Sore in the you-know-what

By , June 26, 2010 11:03 pm

We went on a long bike ride yesterday and now certain areas of my you-know-what* are sore. Does anyone have recommendations on a good brand of padded bike shorts** or a good comfortable bike seat?

I have a $10 Amazon giftcard, so that could go toward getting one or the other. I know nothing about biking, so I hope someone has some good tips!

Not sore in that area, but you get the idea
Take my advice – DO NOT google “sore butt” pictures

**Let me know about sizing – I will probably order them online.

Wow, Kim, what a lovely graphic! I have a friend who takes spinning classes and she bought a padded seat that she takes with her. Or just tie a doughnut pillow to your butt. Duct tape would hold it on well. 🙂

Oh tell me about it!! We got me a bike recently, supposedly for me to use to get to the YMCA and back for added exercise plus reducing my carbon footprint (I *hate* how much I use the car in Springfield!) … but two days of just short jaunts (seriously, like 5 blocks or so) had me suffering from the pain (“where the legs meet the butt”), and I’ve not gotten on since (doesn’t help it’s been rainy too) … I looked online for a nice pair of padded bicycle shorts and saw really good ones going for $70 (almost the cost of the bike??? no thanks!) … I do hope you share what you go end up getting/doing, because I need to do something in order to get back on that bike!! :p

Hahahaha. Oh my! This post made me laugh out loud. I feel EXACTLY the same today. I went on a bike ride yesterday and boy.. my behind!!!

  4. When I first started the triathlons I searched all over for a padded seat or shorts or SOMETHING to make it better. I tried a bunch of things and really the only thing that helped much was continuing to ride and being sore and just getting used to it. If you do end up finding something that helps, let me know. It would be nice to know what could have helped!

I’m not sure of what the good brands are for padded shorts/bike seats but I totally feel you on the pain after a long bike ride! They should really design the entire bike better so it’s more comfortable : )

I have a W I D E padded seat and wear bike shorts with enough padding that they feel like Pampers (not that I REALLY know what that feels like) and it seems to make no difference. It’s just time in the saddle I suppose.

Terry Bicycles makes seats with a cutout to give your lady parts a break. I had the older version of the Terry Women’s Liberator X Gel Bicycle Saddle, which is for a road bike. If you have a mountain bike, you might rather have one like this.

I also wear padded shorts, though I don’t like the ones with the heavy pads. Triathlon shorts tend to have really think pads so I don’t feel like I’m wearing a diaper.

I know exactly where you mean. Exactly! I did a spin class Friday, then another one Saturday morning. I was wincing. Someone told me you get used to it. Really! Get used to that.

You would think that having a padded bike seat would do the trick but alas, if you’re going to go on a long bike ride, that is actually worse since it could cause rubbing & chafing. So my saddle is actually hard & narrow.

Now I do have padded shorts. I just walked into Dick’s Sporting Goods and started trying them on. Now I have 3 different pairs, one makes me feel like I have a diaper on but I wear that at the start of my biking season because my saddle bones are not quite up to par and once they get sore & toughened up, then I go for my less padded but still enough that it won’t hurt me shorts.

But it really is just time in the saddle.

honestly, I’ve worn the true biking shorts and hated the way they felt, I guess that they help with chaffing but can’t say I felt a padded difference. I usually try to lift up more often.

i totally bought one of those seat covers that has the foam in it. I’m cheap and didn’t want to throw down the $50 for padded pants so the seat cover worked for me!!
