Do you think I have enough fruit in my diet?

Maybe this is why people think I eat so healthy:

This is the fruit I brought to eat at work today – a peach, a gold delicious apple, a gala apple, an orange, a pink cripps apple, grapes and a banana*.

This is a completely normal amount of fruit to eat, right? Ha ha. How much fruit do you eat in a day?

As I am reseaching more and more about veganism, I am realizing I need to be very careful about my protein intake, especially since I exercise. I am sad to say, I think I am going to have to cut out some of the fruit and replace it with legumes and seeds; I need to “re-balance” my diet. Oh well. I’ll get used to it. (I hope!)

*That banana is not brown enough! But at least it did not explode like the one did from yesterday.

I’m with you! If someone told me to eat more fruit, I think I’d do a little happy dance. But, adding more veggies into my life leads me to sigh. I think that is a lot of fruit, but I eat meat, so who am I to judge?! In my lunch today, I have a pink lady apple, orange and banana (waaaaay less brown than that … first brown spots on mine and I’m ready to throw it away!).

  2. Beth says:

Wow that’s impressive. I don’t eat near that much fruit; actually like veggies better. (weird, I know).

  3. Amy says:

That is a TON of fruit! Nothing wrong with it, though. I do know that apples take a long time to digest, so they aren’t the best to eat right before a workout. But they are delicious and good for you any other time!! πŸ™‚

  4. Kyra says:

I think that is actually a bit high on the fruit side of things, to be honest. I agree with diversifying your carbs and balancing out your proteins, especially with how much running you’re doing.

  5. sizzle says:

That is a lot of fruit!

  6. Shaina says:

You are so good! I don’t eat enough fruits and veggies, and I think about it allll the time. It’s just hard!

  7. that is a whole lot of fruit but i think it’s awesome that you eat so much fruit!!!
    =^..^=

  8. Jo says:

That’s about the amount of fruit I get in one week! Wow.

  9. Jo says:

p.s. I’m not one who likes to get my fruit/veggies in, so that’s why that’s a week’s worth for me.

  10. Mica says:

Geez, lady! Your counter looks like freakin’ fruit of the loom!

  11. tori says:

That is a lot of fruit to eat in one day but it’s better than a bunch of candy bars or something.

I have a yummy bean salad recipe that I eat with tortilla chips all the time. My 9 year old son and I could live on only this I think. Mix together 1 can each of black beans and black eyed beans, 1 can shopeg corn, 1 can rotel, some red or green peppers all chopped up and half a bottle of italian dressing. Let it sit for a while and then eat it. So yummy!

  12. Erin says:

I admit I am really bad at eating fresh fruit. I have texture issues with a lot of it, so I tend to be really picky about what I’ll eat and at what stage I’ll eat it.

So, unless dried cranberries, applesauce, and the occasional date count, I’m failing at getting in my recommended daily fruit amount.

  13. diane says:

I think you have a fruit compulsion! Ha ha.
I’m good on the fruit, bad on the veggies. Have I already asked you if you’ve tried some of the vegan cheeses? I thought of you when I saw them at the grocery store Friday night…

  14. Ren says:

I don’t eat nearly enough fruit. Lately, the fruit in that Parfait thing from McDonald’s a few times a week is about it. I did buy a bunch of fruit at the grocery store last night, so I should do a bit better for a while. When we have apples in the house, I’ll often have one in the evening. And maybe a banana in the morning sometimes. Like I said, not nearly enough.

  15. Alice says:

oh my gosh… that IS a lot of fruit! i don’t think i could deal with a meal that had no (non-vegan) protein.. i’m trying to cut down on the vaccuuming in of carbs, but no cheese or meat? it makes me sad. the fruit fills you up??

  16. Sue says:

Well, I usually like only one apple a day (it has an, ah, effect on my system). I also like to eat an orange, a banana, and whatever else I might have in the fridge. Fruit is great!

  17. Susan says:

That’s a lot of fruit!! Do you eat more when you’re not at work? I usually eat fruit with every meal, as well as vegetables with lunch and dinner. But I definitely don’t come anywhere near that amount of fruit!

  18. kilax says:

Just so you guys know, I was not hungry enough to eat the gala apple and orange. And… I do not normally bring this much fruit. I am not sure how I ended up with so much in my bag today!

SoMi’s Nilsa – Ooo, your fruit content sounds much more reasonable than mine. I sometimes wish I could live off of fruit. Especially pineapple, strawberries and kiwi. Oh yum!

Beth – Not weird! Good! I had a big salad at lunch, but am looking for ways to eat more veggies throughout the day. Sometimes I’ll have a few different kinds at lunch, then a few more in the afternoon with hummus, but I get bored. I wish I could have fresh steamed broccoli for lunch at work! πŸ˜€

Amy – I have heard that grapes are the same way… they take a while to digest? Maybe because of the “skins”?

Kyra – It will be fun to re-balance everything and figure out exactly what I need to eat!

sizzle – LOL. I know. Too much!

Shaina – I agree. Sometimes I feel too lazy to peel an orange, but I always enjoy eating it. Fruit and veggies take work.

CourtneyInControl – Hee hee. Thanks πŸ™‚

Jo – Whoa! Maybe we balance each other out then? πŸ˜‰

Mica – LOL! You are right. It would have been even better if I had some other kind of fruit instead of two apples. Me so lame.

tori – ooo, your salad sounds like something I would like. I LOVE beans. Maybe I should make something like that and leave the fruit behind? πŸ˜›

Erin – Applesauce counts πŸ˜‰ As long as it is not loaded with sugar! πŸ˜‰ (And cranberries and dates count too πŸ™‚ )

diane – Steven looked at the vegan cheeses for me. He said a lot of them have milk in them. WTF? Wait… then they wouldn’t be vegan. I think he must have been looking at soy cheese (at Trader Joe’s). I haven’t tried them yet, but am excited too! I think I need to channel my fruit compulsion over to veggies and protein. I love my veggies, but love my fruit even more!

Ren – It sounds like you are making an effort though! πŸ˜‰

Alice – It does fill me up πŸ˜‰ But I also try to eat a lot of complex carbs and fiber too πŸ™‚

Sue – Nice way of putting that πŸ˜‰ Hee hee.

Susan – I usually only eat fruit at work during the week, which is why it looks like I have so much. I tend to cut back on the weekend. I think I should be more like you. Just once piece a meal. So only 3-4 pieces! πŸ™

  19. Bethany says:

WOW! That is a LOT of fruit. I wish I ate that healthily– great job, though. If you have a problem of eating too much fruit, that’s a “good problem” in my mind- hehe!

  20. I also eat a ton of fruit! don’t know if I eat THAT much, but I get pretty close some days!

    so yummy!!!

  21. JavaQueen says:

Lawdy, das a whole lottsa fruit! GOOD FOR YOU! I think I just ate this much fruit this year so far- LOL! I’m bad w/ fruit but I love my veggies!

  22. martymankins says:

I’ve added a lot of fruit to my diet. Mostly berries at this point (staw, rasp, black). I also eat pineapple and watermelon, too, but no where near the amount like the above berries.

  23. kaylen says:

wow, sometimes I don’t eat that much fruit in a month….unless it’s in some dessert or some yummy baked dish that someone else puts in front of me.
Except when the little mandarin oranges are in season and on sale all the time—I can eat a box of those in a matter of days. I think that balances out my fruit across the year, right? πŸ™‚

  24. kilax says:

Bethany – It sounds like you are getting on the track to eating healthy now! go you!

Shannon (The Daily Balance) – Yay! I am not alone! I think I could live off of fruit!

JavaQueen – Ha ha. Hey – at least you are on board with veggies!

martymankins – Ooo, you are eating all the good stuff! I wish I wasn’t too lazy to get nd cut a watermelon!

kaylen – I have never had the mandarin oranges fresh – always out of the can! That does sound good. I think it balances it, hee hee πŸ˜›
