Homemade Bagels!

Guess what I get to try when I get home (in case the title didn’t give it away)?

Yum. Homemade bagels.

Our bagel quest has not been very successful. Seriously, DON’T get a bagel if you go to NYC. You will be scarred for life (alright, try them, but get some to bring home and put in your freezer). Or you will have to make friends with someone in NYC who will send them to you.

Nearly everyone I tell about our bagel quest asks me “Why doesn’t Steven just make some?” Jeez, what is he, my personal chef/baker? Muah ha ha, I guess so.

Steven was a bit hesitant to start experimenting with bagels, because it took him a long time to perfect his bread recipe, and it was a lot of work. But, the work has begun. We will be eating a lot of bagels in the future until he makes them perfect. And that is fine with me. I have about a gazillion races coming up and could use the carbs.

The annoying thing is, I have to wait until I get home at 8:00 PM to eat a bagel. I have my strengh class tonight. I almost want to skip class just to go home and try one. Maybe toasted? With peanut butter?

And speaking of my strength class, I am not sure if I will sign up for May. I am feeling pretty “meh” about having another weeknight committment. Speedwork starts on May 17th, and will be once a week until sometime in September. I have running club 5K meetings every other week (local friends – mark your calendars for a 5K on August 6th!). And I like to go to the free summer concerts at Independence Grove on Tuesdays in the summer. Last night I went home and didn’ t have to do anything and it felt so nice to just veg out and be a lazy smackaroo.

How many nights a week do you have things scheduled to do outside of the home?

For awhile, it seemed like we had something going on almost every night. Fun things… but I get so drained!

Um…I basically have something to do every night after work if I stick to my work out routine. I take a Nia or Zumba class every day after work if I don’t have a late night at work and sometimes I have therapy or meet friends for dinner too. I am totally over-scheduled, it’s true.

Do you like having something going on each night, or do you wish you had some days to chill at home?

Wow, those look fantastic!! Go Steven!

I try not to schedule too many out of the house things during the week because of all my work. Booo.

Ok….well that’s just mean. Showing us a picture but we don’t get any!

Mmm… I’ve been craving a GOOD bagel all week.

Ah yes, NYC has spoiled me with bagels. Let me know if I need to send you some to hold you over until the recipe is perfected!

I have something scheduled at night 3-4 times for week…but that’s known as work! Otherwise I have running club or try to be social on the other days, although I tend to wish I would make plans more often.

Is there a specific place you like or are they all good? We just tried the Brooklyn Bagel Co.

  8. YUM!!! Those look awesome!

Sooo, how were they?? Do you have some NYC bagels in the freezer with which to do comparative taste tests?

I could have something every night after work if I wanted to. But I feel bad making Jason have to cook if I’ll be home too late to do it so I try to be home in time to make dinner at least a few nights a week.

They were good, but not close to the bagels yet. They were like very yummy chewy dense bread. And I don’t have any to compare to! Gina offered to send some though.

Would you want to have something going on every night? I need at least 1-2 nights at home 🙂

Those bagels look incredible!!! I want one. I would eat it with peanut butter and honey like I did this morning for breakfast. Do you eat honey? Or is it not vegan since it’s made by bees?
Most nights I don’t have any obligations. I guess I’m not against doing things on week nights but I do enjoy my time at home. I sometimes run to the grocery store or out to shop, but I prefer to spend my evenings at home cooking, cleaning up, or hanging out with the fiance/friends.

    • kilax says:

Honey is not vegan, but I do eat it (meaning I don’t avoid things it is in) so I am not technically 100% vegan!

  11. Yay for homemade bagels! 🙂 Gosh, I feel like a busy busy girl after work. It’s usually filled with gym stuff. I try and hit up between 1-3 classes per week, not including outside runs + other activities. I feel like I rarely have a night where I’m not running around.

I really want to learn how to make bread. That’s on my life’s “to-do” list.
As for crazy evening schedules and events, it really comes and goes with me. For a few months, I felt like Michael and I were like the proverbial “ships passing in the night”. He was taking a class twice a week, I was taking a swim class once a week, in addition to fitting in other stuff and work events… It felt like a lot of juggling.
Fortunately, things have REALLY wound down for us. I feel like I can sustain those overly-scheduled moments because of major downtime (summer). That said, we both miss our classes, so that’s a good thing!

I think it is a good to have a few nights a week to just chill out. During a normal week, I usually have dinner at my Mom’s one night, exercise after work one night, and have dinner out with my husband on Friday night.
