Random Thoughts Thursday 171

  • I finished Into the Wild, then rewatched the movie version of it this week (I wrote about the movie when I first watched it – my thoughts in that post are still true!). I enjoyed the book, and took a quick break after reading it to read the fiction book Friendship, then started The Wild Truth last night. I can already tell The Wild Truth is going to give a lot more insight in to the McCandless childrens’ actual relationship with their parents.
  • I did a quick day trip to Cincinnati yesterday, for work. I was with coworkers I like, but man, being around the same people all day and not getting any time to myself is VERY challenging for me. Situations like that don’t help this feeling! I found myself cherishing alone time in the bathroom, and being excited when they all went to the Pre✓ line in the airport and I stood in regular security “by myself.” I’ll be traveling more for work (my team now inspects some of the new furniture installations in our six state region, although, yesterday’s meeting was for a construction project) so I’ll likely get Pre✓ soon.
  • I got myself a treat at the airport (and used a Starbucks giftcard from my snis)! I typically only get Starbucks mugs for places I’ve been to, and I’ve been to Kentucky so many times for work. It’s not a state in my region, but I’ve flown there to get to Indiana and Ohio, and spent time there.

  • Ha. Xaarlin specifically wrote a comment on my Sunday training post to be careful NOT to give myself frostbite while icing my leg, and what did I do that exact night?! Doh.

  • DST starts this Sunday! I wish we’d just stay on it the whole year. Losing that hour of sleep messes me up for more than a week to come! Prepare for more withdrawn, quiet Kim!

  1. I could not agree more about wishing we’d stay on DST year-round. Actually, I don’t really care which one we stick with–Daylight Savings Time or standard time–so long as we stick with one of them and be done with it. I think this whole spring forward/fall back stuff is nonsense. (Perhaps I should move to Arizona, where they agree with me and don’t observe it!) I don’t actually have any data on this, so maybe I’m totally mistaken, but I’ve got to assume that office buildings account for a pretty substantial portion of nationwide energy consumption, and it’s not like they turn the lights off because it’s sunny outside. The lights are going to be on for 12 hours a day (or however long the building is open) regardless of whether the sun rises at 6 or 7, or sets at 5 or 6. I don’t know. It all just seems really dumb to me, and I’m bitter that I’m going to lose an hour of sleep over it on Sunday (though I *am* looking forward to not running in the dark after work anymore. That’ll be a welcome change.)

There are so many reasons not to go back and forth, energy waste being one of them. I wonder if all the states will ever wise up and pick one and stick with it! The only good thing (for most people) IS the light in the evenings, but that just makes me feel all odd and lazy at first! Ha!

did you know more people have heart attacks on the week they change the time…should just leave it alone.
It is very overwhelming to be around people all day long. Glad you got a few stolen minutes to yourself 🙂

That mug is so cool! I’m like you, I don’t buy the Starbucks mugs if I’m just passing through (which is why I don’t have any of the super sweet Colorado mugs…I was only in the airport, that doesn’t count in my book).

    • kilax says:

It’s good we do that, or our collections would be A LOT bigger 😉 Although I bet the CO ones are gorgeous! Guess you better go there for realsies!

That travel day sounds so intense! I hope you don’t have a ton of those coming up (but yay for PreCheck).

How many of those Starbucks mugs do you have? Do you have more than one from a certain city?

    • kilax says:

I hope I don’t either, but I get the feeling I will! I was told yesterday about a new project in Jeffersonville, IN… but I get to fly in to Louisville for it, so yay?

Gosh, I think I have 8-12 of them. Playa del Carmen was the first one I got. I also have Kansas City, Texas, Dallas, Ohio, Alaska, Kentucky, Michigan, Pittsburgh, and New York. I have Seattle and Alabama (I think?), but they are in their boxes and not used since I haven’t been there. I don’t have Illinois, Wisconsin, or Chicago. Ha. Definitely getting CA when we come!

They’re super commercial, but I love the designs and that they remind me of places I’ve traveled. Steven is going to build a shelf to display them at some point!
