Friday Question #153

By , March 18, 2011 5:39 am

Have you ever had a professional massage before? Did you like it?

From here

Guess who is getting their first ever professional massage today? This girl, right here:

Maybe they can help with some of my shoulder tightness:

Okay, that last picture may have been a bit of a dramatization.

But I have seriously never had a professional massage before! I have heard some people love them, some people hate them, some say you have to find the right person… I am just going to go for it and see what happens.*

*I am going with my sister and future sister-in-law as sort of a bachelorette party sort of thing. I did not set the massage up and have no idea what it is – I do doubt it is a sports massage (which is probably what I really need) though!

I’ve had some great ones and some not so great ones. I enjoy them, but I’m not the type of person who can totally relax into it. They are good for working out runner’s tight spots though. Enjoy it!

  2. Kandi says:

I have never had one but I can’t wait to hear how it goes for you!

  3. I think you’ll love it! My words of advice are let them know where you need it most or where you don’t want them to massage you (aka my feet)- otherwise you’ll be tense the entire time they’re working.

I am planning to get one after my half marathon. It’s my reward to myself. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Enjoy! It may hurt a little bit (or at least it usually does to me) because I’m so tight, but you’ll feel *amazing* afterward!

  5. J says:

I hope the massage goes well for you! I have had about 4 or 5 I think and i have loved them! They really help to relieve any pressure in your muscles – I have trouble relaxing because I tend to tense up when someone touches me, so I really have to focus on relaxing all my muscles.

  6. Erin says:

Looking forward to hearing about it! Maybe you can tell the masseuse to focus on your shoulder?

  7. bobbi says:

Where are you going? I have had a couple, and always enjoyed them. The best one I ever had was when I was pregnant, in Vegas, and they had this huge foam thing with boob and belly cutouts so I could actually lay on my stomach. My mom is doing a spa day for me and her for my birthday this year, and I’m on the lookout for a good place to go…

I have no idea where we are going. Somewhere in LaPorte City, IA. I have heard a lot of people say they like Massage Envy out here!

  8. I have never had one but really want to try it. Let me know how you like it and maybe that will give me a push to find a place to get one.

  9. Christina says:

Well at first it may seem weird…”Stranger touching me” but then you will sink into a state of realization and ahhhhhhhhh.

I am jealous, enjoy every minute!

  10. cher says:

oh my gosh, i had no idea there were so many people that have not had a massage. i literally had one less than a week ago…and I’m going again tonight.

The only thing that makes it doable to me, is joining a “franchisey” place. i belong to one called La Vida Massage…and seriously, NEVER had a bad massage there.

I can see how it would be a little weird at first…but i’m hoping you will love it!

  11. gina says:

I love getting massages! I hope you enjoy yours! Drink lots of water afterwards!

  12. Jen says:

I’m not a huge fan of massages but I don’t like people touching me…I’m weird like that.

  13. Melissa says:

I LOVE massages! I actually have a membership to Massage Envy and think they are great ๐Ÿ™‚ The membership basically entitles you to 1 massage a month and additional massages at discounted rates, but if you don’t use your monthly it “rolls over” for you to use at any time. I haven’t been as diligent about going regularly (no excuses b/c seriously, they are open until 10pm) so I have quite a few saved up!

I actually had a massage on Wednesday and he did some serious deep tissue on my legs…ouch! (but really it felt great and I needed it) Personally and FWIW, I would not recommend that you jump into super, super deep pressure since this is your 1st one and it can leave you pretty sore afterwards. Also make sure to drink tons of water afterwards.

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy!

    • kilax says:

They told my sister and future sister-in-law about the water, but didn’t tell me. It is a good thing I had a warning from you! I felt fine, but had already had a headache before, and it didn’t go away during the massage. I could actually feel the pain even more intensely when he massaged certain parts of my neck!

      I think I would like a monthly massage ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Mica says:

I’ve had one professional massage. It was really nice, though I don’t know that I would go regularly. (So expensive!) They’d be a nice gift or special treat though.

However, I had some negative side effects afterward. First, I was really sensitive to spicy food, and I almost threw up during lunch. And second, I ended up having a tight spot in my calf for a long time, which affected my running. I’m not sure I’d get one until after a race…a few days after.

    • kilax says:

My aunt told me she was queasy the day after one of her massages! It’s crazy how much it can affect you! Luckily, none of that happened to me.

  15. Michel says:

I’ve had good and some bad as well. Just hope you get a masseuse who isn’t chatty Kathy. That annoys the hell out of me!

  16. sizzle says:

    I LOVE GETTING MASSAGES.

I am actually going today, post-event haze, to unwind with one. They are amazing. I hope you enjoy yours!

  17. Kristina says:

I love massages! I get about 2 a year. Recently, I found a place that is NOT a spa, it’s pretty bare-bones (but very clean), and very cheap for a massage place. I do find them to be pretty restorative, and they can vary. I’ve moved into slightly more intense massages – they can almost hurt at times, but then I feel amazing afterwards.

  18. Victoria says:

Oh my, I am jealous. I hope you enjoy your massage!!

  19. I love a good massage! I’ve gotten a few spa massages before, but have decided to try and get more regular massages for my marathon training. I got a massage on Sunday after my 16 mile run, and it was great! A huge release from my sore muscles (and yes, I did roll, and ice, and stretch). I went to Massage Envy and ended up getting a six month membership. I can’t wait to go back!

  20. Katie H. says:

How fun! Enjoy your first massage ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve had one- a couples massage with Brian when we were on vacation in the dominican a few years ago. It was really great! He wasn’t a huge fan though.

  21. diane says:

I’m always surprised by people who don’t like them, but I’ve heard a lot of reasons why that kinda make sense. I’ve been getting them on a (semi) regular basis since I first started working! (correlation? hmmmm…) I am getting a 90 minute hot stone massage on Sunday. Yum!
    I hope you enjoy!!

  22. ChezJulie says:

I have had about half a dozen real table massages. Sometimes the masseuse is only so-so, but now if I have a back or hip problem I go to this woman named Mya who is a genius. Seriously! She knows just what to do to diffuse pain and stretch out muscles to get you feeling better. Enjoy!

Oh, and love the pictures of the feline massage and “this girl, right here.” LOL.

  23. *lynne* says:

I’m taking a Massage Therapy course right now! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve not had many massages myself, mainly because I know there are lots of “meh” providers out there, and I would want someone who would be able to dig in and torture my muscles into relaxing (sounds paradoxical, I know). It takes a while to build to that level of competence tho, so I don’t know when I myself would be able to provide that to my future clients.

So how was your session? I’m guessing it was just a 10-15min chair massage.

    • kilax says:

That is cool that you are getting training! My massage was a full hour table massage. I think he said he applied medium pressure or something like that ๐Ÿ˜‰

  24. Massages rock!!!! I hope you get a great person and really enjoy it!! Let us know what you thought!!
    =^..^=

  25. Robin says:

I love getting massages! I get about one per month. It is soooo relaxing. I don’t get the deep tissue though. I don’t like to hurt after the massage. My favorite is the hot stone massage. I highly recommend that!
    Enjoy your massage!

  26. I love them- I get sports specific massages after every race!

  27. martymankins says:

Yes, have had several of them over the years. They are really nice. Painful at first, but the suggestion I was given was to go once every 2 weeks for 2 months, which gets your body used to them. I did that and it worked. Of course, it’s been over a year since my last massage. But I always look forward to them.

  28. Adam says:

Meh, I don’t like people touching my legs, so I’m not a HUGE fan – but they are pretty good if I”m feeling particularly run down. I usually get one after a hard marathon as a ‘reward’.
