The third weekend in March

Creative title, right? Gosh, March sure is long!

I had a short, but blissful, weekend!

Steven got a hankering for a homemade cookie on Saturday, so he made some Sunday evening!

On Friday afternoon I got a sports massage, then went to Aldi (my first trip of two there this weekend, grrr). That night, I saw Bobbi’s daughter’s play. I was impressed! To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from a middle school play, but I am pretty sure their acting, costumes, lighting, and stage surpassed anything I did in high school theater.

The play was Cobweb Dreams, which was a take on a portion of A Midsummer’s Night Dream (which I wasn’t familiar with but read about after the show). The story was about the faeries that live in the enchanted forest; particularly, about the fairy Cobweb, who felt like she didn’t belong in her group of faeries (lady-in-waiting faeries, I think), and wondered if she belonged in any of the other fairy groups in her tribe (woodland faeries, water faeries, flower faeries, etc.). She was thinking about leaving them all to join a different tribe all together.

The story had great themes: self acceptance, sense of belonging, group dynamics (how to get along with everyone even if they aren’t your best friend), and appropriate and NOT appropriate pranks/teasing. I thought those were great lessons for this age group (and let’s be real, every age). I’m glad I went! Like I said, I was impressed and entertained. Now I want to see A Midsummer’s Night Dream!

I ran Saturday morning, then Jen, Troy, and Declan came over so we could go to HuHot! Oh, HuHot, how I love thee. I had been thinking about what I was going to put in my stir fry all week and it did not disappoint!

Not sure why I took a photo of my food hanging OFF the table, wtf, Kim

I wore green to make sure I didn’t get pinched, but that was the extent of my St. Patrick’s Day celebrating!

Looks like the “hanging things off a ledge” photo trend lasted all day, wtf…

We hung out with Jen, Troy, and Declan a bit at our house after lunch, then I finished The Wild Truth and took a short nap.

Saturday night was chill. We considered watching The Shape of Water to continue our Oscar-nominated movie watching spree (we’ve recently watched Darkest Hour, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and I, TonyaGet Out and Icarus were the only we had seen pre-Oscars!), but ended up watching Battlestar Galatica.

On Sunday I ran (surprise surprise), then did errands after lunch. I missed a few things at Aldi, hence trip #2. Eyeroll – I hate being inefficient. I also went to another store, and to the library to return a few things. I completely forgot the library isn’t open on Sundays, and was disappointed I didn’t get to look for something new to read! Wah!

After errands, I took the cats out on the balcony,

took a short nap, went on a walk with Steven, then he made cookies and dinner (I sous chefed),

and… we watched more Battlestar Gallactica!

It’s obvious I need other hobbies beyond exercising, reading, and watching movies/shows. But the fact that I am feeling more social is good! Long-time readers will recall I get the “spring blues” – I struggle when it gets warmer and the days get longer. It makes me moody. I can feel that seeping in, especially on Sunday, when it was so warm out. I know it’s odd, and I fight it every year. Fingers crossed this is one of the better years (last year surprisingly was because we had no winter – so I didn’t have a winter to mourn ending).

You should definitely see A Midsummer Night’s Dream! I remember going to see the 1999 version of it on my 18th birthday (BIG PLANS ha ha!), and I generally like Shakespeare’s works. The play about the faeries sounds neat and agree, good lessons for kids!

OMG Steven’s homemade chocolate chip cookies… so good!

I hope you can keep your spring blues at bay this year! Spring isn’t exactly my favorite season either, but I do appreciate that it means clear, ice-free sidewalks to run on 🙂

I would really like to! I will definitely have to read about it before I go, to make sure I understand it all, but I enjoy the other Shakespeare stuff I know, so I bet I will like it.

I thought you had tried these! Gawd, they turned out so good. Turns out there is SOMETHING about actually measuring stuff when baking. Huh, who would have thunk it! Shall I save some of the batter for when you’re here?!

I hope so too. I really want to get past this. And yes! I appreciate that too, and when the trails aren’t covered in inches of snow!

Yep he made them for us for one of our bad movie nights last year, and I have the recipe! Making more on Friday would be good, unless you want to bake something new? 🙂

Wanting to get past it helps! I used to get SAD really bad every winter, and part of the problem was just me dreading that I’d feel that way every year. I stopped doing that once I started running and realizing how awesome winter was for that, so it helped me look forward to winter! So another instance of changing your thinking going a long way 🙂

We should do the cookies! No more baking for me! Ha. I really need to cut back on sugary treats 🙂 (Steven took all the cookies in to the warehouse today.)

That is a good tip! I need to find something to look forward to in this season (not of life, actual season).

It’s so nice that you can let the cats out on the balcony! My friend has a catio attached to a cat flap to let his out but not run wild…it’s pretty cool. I like the socks. I wonder where the pinching thing came from? We don’t do that in Ireland.

    ::whispers:: Knitting…

But seriously, nothing wrong with your hobbies! Did Steven bake those cookies? Because just that ball of dough looks good enough to eat as is, YUM.

I know, right? I almost thought about getting some washcloth yarn just to make those! I have this big project for a beautiful shawl and I am kind of scared to start it!

Thanks 🙂 And he did!!! Gawd they are so good.

      • Shelley B says:

I’ve heard that you should have three knitting projects going at all times – one that you can knit without thinking (like a washcloth), one that you can knit while watching most TV shows (like a hat or socks – not a ton of concentration), and one that you have to pay attention to (like a shawl or a sweater) – so hey, get started with the washcloth and then start the shawl when you’re feeling fresh. And FWIW, just about every “pay attention” project that I’ve done? I usually end up starting over at least once, once I really figure out what I’m doing. Perfectionist tendencies, I haz them.

        • kilax says:

That makes SO MUCH sense. I should definitely get that going! Or pick up one of my really old projects!

And hey, it would be weird if you didn’t start those pay-attention projects over, right? You’d be halfway through and wonder what you missed! Ha!

  4. I hope your spring blues aren’t too bad this year. I’ve been getting the winter blues ever since I graduated from college (and possibly during college as well – I know I never liked the beginning of the spring semester, but I was always busy enough to not really bother getting to the bottom of why I felt down), and this past winter was particularly rough. Last Sunday felt like Christmas to me, finally getting daylight back again (though I had been noticing improvement in my mood in the week or two leading up to springing forward – and I will admit that I’m not at all pleased about not having light in the morning for the time being!). Since I know for me, increased daylight helps my mood immensely, I’m wondering when your spring blues go away, or if it’s predictable at all? I swear, my winter blues are like clockwork: the start as soon as the Christmas decorations come down, and continue until we start getting about 11 hours of daylight per day again (assuming, of course, said daylight isn’t hidden behind the clouds!), so I’m curious if yours follows a similar pattern. I hope this spring isn’t too difficult for you!

    • kilax says:

It makes me very happy to hear that you are feeling better and that it started about a week or two ago, yay! That is a long time to feel so crummy, after the decorations come down 🙁 Have you tried all the common things to deal with it (the daylight lamp, etc.)?

Mine usually lasts pretty close to the summer solstice which is freaking HORRIBLE and ridiculous! And by that time I’ve let my body go to crap and the rest of the summer is meh. NOT THIS YEAR I SWEAR!!!! Ha.

  5. Mica says:

You had so much going on this weekend (Let’s be honest, every weekend!). You had a good mix of the normal (running, errands, cooking with Steven) and the different (the play) plus social and chill time. I think that makes for a good weekend, provided you have the energy for it!

I’ve never heard of HuHot. Is it a place where you make your own stir-fry? I want to try it!

    • kilax says:

Yeah, this is my ideal weekend… maybe with only one social gathering though? Ha ha ha, I kid, I kid. I need to get out and see people, I just can’t do that ALL weekend, every weekend 🙂

Yes, that’s the kind of place it is! Gah, I love it. I love loading my bowl with my fave veggies and tofu and soaking them in sauce AHH SO DELICIOUS!!!!!!!! Do you have a place like HuHot there?
