Thumb Holes

By , December 11, 2010 9:38 am

I decided to get a new running jacket a few weeks ago (most of mine are cotton and they were getting too sweaty and damp) and ended up with one with thumb holes. Thumb holes weren’t a deciding factor in buying the jacket, but I really like having them!

Usually, on cold days, I tuck my Under Armour top in to my gloves to keep my wrists warm:

The thumb holes add an entire extra layer of protection:

It’s nice, especially since I am running in this now:

And sometimes it’s kind of cold.

I might keep an eye out for tops with thumb holes. I like that you can use them when it’s really cold (15° during Tuesday’s run) or choose not to use them, when it’s warm.

Do you have any tops with thumb holes? Do you like them?

I wonder if sometimes the thumb holes are in the wrong spot – for people with really long arms? Maybe?

That is such a cool jacket! I have never ever seen anything like it….of course, maybe if I exercised or lived in cold weather, I might have. 😉

I do not have any tops with thumb holes but they would be handy to have! We have tons of snow too and are expected to get more tomorrow 🙁

thumb holes ARE a deciding factor for me. i LOVE them. i love them even when I don’t need them! also, even if i’m not using them, they tend to be on shirts with longer sleeves, which i like as well. skirt sports has LOTS of shirts with thumb holes!

I love thumb holes in jackets! They would be a deciding factor for me in buying something, haha.

Katie has the thumb loops on her two Old Navy long sleeve moisture wicking shirts. I think she likes it but I’m not really sure.

  6. Jen says:

I LOVE thumb holes! Whoever invented them was a genius!

I love the idea of thumb holes. I do not currently own anything with thumb holes though. I saw thermal shirts on black friday with thumb holes and I almost got one of those. That jacket is really cool. Love the color.

I just bought a jacket recently with thumb holes, too! I LOVE them. At first they felt a little….funny? But I find myself wearing the jacket even around my house (I’m cheap, so my house is normally cold). 😉

Usually when I try on shirts with thumbholes, it means that the length of the sleeves is just right for my long arms – means extra length than normal though!
(and I see Data made it into the photos of course)

Oh, man, I’ve been hearing about that snow! You and Data look cute. Maybe he needs a jacket with paw holes?

  11. Ayla says:

Nice new shirt!! Very pretty. 🙂

I’ve had a running shirt with thumb holes before and loved it! Unfortunately I don’t know what happened to it and so I’m stuck using a shirt without them. Once you’ve had them, it really sucks wearing a shirt that doesn’t.

  12. Etta says:

    Very cool!

Do you run outdoors all year round or, at some point, do you start running indoors? January and February are pretty cold.

I have another Q for you, but I’m going to send you a FB message.

I run outdoors unless the ground is covered in snow and ice and it is too slippery. Or, the visibility is too bad. I don’t mind the cold. I might run inside if it was below 0.

I will watch for your FB message.

  13. I LOVE thumb holes!! I have two thermal shirts like that, and I was so excited to find them.

I keep meaning to buy shirts with thumbholes since I usually cover my hands with my sleeves anyway!

I am totally still not over the snow from last year yet!!!!

I don’t own any of those shirts with thumb holes but I think it is genius!! I will have to look into that!

  16. Erin says:

I have one top that has thumbholes but the sleeves are kind of stretched out so they don’t work as well as if they sleeves were still tight on my wrists. That looks like a really nice jacket!

  17. Adam says:

I have a brooks jacket with holes and I LOVE them. I have little chicken arms and my wrists always get cold w/out them

  18. Chad says:

I wish this was acceptable for men (Adam!) The only part of me that gets cold in Arizona is the back of my hands. That’s exactly what those longer sleeves cover. The manly solution is a piece of ducktape.

My new running jacket has thumbholes and I love it! The extra layer of protection over gloves is crucial. Your jacket looks awesome!

  20. Bethany says:

My Columbia jacket has thumb holes and i love it! It’s perfect for winter! 🙂

  21. Ren says:

My ski jacket has extra inner sleeves with thumb holes. I like them but find that they are just a boot too small or tight for me and so my hands gets sore between my thumbs and forefingers. Thus, I usually wear them for a while and then pull my thumb out.
