It’s game time

By , December 9, 2007 12:44 pm

All the snow outside has made me feel like staying indoors on the weekends and doing “snowed-in” activities – watching movies, cleaning the house, baking, taking bubble baths, reading books, and playing games…

So I got out Monopoly last night to play. I set up the game board, organized the money, separated the different playing cards, and Steven and I both selected our tokens (Padme and Qui-Jon)… then read the 10-page instruction pamphlet.

Twenty minutes later, after the Monopoly instructions left us confused and tired, we opted to watch Live Free or Die Hard instead of play the game. If I read those instructions correctly, I don’t think I have ever played Monopoly the way you are supposed to. That game is complex! I don’t even understand our own mortgage, and I am supposed to mortgage and keep track of multiple properties?!

Does anyone remember Junior Monopoly – the simplified version of adult Monopoly? I remember playing that with my siblings, and the game would only last us an hour or so. We all had our little tricks – like hiding our money under the board so no one had an idea how much we had until the end. And we made our own rules, such as “not paying a rent for landing in a space unless the landlord remembered to ask.” Ha ha ha. We were so competitive with each other.

I think I would rather play the Junior version.

OMG! You have a Star Wars Monopoly game!! Where did you get it? I must buy one for my little man.

  2. kilax says:

Lisa – there are many different versions – I have the Episode I version, but there is also an original trilogy edition and the new trilogy and even a saga version. I received my version a LONG TIME ago for Christmas, but you might be able to find them at Toys R Us or Amazon! I looked on Amazon and they were really expensive. If you have any game stores in your town, that might be a good place to look. Otherwise, there is always ebay… 😉

I think every family has their own Monopoly rules–which is interesting when you play with someone new–the first question usually asked is “so, how do you play Monopoly.”

  4. diane says:

Robin’s right!! The most heated argument I find myself getting into with people is the “Free Parking” rule. Do you put penalty money under free parking? Does the person who lands there get it? It is of dire importance to know this before the game begins! 😉
(btw, when I was growing up, there was no Monopoly Junior, so I played the hardcore version my whole childhood)

  5. SJ says:

I hate Monopoly. That damn game lasts FOREVER. You are so sick of it by the time someone wins, you don’t even care. I’d much rather play Careers.

  6. Rachel says:

I always did the same trick with hiding the money, and then whoever I was playing with would accuse me of stealing from the bank.

I don’t think I’ve ever played the adult version correctly.

  7. Robin says:

Diane–in my family, we play with the penalty money in the middle of the board. The player landing on Free Parking gets it all! It IS of dire importance to know this before playing the game. We also only pay rent if the owner notices we are on the property.

  8. Dave2 says:

I have the limited edition original Star Wars Monopoly… it has a serial number and everything. Very cool way to enjoy Monopoly again…

  9. kilax says:

Robin – that’s a good point about the rules. I think my cousins even play it different then we do!

diane – I don’t think I knew people did that with the petty cash! But I could see how it would turn into a big argument. I bet you are fun to play games with diane 🙂

Rachel – I think that is what I accused my siblings of as well. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

Dave2 – I WANT! I WANT! I WANT! Actually, I might have it. I have so many unknown Star Wars toys at my parent’s house. Of course, they are all current toys, not from the original trilogy.

  10. Felicia says:

oh gosh my family doesn’t abide by the rules, we play with free money in the middle, you can negotiate with the person next you, and the idea that the banker always cheats LOL (even though they don’t). I say make your own rules and play 🙂

My sister and I were shopping yesterday and saw candyland……that was my favorite game as a kid. I almost bought one but instead I bought my parents the board game, Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader because they love the show.

  11. Have yo seen the latest version of monopoly? think debit cards.

  12. *lynne* says:

wahaha this is great! just yesterday Kosh and I were doing some holiday shopping for his nephews, and he wsa obsessed about finding, if not getting, the Star wars version of Monopoly, but it wasn’t on the shelves, and he was so disappointed, and started to wonder if he’d dreamt such a thing existed! I’ll point him here so he can rest assured it DOES exist! 🙂

btw – I too figured out, in college, that the way my family played monopoly was extremely lax and non-competitive, such that I was totally taken aback the one time I played in college according to the “real” rules. Haven’t even gone near the game ever since, LoL!

  13. It’s too hard to play the “special editions” Monopoly.

Is the death star park place or baltic ave? It’s too hard to keep track of what’s what, IMHO.

That’s just been my feelings the few times I’ve tired playing them.

  14. kilax says:

Felicia – I think I want to play by your rules 😉 I used to love candyland as a kid! They should make an adult version!

Gina (Mannyed) – I just saw that at Target last night. Is the idea that you don’t have to use your math skills anymore and it does it electronically for you? Ha ha ha!

*lynne* – I hope Kosh can find it! That is so funny that he happened to be searching for it! You must have played with some hardcore people in college. Do you know they have Monopoly tournaments?! Those people must be crazy!

Gary LaPointe – I have felt that way too – that if you are used to playing the original, the special addition can be confusing. And jeez, there are so many special addition versions!
