More visitors

At the same time I telling you guys about Denali being in our yard (who, by the way, we haven’t seen in a week) I was saying to Steven “I wonder when the deer are going to come visit!”* We live extremely close to two forest preserves, and I saw a large pack of deer in an open area of one preserve a few times and wondered if they’d come by…

… and some did, this morning!

At first, Data and I just saw one.

Data growled when he saw the first one in the yard. Oh, Data.

Then we followed him and realized he was with five others!

You can totally see them, right?! Ha.

I know – seeing deer in your yard isn’t that novel for the northern Chicago suburbs. And six isn’t that many. But I had been hoping they’d come by since we moved in, so it was exciting for me!

Next up – actually meeting the human neighbors, ha! Steven talked to a few of them before we moved in, and they seem really nice. We live on a dead-end street with only a few houses, so it would seem odd not to stop by and introduce ourselves. Hopefully we can this weekend!

*I do want the woodland creatures to visit – just not dogs without accompanying humans.

“Deer? Yawn. Been there, barked at that.” – Heidi

I’m still excited every time I see deer in our front “yard” or roaming around the neighborhood – it’s not novel for me! Probably because this is the first time I’ve ever seen them where I live. The most wildlife I ever saw in the city was possums (eww), and back in Ohio I’d see the occasional raccoon and that was about it.

Heidi is such a snob now that she’s revealed her modeling past! Is there anything she won’t say “been there, sniffed that” to?!

Every time I’d see them before moving here, I’d get excited – even if it was totally a place where it makes sense for them to be 🙂 They’re so beautiful and it’s a pleasure to watch them! ! A little more graceful than raccoons 😉

Uh, any of the toys we bought her? LOL

I never really saw any deer before we moved up here! Occasionally while running through Half Day, but not nearly as often as I do now!

  2. I love deer.its so nice that you can just look out and see them!

  3. Lesley says:

That’s still exciting. We got turkeys in Massachusetts, and one of the cats would get indignant. Those things aren’t supposed to be in his yard!

Please get a video of Data growling next time. I want to hear what that sounds like 🙂 that’s so cool you have wildlife visiting you! I wonder what other critters might swing by?

    • kilax says:

Oh gosh. I hope I don’t have to hear it again :-/ He made some crazy noises yesterday at Denali (yeah, he/she stopped by again) and… I also hope I don’t have to hear those again. Ha. But I will make a video if it happens 😉

We’ve seen deer in our yard a couple times and I love it every time. They’re so graceful. Though I think they ate the vegetables I tried to grow one year :(. Our cats are very confused by the deer.

    • kilax says:

Yeah, I’ve been thinking if we have a garden it will never make it!

My friend asked me if Data thought the deer were giant squirrels. Ha! How would they know what they are?!

  6. Joanna says:

We have deer in our yard all the time and my daughter says “deer, deer!”. She also sometimes says it when there is no deer, but she really does have a good eye and can spot them in the woods behind our house even when I don’t see them at first!

  7. Karen says:

I love to watch them, but when you start a garden you are going to need a big fence lol

    • kilax says:

Right?! And we’d have to have the fence dug low to keep out the rabbits!

I am actually not sure how well a garden would do since we have so much shade. But it would be lovely to have one! I LOVE fresh green beans!

I love seeing deer and coyotes, etc.! It makes me happy that I live in an area with so much open land. They are a pain when it comes to trying to keep a garden, hostas, trees, etc, though. We have to spray our weeping mulberry and our hostas to keep the deer from eating them. It’s frustrating at times. SO many critters eat from our garden, we hardly ever get to harvest anything 🙂

I’m always amused when people get overly excited seeing deer since they’re, like, giant woodland squirrels. (Not saying you are overly excited. I’m thinking about this one time I went camping and this guy in the site next to ours kept making a big deal out of seeing deer in Virginia.)

Do you have any coyotes in the area? There were some in CU, but I’m not sure if they’re up in the CHI suburbs too.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! My friend also called them giant squirrels!

We do have coyotes out here! I heard them cackling the other night. So Data will be staying indoors 😉
