Dreaming of dresses*

By , April 2, 2009 6:32 am

It’s happening again. When I walk past Ann Taylor** on my way to work, when I read InStyle, when I run an errand at Sears during lunch… I am noticing dresses and find myself wanting to try them on!

I finally did go to White House | Black Market in November to check out that dress I had been eying. I was with my mom and grandma, and we were at Water Tower Place in Chicago. We went in to the store and I feel in love with every dress, but tried nothing on. I didn’t need one. I just wanted one!

Of course, my mom didn’t understand this, so for the rest of the shopping trip, she kept pointing out dresses to me, then bought me a very pretty one for Christmas. Love my mom.

So, now it’s happening again. I see dresses I want to try on. I usually resist the urge for two reasons – I have no need for a new dress, and I have very muscular legs… that don’t always look so great in a dress. Plus, I do have some cute dresses at home already (example one and two)! They may be too big for me now, but I should at least try them on before I go shopping.

Or maybe I should just say “what the hell” and try some new dresses on anyway. It can’t hurt. And there’s that wedding we’re going to in July…

Here’s a small sample of some of the dresses catching my eye now:

Hey, does that one in the middle remind you of Miranda’s dress from the Sex in the City movie?

I really love black dresses and also ones with big floral prints!

*Day dreaming only. My actual dreams last night were about a client. I won’t go into details, but if I am up and can’t sleep because I am dreaming about a client… that’s not a good sign.
**Someone, please explain the difference between Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor LOFT. Diane…?

I LOVE the 3rd one from the bottom! Very modern and chic. Actually I love the one right above it too. Aaaaand now I want to go dress shopping. Thanks ๐Ÿ˜›

Ann Taylor Loft is cheaper and more casual on the whole, I think (even though they have some damn cute dresses!). Actually, here: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/771955/ann_taylor_vs_ann_taylor_loft_what.html

  2. Mica says:

Ooh, cute dresses! I have the same problem–no need for a dress, but I WANT one. I say get one…or two.

  3. javaqueen says:

Girl, don’t let some muscular legs slow you down or stop you- I’m sure your legs are beautimous! Since when are muscular legs a problem? I’d sure wear dresses if I had a reason- so girly and fresh! GO FOR IT!

  4. diane says:

Buy dresses! It is your civic duty to stimulate the ecomony!
Plus, I always end up in a situation where I suddenly need a dress and have to scramble to find when, and dress shopping under the gun just sucks.
I think Ann Taylor Loft is the more casual, (younger, hipper) with Ann Taylor being the more professional and sophisticated…but I’ve never confirmed that.

  5. Dude! It’s summer (almost) so it’s the perfect time to buy and rock out every single one of these dresses. DOOOOOOOOO ITTTTTT!

  6. Christina says:

Did you crawl into my head? I spend Saturday looking for a dress becasue I wanted one and finally found one at White House/Black Market. I have never been there before. So I splurged and got a cute dress a shrug and a floswer pin.

I am afraid it woke up the shopping demon!

  7. i think you should reward yourself for all your hard work and accomplishments!!! go buy a dress or two!!! (the two you already have are really cute though!) and hey, i say rock your muscular legs!!!!
    =^..^=

  8. Christina says:

Oooh sister, I love dresses!! I think your muscular legs will look nice as long as you where a nice heel with it to straighten them out. I really like the first dress you pictured. So pretty!! I need to start looking for dresses too because in the summer I can wear sundresses and sandals to work! ๐Ÿ˜€ I’ll come up and we can go shopping SOON!? ๐Ÿ˜€

As far as I can tell, Ann Taylor Loft is cheaper and a bit more casual. I just bought a dress from there! I have no reason to have a dress, I don’t go anywhere I would need to wear one, but I couldn’t resist because it was just so pretty. Who knows if I will ever wear it, but I bought it anyway.

Those dresses are so pretty! My daughter just got one similar to the bottom one with the blue flowers. I think I could squeeze into it if I wanted to.

I have the same leg issues and never think anything looks good. I have a friend who always complains that her legs have NO muscles so I guess no one is ever really happy with what they have, right?

  10. Erin says:

Ooooh, Ann Taylor dresses. I own three ๐Ÿ™‚

In my previous job, I never wanted to wear a dress because I never knew if I was going to be hauling boxes or large ledger books or shifting files or in a dusty basement or what (I worked as a records manager at a courthouse). Plus, everyone dressed fairly casually. In my current job, though, I get to dress up! As soon as the weather warms up, those three dresses are getting worn to work!

Now, my sexy J.Crew dress? A little too risque for the office. I need to find more fancy places to wear that one.

I really like the middle one that looks exactly like Miranda’s dress, but I fear it would just look like a sack on me since I’m petite. I also like the black and white graphic print one from Ann Taylor.

  11. Alice says:

oh man, i actually NEED to shop for some dresses (4 weddings this summer!!) but have been reasonably good about The Shopping lately, and dont’ want to “awaken the shopping demon,” to quote christina above ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. Sarah says:

I’ve been eyeing dresses too..especially little sundresses that I’ve NEVER been able to wear before. I’m hoping to fit comfortably into something cute by summer.

The ones you posted are beautiful – I particularly like the two at the end with that nice combo of black & blue! So pretty! ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. kilax says:

supersalwa – Thanks for the article! That explained it perfectly. I have never had much luck at one of the stores, but I can’t remember which. I wonder if it was the Loft store? I love that modern, chic print. I love all the geometric stuff that is coming out!

Mica – Okay – but only if YOU do the same! ๐Ÿ˜›

javaqueen – I like to call them my thick tree trunks. I am not sure if they’ll ever even out. But you’re right – what the hell!

diane – I think you are right, after reading that article. I am always dress-less when I need one too! I think I wore the same black dress 20x because I couldn’t find anything better! LAME-O! HEY! Maybe I can wear a dress to your birthday party! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

Fat Bridesmaid – So true! Dresses feel better in the summer!

Christina – I am worried about my shopping demon too! The dress you got sounds really cool. I better go look it up!

CourtneyInControl – Maybe I should reward myself and get one after the half marathon!

Christina – Are you coming out to do that 5K 4/25? We could shop then… yay yay yay?

tori -Maybe we need to come up with something to wear our dresses to. Maybe you could wear yours on your birthday? ๐Ÿ™‚ I see a lot of women’s legs that I like – slim and slender. Maybe they like mine – big and muscular? Ha ha.

Erin – Maybe I could get away with wearing some to work too. It sounds like fun! I think you would have to wear a belt with that dress, like Miranda did!

Alice – Will you use the same one for all 4? That is what I’ve done before. Hee hee. Good luck about letting the demon sleep…

Sarah – Can you wear them at your new job or do you have to wear more practical clothes for working with animals? I love summer sundresses!

  14. sizzle says:

I love dresses. I’d wear them or skirts every day if I could. That last one is so cute (and such a good price!).

  15. aron says:

I looooove dresses too and I have a bunch that dont get worn so I am TRYING not to buy new ones for things this year ๐Ÿ™‚ trying being the key word… love all of those!

  16. Robin says:

Love the dresses. Get at least one!

  17. Nat says:

Those are gorgeous. I need to go dress shopping for summer.

  18. mom says:

Oh, I love that smile in dress #1 that’s your movie star smile.love Mom

  19. kilax says:

sizzle – I can totally picture you rockin’ a skirt of or dress! You always look so cute and feminine ๐Ÿ™‚

aron – Ha ha. I have been doing a lot of trying with buying things lately too. Sometimes it works… sometimes it doesn’t. I had a dream last night that i was looking through all the dresses in my closet. I think I am going to get them out and see what’s in there!

Robin – I think I will, for that July wedding! I cannot wait! I want to buy it now of course. I better wait until I at least know if it is an indoor or outdoor wedding.

Nat – Yay! Tell me what you get! Do a post ๐Ÿ˜€ Hee hee.

mom – Aww, thank you. That IS my big cheesy grin!
