Random Thoughts Thursday 126

  • The race I am doing in Iowa in April does expanded age group awards for larger divisions. My age group goes six awards deep! I wonder what color (or metal?) the awards are after bronze? I entered the Athena division, which is what I did the last time I did this race (and won it).

  • This week, I learned something new and exciting about the car I have been driving for almost ten years – there’s rear windshield wiper fluid! I can clean off the back window from INSIDE the car! Ha ha. How I missed this over ten years, no idea. I am thankful Steven reminded me of it. Now is the time of year to use it.
  • I’ve been on and off Instagram for years. I couldn’t find a way to make it work for me – to be interesting and not just another social media thing that makes me stabby. But I figured it out – to mostly follow people I know, and only a few businesses and celebrities. There are a few things I don’t get though – why am I getting so many follow requests from people I don’t know (why do they want to follow me when my page is set as private and they can’t see anything I post?)? And why do people post the exact same thing on Instagram and Facebook (maximum exposure? and for people who aren’t on both? (like me, since I only started using it again late last year, ha ha!))?
  • Gina is doing a trail race in two weeks, so I ordered her some Dirty Girl Gaiters. When I was checking out, I didn’t see where I could mark it as a gift or say it was from me, so in the special instructions area, I asked if they could write a note for me, and they did! And it was hand-written and they even put a little heart by my name! Stuff like this is simple and easy for business to do, but it really makes clients like me happy that they took the time to read my request and accommodate it.

  • I keep having dreams that I wake up past the time I am supposed to be teaching a class. I will forever be paranoid about being on time!
  • We rarely see animated movies in the theater – not our thing. But, I do like to watch them at home, when they come to Netflix. I watched Zootopia last week and thought it was cute, and even downloaded the theme song!

You do not have to worry about colors past bronze in your age group 😝 I put the exact same thing on both because I never intended to use fb for anything more than getting race discounts but ended up with a couple of friends on there. Instagram is my favorite. Sometimes I think private accounts just make people curious, nosey parkers 🙂

      LOL! 😉

Ahh, gotcha! Ha, and that is why I made it private – so people wouldn’t be nosy. I guess I need to figure out what I am doing, because my handle is my redirect url for this site, which implies it’s open, but I am kind of treating it as private. Hmm. I am still figuring it out!

Whoa, 6 AG awards?! I want to run that race! 😉

My insta and FB are linked, but I only occasionally post stuff to FB. It is because a lot of my friends aren’t on both (but since I use FB less and less, I don’t really bother posting to it that often).

Aww, the hand-written note is a nice touch! And it almost looks like your blog font.

I have that dream EVERY Thursday night/Friday morning. I wake up several times and worry that I’ve overslept and missed your class 🙁

      That’s awesome, right? 🙂

I thought that was probably it (why people post on both). Which is ironic cause back in the day someone wanted me to be on insta to follow their stuff that they refused to put on FB! LOL!

That is not a dream. Missing my class is a NIGHTMARE 😀

What is your Instagram name? I am KierstenDawn if you want to follow me!

  4. I don’t have Instagram, so I could be wrong in my guess here, but I get random followers on Twitter every now and again, and I would say that almost every single one of them either turns out to be a musician in some capacity (and by “musician” I mean “someone who makes music, but definitely is not at all famous for doing so, at least at this stage in their career) or a company that seems to be about as popular as the musicians that follow me. In both of those cases, I assume they’re following me in the hopes that I’ll follow them back, thus increasing their reach and social media ~influence~. I’ve never followed anyone back who used that approach, but I’m sure some people do, which probably makes it a mildly effective marketing strategy. Even if I don’t follow them back, at least now I’ve heard their name, so that also helps from a marketing perspective. I would guess those sorts of people use the same approach on Instagram – it’s less that they’re interested in you, and more that they’re interested in getting you to know them. But I could be wrong! Maybe you have a lot of secret admirers who want to see all your pictures! Haha.

I am guessing it’s like what is happening to you on twitter, only, it’s just regular people who want to reach more people. But… I am not on instagram to “build an audience” (or “brand” LOLOLOLOL) and want to connect with people I know so… that doesn’t work for me right now.

I’ll get a notice that some stranger is following me on Instagram, and I’ll check them out – if they’re a knitter, or a runner, they can stay, but otherwise, I block them. I don’t want a ton of followers, anyway. I suspect people link their FB and Insta accounts but that seems weird to me because why would you post something twice? And if you comment on Insta, but don’t comment on FB, will they think you’re being rude? Ugh, too many games go along with social media!

    • kilax says:

How do you block someone? I have been wondering about that! I don’t want a lot of followers, either.

LOL! That is what I wonder – if I like on insta, do I have to when I see it on FB, too? LOL

  6. Amy says:

I am not on Instagram but I love your name for it!

  7. Mica says:

Maybe the people who are requesting to follow you in IG read your blog. It could also be a marketing thing–follow someone to get them to check out your profile full of products or something.

The handwritten note for the gaiters is so nice. I always love when I purchase something online and get a handwritten or personalized note. Good luck to Gina, I’m sure she’ll get good use out of her new gaiters!

    • kilax says:

That url (kimhastheruns) does redirect to here, but I am not sure how anyone would have it to link the two together! I think it is just marketing shit. And people who wants lots of followers to make them feel good about themselves.

I really appreciated it! I hope Gina has fun at the race!

I loved Zootopia as well. We ended up buying the Blu-Ray-DVD-digital combo pack and now it’s on the iPad and Apple TV to watch whenever. Such a great movie.
