Friday Question #103

By , March 5, 2010 4:37 am

What is one thing you should get rid of, but probably never will?

You know, I have had this question stored as a draft for a long time. I wanted to ask it, but didn’t have my own answer! I love to throw away/give away/donate things, so it took me awhile to come up with something. But I figured it out when I was reading Marcia’s post questioning whether or not she should get rid of her running clothes.

One thing I should get rid of, but probably never will, is my running bibs!

Kim's wall of racing bibs

After a race, I tape the bib (and sometimes medal!) up on a wall in my closet. Then I print out a picture to put next to the bib. When I get dressed in the morning, I feel inspired looking at them!

But, what is going to happen when I fill up the wall? Move on to the ceiling?!

  1. Oh man…I am so bad about not throwing things out. I’m really bad about that with clothing…”But I MIGHT wear it again SOME day…” Yeah, that’s kind of my tagline πŸ™‚

  2. BostonRunner says:

I love saving little, seemingly random things (like movie tickets or cards). I have a box that I put them all in and I love going through them. But while I hang on to that sort of stuff, I don’t have much of a problem throwing out other things that don’t have as much importance. I love your collection of bibs!
I don’t know what I should get rid of but probably never will..maybe my collection of old books..

    • kilax says:

Steven and I each have our own “Box of Sentimental Crap” (that is what we call it!) with those sorts of things in it too πŸ™‚

  3. Amy says:

I haven’t thrown out any of my bibs either! I did make a memory box out of my bib and medal for my two half marathons…

  4. You just inspired me to do the same! I saved my running bib from my first 10k last fall, but I couldn’t decide what to do with it. Absolutely LOVE this idea. πŸ˜€

I have this Got Milk? poster of Tedy Bruschi from the Patriots hanging up on my door that I’ve had forever. I don’t think it’s ever coming down..haha. πŸ˜€

  5. Wow, that takes diligence. I only keep medals and certificates for longer races. And I couldn’t tell you where any of them are right now … in a box somewhere … hopefully.

  6. Kristie says:

…I used to hold on to every ticket, brochure, etc. from EVERYTHING. But, when they filled up 3 velcro folders I decided maybe it was time to go through it, especially since the only times I had gone through them were when I ran out of room πŸ˜› I guess now I would say I have a lot of old CDs saved that I don’t listen to anymore, but don’t want to throw away for sentimental reasons.

  7. Tony says:

If I haven’t worn or used something in the past year, I try and get rid of it. I don’t like clutter and I seem to accumulate to much to keep it all.

I will always keep my race bibs and medals as well. I like you idea of taking the photo with the bib. I have seen some sort of albums to keep the bibs in, but I like to see them out for motivation as well.

  8. Would it be overkill to say 99% of the things that I own?? Okay, I’m nowhere near as bad as I used to be — I’m not a total pack rat anymore. But I should definitely get rid of a lot of things.

    <3 <3

  9. Joanne says:

Keep the bibs – of you have to take them down, start a scrap book!
There is too much stuff that I should get rid of to list here. I’m a collector and “pack-rat”. Get the picture…messy.

  10. Nicole, RD says:

Diet books! Before I went into nutrition I purchased and read every diet book out there. Dumb! But I’ll probably never get rid of them!

    • kilax says:

I have a ton of diet/health related books too. I keep thinking about doing giveaways of them…

  11. Christina says:

I collect b its and bobs, but I am at the place right now where I wqnt to get rid of a lot of them. I am feeling overly cluttered.

  12. RunningLaur says:

I have all of my bibs too, but I like that yours have pictures with them. I figure one day (maybe when we move and I don’t have a specific wall for them, I may put them in a scrapbook sort of thing, thus adding in the pictures.

For me, I have a hard time with clothes – and today has been dubbed the “Massive clothing purge of 2010” (really the whole decade. We’ll see how it goes πŸ™‚

  13. Love the bibs! I can’t wait until I get my first one. πŸ˜€

I don’t know if I have anything I should throw away.. maybe old cloths although I’m pretty good about that. Oh! Now I know.. old stuffed animals from my childhood. They’re all stashed away in a box gathering dust but I can’t bare to give them away.

  14. Sammi says:

I have my bibs taped up on my bathroom mirror πŸ™‚ I need to find a new space for them though.
I’m actually pretty good about throwing away things that I don’t need anymore. Kind of bad when it comes to shoes though. I have shoes that I’m probably never going to wear again but I keep them just in case! You never know when you will need orange high top converses… right? lol

  15. Ameena says:

I really want to say my husband but that would be harsh, even for me! Just kidding, I don’t keep anything around that isn’t used, I mean not one single thing! I have no place to store stuff so if it doesn’t fit or we don’t use it then I donate it.

Love your wall…you should definitely start on the ceiling next. πŸ™‚

  16. Karin says:

I love running bibs too (even though I only have two, hehe). I would also never get rid of any medals. For some reason I have a hard time parting from anything.. I just love having memories of certain situations/stages of my life.

  17. I wouldn’t get rid of my running bibs! I only have one at the moment…but it makes me proud πŸ™‚

  18. Ren says:

I love that you save them like that. I wish I had done something similar. Maybe I’ll start.

  19. martymankins says:

Personally, I think you should keep all of your running bibs, but maybe put them in a book, along with the pictures from each race. Kind of like making a scrapbook, but if you are not into scrapbooking, you can call it a montage of your accomplishments.

For me, it’s older computer hardware. I have been good lately at getting rid of some of it, but things like my older Mac computer, older hard drives with data on them and various sets of floppy disks of yesteryear software may stay around for good.

    • kilax says:

My friend Erin does that kind of book! I should ask her if I can see it. I bet it is really cool. Maybe she could even do a post on it!

Oh gosh. Steven keeps old computer junk too!

  20. Erin says:

Shoes. I have a really, really hard time getting rid of shoes. I have SO MANY and I know I don’t need all of them. But you just never know when you might need a spare pair of black high heels or those fancy brown sandals you bought to wear to a wedding but haven’t worn since.

All my race bibs are in a scrapbook with photos and fliers and such.

    • kilax says:

Do you keep your running shoes too? That is what I notice I can’t see to get rid of… those Brooks I will never wear (P.S. I ordered another pair of GTS 9s (me so cheap) so I can alternate my running shoes. I got the Chianti ones!!!).

  21. Kim says:

I have a hard time throwing things away, but I’ve gotten way better. I used to be overly sentimental, saving every ticket stub from every movie or concert or other event. Our condo is small so I’ve had to learn to throw things away. We get a lot of trinkety type gifts from my grandmas and my husband’s mom…They go in a cupboard. We should probably throw these away, but I’m terrified of them visiting and asking to see them. Oh well.

  22. cher says:

oh, the bibs. we have tons of them and we planned on littering our room with them, kind of like little flags, but that hasn’t happened, so instead they sit in a messy pile in the room. that’s not attractive.

i am pretty good about throwing things away that i don’t need. usually, when i’m doing this, i get a lecture from someone about it (someone being my husband), that i might need that thing in 10 years.

  23. onelittletrigirl says:

I will never get rid of my bibs or medals!!

I have a horrible habit of saving T-shirts from every event and or special thing ever. WAY too many!!!

  24. Holly says:

That is a GREAT idea! I love how you have pics next to the bib numbers. I’ve saved random bibs (but all my marathon bibs) – I should do the same!

I should probably throw away pics of ex-boyfriends. But I feel like I’m throwing away memories! Hopefully when I get married…

  25. Stef says:

nice bibs! i think that’s really fun actually! i agree with the poster above me, i still have paraphernalia from my ex, even though i have NO feelings towards him at all. i guess bc he was my first bf i have some sentimental connection to them? i never look at the stuff tho!

  26. Teamarcia says:

At least you’ve done something with yours! Mine sit in a large envelope. And my medals are in a box. I keep meaning to display them in an inspiring way, just haven’t quite done it. I wouldn’t get rid of those because in a million years when you’re old and gray you’ll look at them and smile.
As for me, I still have business suits I haven’t worn in over 10 years. I totally need to send them on their way.
PS: A-lister is just my twisted way of saying follower.

  27. Felicia says:

I am not a “hoarder” but I have PC games going back to the early 90’s that I will probably never throw out though most are unplayable now.

  28. Linzi says:

I love this idea!! Your wall is very inspiring with all those race numbers and medals! Go girl! I have a huge storage container full of Sorority Memorabilia from college. Our sorority no longer exists so I am saddened to throw it away, but a lot of it no longer fits or doesn’t really fit my life now. I keep it as a memory, but I am sure some day I will have to part with all the old t-shirts, mugs, photo frames…etc.

  29. Kate says:

All the boxes sitting in the storage room in our basement. I haven’t opened most of them since we moved in April 2008. My guess is whatever is in those boxes is not necessary to me and Brian leading a happy, fulfilling life together. πŸ™‚

  30. I have a really hard time tossing pictures and cards! We still have our photo Christmas cards up on our fridge from 2008…

  31. Kaira says:

For me, everything I could think of was clothing related.

  32. Shannon says:

I think you are right to keep your bibs…..its a record of your accomplishments!

  33. I love your avatar pic……
I am a person who throws out everything unfortunately. Sometimes I jump the gun and throw things away I or the husband need later on. I think I am too anal retentive!

    • kilax says:

I have done the same thing… my mom hates that about me! Whenever I tell her I have thrown something out, she is so upset!

  34. Amanda says:

For some reason I have no problem throwing out my bibs, but Rich keeps all of us and I definitely get wanting to keep them. I love that you put them up with a pic.
The thing I should probably throw out but won’t are old cards/letters/pics from my ex-bf, the one major ex that I have that I dated for years. It’s nice sometimes to go back through them all and be transported to another time and place, even though I don’t wish to go back there in reality, kwim?

  35. Paula says:

I think it’s great that you have them up! A daily reminder is perfect. When the wall fills up you should pick you very favorites to leave up and put the rest in a scrapbook. πŸ™‚
