

        920! It is FANCE.

I read it had something to do with pronation and that because of it supinators were much less likely to get it. But, I don’t remember why, and googling is not giving me the article, darn it!

        • kilax says:

Oh good! Did you guys have the sirens go off where you live?

I suppose pronation might make the muscle tighter, and supination stretches it out? But I don’t think that helps when I am wearing hella flat flip flops!

  2. I’m so glad you are ok, that is scary. We get the occasional tornado warning here but they only seem to drop down over the lake. I love the watch but he would have made me happy with the bug zapper lol. Please let me know if it really works cause I need one of those in my life. Sorry about your PF, hope it gets better soon 🙁

    • kilax says:

I guess this one eventually ended up over the lake, as a waterspout! Kind of wish I could have seen it!

The Therapik IS working! You are supposed to use it as soon as you get the bite for maximum effectiveness. I am usually out running when I get bit, so that is a no go, but I apply it as soon as I get home, and have only had to apply a few times after. It’s making me not scratch my bites – AMAZING!

  3. HoHo Runs says:

I’m surprised the theater kept playing the movie with a tornado warning going on. That is a fancy Garmin. Which model is it?

    • kilax says:

The sirens never went off, we all just got warnings on our phones! I guess it came in too quick for sirens. I was happy we got to see the end – I really liked the film but didn’t want to sit through it again to see the end 😉

      It’s the Garmin Forerunner 920XT. 🙂

  4. Kandi says:

Yikes! Tornados are scary! We had one pretty close to my hometown the summer before I started high school. They are much more rare here than in the Midwest though.
That Garmin looks super fancy! That’s cool that it can show weather warnings. What was the score thing about?
My parents don’t have smart phones but my mom just recently got a text plan! They do have tablets though so they both are on instagram now so they can see photos I post (mostly of their grandson). My dad is also on Facebook but he only really uses it to keep up with others. I don’t think he posts about himself.

  5. Oh wowwwwwww how FANCY! I would feel like a secret agent if all of a sudden my wrist started telling me the news HAHA. (Technically, my Polar M400 is smart notification enabled, so I suppose I could start feeling like a secret agent, but I can think of exactly zero circumstances under which I would want my watch telling me I have an email while I’m out on a run, so I don’t have the capability turned on. I figure if there’s a tornado coming while I’m out running, I’ll probably be able to pick it up from visual clues 😛 ).

I’m glad you were all right in the storm on Sunday. It was pretty nasty!

    • kilax says:

I didn’t think I’d want text/phone call notifications on, but it’s nice to get a glimpse of it and not stop to drag my phone out to look at it when I am working out. Running is one of the only times I turn on notifications for texts, in case Steven is trying to get a hold of me, so I get random other texts too that can wait. It’s also nice to have notifications if I wear it around people, so I am more inconspicuous, looking at my watch instead of my phone, but I am not sure how much I will wear the watch when I am not working out.

Funny you say that about the storm! It was originally predicted that the storm would be that morning, so I was kind of bummed when I went outside and it was so sunny. I was looking forward to some cloud coverage. But to your point, I knew I would be able to figure out on my own when I needed shelter.

  6. Chaitali says:

That tornado sounds scary! Glad everyone was ok. I have never heard of a bug bite zapper but that sounds awesome! I feel like I’ve had a ton of bites recently and they all itch like crazy. I might have to look into this.

  7. That tornado picture looks like something out of a movie!!! YIKES!!! Glad that you were okay!!!

OMG, all the new fun toys and gadgets and shoes!!! I’ve seen those new purple Cumuluses around and I think they are SO GORGEOUS. Best color design I’ve seen in the Cumuluses, ever.

I need to get one of those bug-bite zappers! The itchiness just drives me crazy and it seems like nothing I’ve ever tried can make it go away! Those over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams (or whatever they are called) don’t really work. =(

The new Garmin looks amazing and so high tech! What model is it?

    • kilax says:

Yes, they are totally the most gorg Cumuleses, ever. Next in line is the teal ones <3 <3 <3 I wish they would do orange for women. Cry.

Yeah, the creams don't work, and they are messy and they make you look silly!

      It's the Forerunner 920XT. 🙂

  8. Yikes, that tornado pass by sounds scary. Uhg PF, it’s the worst…hopefully you get over it quickly. Wow that watch is crazy cool.

  9. Jen2 says:

Ooh, I think I need to get one of those bug bite thingies!! Both Troy and Declan get bit up SO badly! I think this is a must for McSherry household!!

Love your new shoes and Garmin! Both are so pretty.

    • kilax says:

I am not sure if it should be used on kids. It’s essentially heating up your skin to the point of discomfort. But it would definitely work for Troy!

  10. Kristina says:

Yikes to the tornado! Glad that you were/are safe!
As for flip-flops, I am glad to know that I’m not alone in having to don other, less ‘cool’, summer footwear. I think that they were what aggravated my tendon issue, so I’ve avoided them since June. It’s so frustrating though b/c they are such the perfect summer shoe! Hope that your foot/feet feel 100% soon.

  11. Oooh, fancy watch! It will sync to Garmin Connect via your phone! That’s crazy that the weather alerts came in on it as well! Happy belated B-Day!

  12. Amy says:

Oh, I will never forget all the tornado stuff from when I lived in Illinois…drills, going down in the basement in the middle of the night, and how the sky turns that weird green color…

I hope your mom likes her new phone. I’m still hanging on to my old dumb phone, I even bought a new battery for it recently. I do have an I-pad, so I’m not totally out of the app loop, but I like the simplicity of my phone.

    • kilax says:

Yep, pretty common, right?! And we don’t even have a basement! 😮

My mom definitely doesn’t need the bells and whistles of a smart phone, but I am just happy she will be able to see when we are trying to communicate with her, now. LOL!a

  13. kapgar says:

gkad to hear you pulled through the weather okay. Didn’t realize how close it was to you.

Both my parents have iPhones and both are in Facebook. Now you know why I use Twitter so much. 😉

  14. Beth says:

Your new watch is so fancy! And I can’t imagine what it would have been like to see those clouds in real life. Looks scary! Glad you’re okay and your friends are all okay, too! And I love your new shoes–they’re so cute!

  15. Wait, you were watching a movie while a tornado was passing by? Glad no one got hurt. Love your watch!!

  16. Karen says:

I owe you a Happy Birthday!! the watch is awesome 🙂 I love the shoes. I have heels spurs and I always wear a pair of supportive slippers around the house, it really does make a hug difference. I also gave up wearing flat sandals, I have a thick pair of Sketchers I wear and they help with recovery after a run 🙂
That is so cool the therapick works! I have never heard of it, but i love it.

  17. Mica says:

Ooh, that pen sounds interesting! A friend just told me about using a hair dryer to heat up a bug bite (I guess the same idea…neutralizing the venom with heat?). I’ll have to try it!

What did you think of “Rogue Nation”? I’m glad that tornado didn’t get close to the theater or anyone’s house!

    • kilax says:

Yeah, same idea! Sometimes I would turn the shower water on really hot, and put my bites under that, too. So I think it’s just that heat feels nice.

I liked the movie! I thought it was fun and engaging 🙂 Did you see it?

  18. Alyssa says:

That’s the 920xt, right? It looks so nice! I want it! But I have the 910 so I won’t be upgrading anytime soon. Do you like it so far? Do you use the activity tracking on it too?

That stinks about the plantar fascitis. I had it a few years ago when I first started running though I had no idea what it was. I’ve switched to mostly only wearing Birkenstock sandals and that has helped a lot! No more crappy flat flip flops. My dad and my mom both had plantar fascitis this year I think mostly from standing on their feet all day at work so I showed them a bunch of exercises to do with their feet!

    • kilax says:

It is the 920 xt. Actually, when my husband asked me what I wanted, I went to Garmin Connect and looked up your stats from Espirit de She, cause I remembered seeing them and thinking it was cool your watch did that – so I told my husband, “I want one like this.” 🙂 I do have activity tracking on it. It does steps, sleep and calories. It logs my steps but doesn’t put them on Connect. Haven’t figured out how… nor do I care that much. I know I sit too much.

Oh cool! Pass those foot exercises along! 🙂

      • Alyssa says:

Ha awesome! I do love my 910!

I know I sit too much too! I have to work at a desk duh! I’m happy if I meet my steps goal even if I have been sitting most of the day.

You can do towel scrunches where you try to scrunch up a towel on the floor by curling your toes. I’ve found a lot of relief just by stretching out my feet–I just put my toes against the wall and lift the rest of my foot up (like trying to bend your toes backwards) and I feel the stretch in the arch of my foot. Or using a small ball (like a golf ball) to roll out the tendons/muscles of the feet!

        • kilax says:

And the dumb thing is, even if you stand, you aren’t getting more “steps.” And if you don’t get any for riding your bike. So… I don’t really value it THAT much 😉 But know I need to move more since I have a desk job, too!

Oh, thanks! I haven’t done the towel thing yet, or the simple wall stretch. I should get my ball out, derrr, forgot I had one. It’s been awhile since I’ve dealt with this!
