Vegan Cinnamon Rolls

Ready to go into the oven!

This was Steven’s second time making these Vegan Cinnamon Rolls from VeganYumYum. The first time we made them was in November. We had had the recipe printed out for a long time, but check it out – it’s daunting! They’re a lot of work, but TOTALLY worth it!

I wanted to find a Vegan Cinnamon Roll recipe, because as long as I can remember, that is what we’ve eaten in my family* on Christmas morning. And I won’t be with them this year… but I still want my damn Cinnamon Rolls!

Do you have a traditional holiday breakfast meal?

I was not around** to document the first step – mixing the dough, kneading it, then letting it rise. Oops. I did smell the fresh dough though – don’t you just love that smell?

I did get to watch Steven do all the fun parts though: Rolling the dough out and loading it up with butter***…

Spreading the cinnamon/sugar mix on top…

Observing your lazy cat…

Rolling the dough out…

…into a log.

Using some thread to cut the log…

… into the rolls!

Using a well buttered*** dish (ha ha)…

… to put them in.

Whipping up some vegan cream cheese frosting (using Tofutti)…

… and baking them!

Nomming away! (I forgot to take a picture WITH frosting. Duh, Kim.)

Steven made these on Saturday and we let them rise in the fridge overnight. We baked them at our friend’s house Sunday morning. You can also put them in freezer, if you want to make them in advance!

These are SO UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. I love the description of them on VeganYumYum:

If you’re looking for a healthy, low-fat, calorie conscious treat, I can’t help you today. If you’re looking for a recipe that is guaranteed to win over any vegan doubter, guaranteed to please any Cinnabon lover, guaranteed to send any child into a permanent sugar high; these buns are for you.

It’s so true. These are the real deal – melt-in-your-mouth awesome, decadent cinnamon rolls. I’m so happy we found this awesome recipe! Let me know if you try them!

*Mind you, Pillsbury made those.
**Was cleaning the house.
***We used vegan margarine. Thanks for pointing that out, Mica!

Okay, that is one of the recipes in Vegan Yum Yum that I keep flipping to, drooling over, and then leaving because I am so lazy! This might have been the kick in the butt I needed to make them… I’ll let you know if I do 🙂

Ah, I’m really impressed, as always, with Steven’s handiwork! I’m afraid to try baking cinnamon rolls, though I think they’re one of Harrison’s favorite things.

Maybe we can all get together and Steven can give a tutorial.

Did you actually use butter for them? (Vegan?)

We would love to host you the next time you come to Chicago… and want to stay 50 miles away from the city. LOL!

Oops, it is vegan margarine. Thanks for pointing that out! I’ll explain it better in the post.

  7. Brad was totally asking me last weekend if I thought I could make cinnamon rolls since he figured the pilsbury ones are full of crappy fillers. I may (and it really is only may) make these on Christmas day.

Steven is hardcore 🙂 I’m over here procrastinating because I offered to make lemon bars for a get together tonight and now I’m feeling lazy. And those require no kneading or rising or anything 🙂

Yum! My mom makes cinnamon rolls on Thanksgiving and Christmas mornings. I might have to try my hand at homemade this year to give her a break.

Of course, on Christmas morning we have cinnamon rolls at her house, breakfast at my husband’s step-grandfather’s, and two places for lunch (we typically only eat at one, though). Then I don’t eat again for three days because I can’t move and my pants won’t button.

  13. Um whoa, just whoa. I’m 100% full from dinner and am done with food for the day, but I might slap a baby to get my hands on one of those (disclaimer, I’d never actually slap a baby, so yeah…) I’m thinking about trying a vegetarian day once a week starting in the begining of the year 🙂

We do have a traditional breakfast casserole for Christmas morning. It’s bread, sausage, cheese, cream of mushroom soup, eggs, more cheese, more sausage. It’s so freaking num num, it’s good we only have it once a year. My cookie Boulder CO Aunt tried to do a healthy version of it one year… the family revolted.

Those cinnamon rolls look amazing! My mom always makes monkey bread for breakfast on Christmas but my dad doesn’t always make the same thing. Last year he did make cinnamon rolls though! They were delicious!
I woke up to a wonderful smell this morning and was convinced it was cinnamon rolls. It ended up being kiwi banana muffins instead lol.

    Wow! They look so delicious!!

We don’t have any particular breakfast tradition, but I am (as of right this second) thinking it is never too late to start a new tradition. Cinnamon rolls might be the way to go on that. 😉 I am seriously drooling over here.

  22. I made cinnamon rolls this weekend too but those look even better than my rushed ones. My kids had a sleepover this weekend and normally when someone sleeps over, I make cinnamon rolls. Because we were so busy I did not get a chance. In the morning, everyone was so dissapointed so I had to make some. We had them for dinner!
