Random Thoughts Thursday 101

  • Freddie and Bill seem to be conditioned to the sound of the dump cart – they hear it coming and think I am coming with food! Which, I usually am, but last night I was actually using the dump cart to clear out logs and brush from around the pond. But they came running up, anyway. Sorry, guys! Luckily, I was able to empty out a feeder for them. They must be STARVING. Ha ha.

Not food

Also, not food (you can barely see the cart, ha!)

  • I was unprepared for how sad I would feel, cutting down a few trees, even though we talked about it, and we want a bigger clearing by the pond (and need it for some of the fountain equipment) … and have a LOT more trees on our property. Sigh. It’s the nature girl in me. I better get used to it though – we’ll have to take down more in the future to make our land a bit healthier (not enough light is getting to the forest floor).

Lots of trees

  • This year is the first time I’ve made time to run on “Global Running Day” (which is always the first Wednesday in June, and previously called “National Running Day”). For years, I’ve been in the office every Wednesday, and not made the time to run with the hours commuting. But my team switched our required office day this year (it changes every other week) and it was easier to fit a run in on the “holiday” this year, because I was working from home! I think these made up holidays are a bit hokey (National Donut day is tomorrow!), but I do like starting my month off with a run! May was crap (workout-wise) and I am determined to make June better.
  • Damn though, my June schedule is getting NUTSO. Someone asked me when I was free for a meeting (outside of work) and I had two dates to give them… out of the whole month. And now one of those is no longer available. Eek. How about July?
  • My ankles are sore from unclipping out of my bike pedals on their own from my fall. Ouch! You can’t see the bruise/swollen-ness too well in this photo… but you can see my ridic tan line! Ha!

I see the bruise! Dang, ow!

Wow, you do have a lot of trees! How big is your property?

  2. Ouch that bruise looks nasty, I hope it clears up quickly. Hopefully it hasn’t swollen too much internally.
I didn’t run yesterday ๐Ÿ™ its too frickin hot!!
It does suck cutting trees but maybe you could investigate some scrubs or plants for the pond/surrounds (that you aren’t clearing) that would be good for bees etc. Like i think some types of plants will mop up heavy metals etc from water making it good for keeping fish (if u want to).

I am feeling miserable running in the 60s/70s with humidity, so I don’t know how you are doing it there! Props to you!

Yeah, we’ll have to look in to all that! I am hoping we’ll get to planting things next year or the year after. We have a lot of research to do about all that stuff, still! ๐Ÿ™‚ It would be fun to have fish in the pond though ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Erin says:

That’s quite the bruise! And on the inside your ankle, too. Is it from the bike hitting it? I actually had to take a good chuck of the winter off bike riding (on the trainer, of course) because I strained my ankle when I fell while bouldering and it hurt to unclip. I hope yours clear up soon!

    • kilax says:

I am wondering the bike did hit it when I fell and that is what caused me to pop out of the pedals?

Oh man! Silly finicky ankles!!! I can see it hurting to unclip after that – it’s a very specific and not commonly used motion!

      • Erin says:

Also, I have to comment on my horrendous typos in my initial comment. Oh, wow.

Anyway, yeah, your bike hitting it probably did cause it to pop off the pedal. Not sure which is better: a bruise and sore ankles or being stuck to your bike after you fall. It’s kind of like falling while skiing and being stuck in the skis!

        • kilax says:

Ha ha! I figured it all out ๐Ÿ™‚

Good point! I think it’s better I clipped out? And didn’t have the bike bounce as much? Ha, mostly because I don’t want to damage my bike too much – I gave it something nice and soft to land on. Ha ha hahahaha.

That’s so cute that the ducks come to see you, even if they just want something haha. I think you’ve said this, but are they “somebody’s” ducks or just the neighborhood’s ducks that happen to live in the area?

I agree that the “X day” days are kind of hokey. I prefer to do what I want, when I want! Although, sometimes you get free stuff on national ___ day, so I guess I’m okay with that.

    • kilax says:

I think they belong to that house we walked by with all the chickens ๐Ÿ™‚

LOL! I DO WANT I WANNA!!!!! I guess what makes me nuts about it is that then EVERYONE is talking about it, and I am annoyed when everyone is saying the same shit cause that is not entertaining for me! But, there were def free donuts at places today, and Steven drove to MKE to get some vegan ones, so YAY!

  5. Chaitali says:

I do see that bruise ๐Ÿ™ It looks painful. I hope it heals quickly! And I love that overhead shot. That is a lot of trees ๐Ÿ™‚

    • kilax says:

I hope so too! I accidentally rolled a medicine ball in to it this am. Ouch!

So many! I hope we never have a horrible storm that causes a tree to fall on our house and damage our expensive to maintain clay tile roof! LOL

  6. Karen says:

Awww, you do need to thin a few trees, but that is sweet it bugs you. Plant some more controllable bushes around for each one you cut ๐Ÿ™‚ or maybe knock out roses or something easy to maintain…
How did the name of Running Day change?? I ran too lol then forgot to post the pic I took….genius lol

    • kilax says:

We definitely need to come up with an “easy to maintain” plan! Right now the growth is out of control! ๐Ÿ™‚ We can’t even walk in to our woods!

I have no idea – just noticed it was different this year!

  7. I’m pretty sure this year was the first time I actually ran on Running Day haha. I don’t know why I haven’t in the past–I must’ve had some conflict or another–but I was proud of myself for actually running this year. And while most of these national holidays are silly, nonsense things, National Donut Day is actually a legit thing from the 1930s! http://centralusa.salvationarmy.org/metro/donutdayhistory/ Not that most people probably use the day to donate to the Salvation Army, but still, it has a little more cred than all the other national “holidays,” I’d say. I actually saw some people from the Salvation Army downtown with boxes to accept donations (like the red buckets at Christmas, except boxes. And without bells. And in June. But for the same organization hahaha). Interesting, huh?

    • kilax says:

That IS interesting! I had no idea! And like you said, I also doubt most people use this holiday to donate to Salvation Army. They probably think it’s just another bogus holiday ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Mica says:

I would also be stressed about the fry situation when doing take-out. Were the fries still good? I feel like they’d get soggy from condensation in the box, and then I’d be stressed about getting them home fast enough!

    • kilax says:

The fries weren’t as awesome as eating in the restaurant. In fact… I don’t think much take-out survives the drive well, except pizza and maybe Asian food! But the fries tasted good last night, heated up in the oven.
