The forgotten month

By , September 2, 2015 5:07 am

When I was learning the months of the year as a kid, I always forgot September.  I recalled the other months by associating them with holidays and birthdays, but I had nada for September (Labor Day doesn’t mean much to a kid, you know?).

I remember feeling puzzled when the amount of months I remembered didn’t add up to twelve. In my mind, the calendar went straight from August to October! What really happens in September, anyway, for a kid (ugh, except being in school for the full month, blah)?

I eventually starting remembering September (obviously, ha ha), and now, it’s funny to me, that as an adult, it’s one of my favorite months! I think the reason I didn’t remember it as a kid is what I love about it now – September is subtle. It’s when summer slips away to fall (yay!). Your calendar starts to clear up. You have more free time*. It’s the rest before the holiday season starts (earlier and earlier, each year). A time to recharge and refocus!

Ahhh.

Here are two photos from my first September run (yesterday). I knew it would be a foggy morning and ran to my favorite forest preserve for taking fog photos.

Happy September!

*Well, I do. But I don’t have kids going back to school with lots of activities.

I didn’t think you ever had free time 😉

September is my favorite month too! I especially love the part about summer slipping away to fall because I love fall so much. I love seeing everything start to change, even though I know it means winter isn’t far behind.

My weeknights are typically accounted for due to work, but my weekends start to clear up! I have two weekends in September with only one commitment each!

It never gets old to me, to watch the leaves change color – especially to see which trees go first. And I love running on the crunchy leaves (and knowing winter isn’t far behind, lol).

Beautiful fog photos! October is generally my favorite month but that’s also when we tend to go on vacation 🙂 September still tends to be hot and feel like Summer to me.

Oh yeah, I know from visiting that area in September that you guys get the later fall! And out here, we’ll still have nasty humid days in October. LOL, get it together, mother nature!

I remembered September because that’s when I got back to playing soccer. Yay fall seasons!

Beautiful shots 🙂 Wish I was there! Usually in late September we will start get some less humid days and I can not wait 🙂

I love September for the exact same reasons you do. I love your phrase “September is subtle”. That’s a very poignant description.

Great pics too! I really enjoy foggy, morning runs.

  6. Wow beautiful photos! September is one of my favorite months, too, but my experience of it (and the reason I love it) is the opposite of yours – I think this month is anything but subtle! September is one of the most vivacious months of the year – it’s when the world wakes up from the summer slump and rushes back to life. My September calendar is filling up like crazy while August was nothings-ville. What I think is so interesting about September is how it flirts with two different seasons: clinging on to the last of summer while teasing us with hints of fall. It artfully embodies the turbulent transition from one to the next. I think it is the single most dynamic month of the year. Plus, kids are going back to school, so there is quite a buzz in the air, at least for the first week

      Thanks 🙂

Our experiences are QUITE different! But I bet a lot of people have similar experiences to you – especially those with kids going back to school and everything gearing back up! For me, it’s when I feel like I finally start to have some free weekends again 🙂

  7. Absolutely gorgeous. I love the photos!

I feel like September kind of gets the short end of the stick. I always resented it because it’s when we’d go back to school (In VA, public schools used to start the day after Labor Day.), and it was still so hot that it felt like summer.

My fall is also starting to really ramp up. We must be very busy and important people! Teehee.

So funny that you used to forget it! It’s one of my favorite months as well. The weather is some of the best IL has to offer, I think. Well except last week/weekend. That was ICK and not at all September.

  10. I love September too! Oh and great pictures from your run.
