Random Thoughts Thursday 172

  • I hate talking about material things (ick), but I have to mention, I got a new phone this week and it’s made a world of difference. Mine was three years old, slooooooooooooow AF, and not reliable as a phone anymore. So, yay for the upgrade, and no longer wondering if my phone is going to work (at all), or randomly die.

  • This is the tenth year of the Wisconsin Marathon and Half Marathon, and will be my tenth year running the half! The race is commemorating ten year runners by giving them “a special, Wisconsin Marathon blanket” (in quotes because I pulled that from an email they sent last week, ha). Neat!
  • I don’t know what my goal (if any) will be for the Wisconsin Half Marathon. It’s four weeks after my 5K, so I’ll see how I feel post 5K and decide.
  • Did anyone read the Outside Magazine article Why Caffeine Might Not Make You Faster (pdf here)? Apparently what version (AA, AC, or CC) you have of the gene CYP1A2 affects how your body metabolizes caffeine. Generally, if you metabolize it faster (AA), you go faster. If you metabolize it slower (CC), you go slower. Interesting stuff! I get my caffeine from tea and chocolate, and wonder what a cup of coffee would do for me!
  • Also from Outside Magazine, did anyone read the article about elite marathoner Jordan Hasay (pdf here)? I love getting a glimpse of how elites train, and I have to say, her typical day (circled in red below, with yellow highlights of the things that sound extra fantastic) sounds awesome to me!

  • This post needs more cat pictures!

Ha, I brought my laptop in to the kitchen to work standing for a while and Khali wasn’t sure about me disturbing her slumber! Such RBF. So cute. Very sleep.

Cut the running out of that girls schedule, and SIGN ME UP.

Mine dies randomly. I’m hanging in there as long as I can though because I feel like I’ve not managed to hold onto my last couple of phones very long.
Apart from the 100 mile weeks that sounds amazing. 5,000 calories whaaat!!! I’m not even sure I could stay asleep for that long but I guess if I ran 100 miles/week I’d be falling asleep all the time.
    Khali so cute!!

How old is it? I am sorry you are having ish too!

I was surprised by the 5K calories too! I bet you could sleep that long if you really worked at it 😉

      Thanks! 🙂

  3. I’ll be at the Wisconsin Marathon again this year, doing my usual tent/packet pickup manning. Darn sense of loyalty! Haha. That’s cool about the blanket!

I read that article about Jordan Hasay and really enjoyed it. I won’t lie, I am a bit skeptical about Nike Oregon Project athletes, just with all the accusations against Salazar and the mind-boggling things his athletes have done recently, particularly Galen Rupp and Jordan Hasay at the marathon distance. I want to believe it’s all legit, but I’d be lying if I said I weren’t at all suspicious. Regardless, anytime I hear about an elite athlete’s day-to-day life, I am RIDICULOUSLY jealous. I would love–LOVE–for my only obligation every day to be to exercise. I’d finally have time for all those activities I feel like I’m “supposed” to be doing to be a better runner! And all that time to sleep…! Yes please! I want all of that with a steady income and none of the pressure to perform that comes with being an elite athlete. Is that so much to ask?! 😛 Hahaha

That IS quite the sense of loyalty! I will stop by to say hi if I have time!

I am in the same boat. I really really really want to believe it’s legit too, because it would be amazing to have Americans performing like this, and only taking medication they actually NEED.

That would be the life!!! Nike/Asics/whomever needs to do a contest where we can apply for them to sponsor us to live that life for six months and see what happens. It could be a documentary!

Sometimes you just need a new phone! My phone is almost 3 years old and also has slowed down quite a bit and the charger port doesn’t work anymore so thank goodness for external batteries and charger! I’m holding out on getting a new one because expensive!
I enjoyed reading that Jordan Hasay article! Her typical day was interesting and I also enjoyed reading about how she has struggled professionally but is now overcoming those struggles.

    • Alyssa says:

Also I could use that much sleep and naps every day 🙂

    • kilax says:

Gawd, how much they cost is RIDIC! A friend was able to get me a discount, which I appreciated. I hope yours continues to work with the external batteries and charger!

I liked reading about her struggles too. It blew my mind that they would have dropped her!!! Wouldn’t that much sleep and naps be amazing?!

So…being a professional runner seems like you get to be a glutton (5,000 calories??), a sloth (all that sleep!) and, well, a runner. I guess it all works out – she makes it sound pretty appealing, until I think about running 100 miles per week – LOLNOPE.

I had to get a new phone because mine only had 16GB of memory, which was horrible for a picture taker like me. I went all in, got all the memory available, plus the dual lens camera. LOVE IT. And I’ll never need another phone again, right? HAH. Still, I’m glad you got a new one – they really are slick.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha, that pesky little detail about the running!!!!

I noticed you got a new phone (I could tell it was a dual lens iphone because of some of the portrait mode stuff you posted a couple of weeks ago), yay! You probably won’t need a new one for quite some time… did you get 256GB?! Or more?!

  6. Mica says:

Oh man, I know that I wouldn’t want to be a professional athlete, but that does sound nice, doesn’t it? I think the I am most envious of the ten hours of sleep (which I could do, I just don’t prioritize it as much as I’m sure she has to!). Which part of her daily routine would you want?

I’m glad you got a new phone!

    • kilax says:

If you were going to get ten hours of sleep, which part of life would you prefer to miss out on – night time or daytime? It would be nightime for me (8 pm bedtime here I come!).

I want all the miles and all the eating, of course.

Me too! Thanks for your suggestion and help! 😉
