Are you entrepreneurial?

By , August 3, 2010 8:14 pm

I am at a work conference, and the speaker after dinner tonight was Bill Rancic. I didn’t know who he was until his speech, but apparently, he won season 1 of The Apprentice. Have you ever watched The Apprentice?

When I was searching for a picture of him on Google Images, some of the other suggested searches were “bill rancic hot,” “bill rancic shirtless” and “bill rancic shirt off.” Ha! I wondered why all of those women were taking their picture with him tonight.

I also saw a picture of his wedding:

Apparently he is married to Giuliana DePandi from E! News? Should I know who these people are? Was Joel McHale making fun of them at one point? That would be the only reason I would have heard of them.

Anyway, his speech was really good. I was sitting there listening and thinking, “I wish I was a good public speaker.” Maybe someday…

He was telling us his history, and how he became such a successful entrepreneur. He talked about how important it is to be creative, and confident, and blah blah blah… I believe in what he was saying, but all I could think was, I am NOT like that. I have no entrepreneurial tendencies. I don’t mind “working for the man” (obviously) and like knowing what path my work projects are on. I like the security of it all. I don’t do well with taking risks.

Are any of you entrepreneurial?

He probably was an interesting speaker — being entrepreneurial is supposed to be part of the ‘American dream’ but most people don’t seem to have that spirit anymore. I like the idea of forging my own path but walk a fine line between that and wanting a solid job that pays the bills. It’s hard to have the best of both worlds.

Hehe! I loved the first season of the Apprentice…Bill was great! (Beyond his good looks!) There is actually an E! Special…Juliana and Bill Married Away (or something like that) Sadly, I watch too much crap TV but I don’t watch E! as a general rule (just a bunch of other crap).

I am on the entrepreneurial side of healthcare as Director of Strategy and Business Development and also as Managing Director of our Innovation Board, and I REALLY love it. I am not a “fly by the seat of my pants” person, I like to have data to back up my decisions, but I also think being in tune with consumer behavior/traveling patterns/interests is really important and having the “gut feel” is also important. (I might add it’s also important to know your competition) You can analyze ANYTHING to death (we call it ‘paralysis by analysis’) and sometimes you just have to go with it and tweak the decisions from there.

I am actually probably a little more conservative in my personal life b/c while I think I would be an awesome business owner and would be successful (not necc. healthcare business, just in general), I really like my salary and security(!) and don’t know if I could handle the ups/downs/etc…I guess I tap the entrepreneurial yearnings at work and right now that’s good!

Oh my gosh, Bill mentioned “paralysis by analysis” and how important it is to just MAKE a decision! He even said that Trump said to him, “I will support any decision you make – right or wrong. The day I don’t support you is the day you DON’T make a decision.”

LOL! I love it! I actually feel very validated right now (seriously!) b/c it is a constant challenge (opportunity? lol) that we have where I work and it’s REALLY hard to get people moving sometimes. I think stalling is also a way of people “making a decision” but it’s the ultimate cop out b/c it’s like they didn’t have the balls to state their position.

haha yes I totally watched the first season of the Apprentice and remember him! I haven’t seen him since (nor have I watched the Apprentice!) I’m not usually one to know the celebrities or watch those kinds of shows but my family got really into that season for some reason..
I don’t think I’m quite confident and “go getter” enough to be a truly successful entrepreneur, but that’s not to say I don’t think it would be exciting and fun to own my own business – maybe some day I’ll develop the skills..

I want to be, but have no experience in any of the entrepreneurial areas that interest me. 🙁

  5. Honestly, I had no idea he was on the apprentice! I watch E! alot, so I’m familiar with Guiliana (and got excited to see her at the half marathon on sunday!) and knew that she and her husband have a reality show that I’ve watched a few times. I had no idea what he did for a living!

  6. Christina says:

I like their reality show!! You should have took a pic with him Kim!

  7. ChezJulie says:

Like you, I’m not entrepreneurial at all. I work for a large organization and enjoy it. I feel like I can be very creative and challenged within that structure.

  8. Pauline says:

I don’t know who any of those people are either, but then again I don’t like Donald Trump so I don’t watch “The Apprentice”.

I think I could be entrepreneurial with the right idea and product. Of course, doing research probably wouldn’t hurt either.

  9. Kandi says:

I’ve never watched the apprentice and I didn’t know who Bill Rancic or the chick from E! News was… but I’m amused by your Joel McHale comment because seriously, that’d be the only way I would know who they were too!!
I think I’m a lot like you… except I don’t really have any inclination to be a great public speaker… I’d rather not have all the focus on me in any given situation.

Ugg, Giuliana looks skinny gross. I’m not a very entrepreneurial guy. In fact, I’m one of the few people that I know who actually LIKES the relative comfort of working at a big corporation. I’m not sure how much I would like working for a smaller outfit. Is your arch job pretty big?

I have a feeling that I’d have a hard time ‘unplugging’ if I were my own boss. I have a hard time already!!

    • kilax says:

Yeah, my company is HUGE! At least 300+ in my office, who knows how many in the region, and thousands nationwide. I have worked in two small offices, and I think I actually like the bigger one. It’s harder to get your name out, but oh well 🙂

  11. I never know who anyone is because I hardly keep up with “celebrities” or celebrities!

  12. Erin says:

I’ve never heard of either of those people, either!

Sometimes I think it would be nice to be my own boss, but then I remember how unmotivated I am at work already and think there’s no way I could motivate myself to run a business.

  13. I used to totally watch The Apprentice! Specially since the candidates used to stay at the Trump Tower, and I worked at the Trump Tower, so I kept trying to spot someone I knew… Of course, as luck would have it, only the doormen I knew showed up. Because, you know, they were the building’s real doormen and all.

  14. Yes Joel McHale did make fun of them at one point, LOL!
