Another reminder!

By , April 17, 2017 12:19 pm

So soon? Crazy!

I was scrolling through my Instagram recommended feed this weekend and clicked on a picture and was really disappointed by the text, which was that person making fun of another person they saw working out during their workout.

Sigh.

It really bugs me when people on social media* make fun of other people (strangers) they see working out (or doing anything!), and ESPECIALLY if they’ve included a picture of them. I know annoying things happen and it feels good to vent about it and have other people agree, but it’s just NOT COOL.

If what’s happening is a real issue of safety, or someone is heavily violating gym etiquette, get an authoritative figure involved.

Otherwise, I don’t want to read** about someone who does xyz too slow, has bad form, sweats too much, looks stupid in their gym clothes, and so on and so on. Unless it’s about how you’re helping them, focus on you! And support the other people who are out there trying to get healthy, even if they are annoying AF!

*Just do it offline! Vent to a friend!
**Ha ha, so don’t read it, right? I don’t – when I see stuff like this, I usually skip it. I just happened to see this on Instagram!

Yeah, that is annoying! No need to do that.

  2. Beth says:

I so agree. Plus a huge invasion of privacy if they have posted a picture of someone without their consent. Hearkens back to the Dani Mathers issue (Playboy model who body shamed someone at her gym)… she got in big trouble for it. So aside from it being a not nice thing to do, it could be illegal. 🙁 Let’s be supportive of someone going after their fitness goals, right? <3

    • kilax says:

Yes – I immediately thought of her doing that! Gosh, that was horrible. 🙁

And yes to being supportive and kind. This type of judgement is what makes people not want to work out at gyms or outside.

There’s a lot of this with strength training. While I agree that people boasting about squats with poor form can be irritating, it doesn’t affect you/me/anyone else, so I try to ignore it. Also, those kinds of posts make working out seem so intimidating for newcomers! I tend to hide those posts on Instagram in the hopes that the algorithm will eventually figure out I don’t want to see them.

    • kilax says:

Ahh, I need to learn how to do that on Instagram! Although, it’s not even from people I follow!

And that stuff is definitely irritating. I think it would be odd if we didn’t get irritated with other people! But… I just hate that it’s so normal in our society now, to immediately go to social media to vent about stuff. If we don’t post it there, did it not actually happen?!

Wow, that’s just mean. Whenever I see someone who is new, very overweight or struggling at the gym, I admire them for having the courage to do it anyway. A gym is sometimes a very judgemental place to be.

  5. Chaitali says:

Ugh, that’s horrible 🙁 These types of barriers are part of the reason that it’s so hard for people to start a work out routine. I’ve definitely complained about people at the gym but it’s more because they’re wearing so much perfume I feel like I’m choking or they don’t wipe down the equipment.

    • kilax says:

Exactly 🙁 Although, I guess these people complaining online might be nice in person?!

Those things would bug me too! I’d just vent to a friend and not on my blog or instagram or whatever 😉

  6. Maggie says:

WTF? If you don’t have anything nice to say … broadcast it on social media?? Or, you know, be an adult and keep your opinions to yourself.

  7. Xaarlin says:

What’s especially upsetting about this “shaming” is that it’s adults doing it and not punk teenagers. The group think is strong online and seeing people get sucked into it makes me wonder why they have no integrity or ethics- yet proclaim they are holier than thou online. Because god forbid someone comment on their running or pace… I don’t understand how social media became the dumping ground of rcomplaining and shaming. GTFO. I guess it’s easy to hide behind a keyboard.

    • kilax says:

Yeah. It makes me sad to see adults doing this. 🙁 Grow up, seriously.

It is SO easy to say something online. I wonder how much worse it will get in upcoming years.
