Makeup musings

By , April 6, 2011 6:04 am

If I didn’t know better, I would think Data wants to learn how to apply makeup (I am not sure I should be the one to teach him though!)!

Actually, Data just wants to be fed. He is so cuddly in the morning.

I think I need someone to teach ME how to apply makeup. Or what makeup to wear. Every morning, I put on four things:

Eyeshadow, eyebrow gel, mascara and eyeliner (not in that order). It’s the same four things everyday (well, everyday I wear makeup! Ha!). Ho Hum.

I actually seem to have nicer makeup at work (photo below)ย – what’s up with that? I need to buy some of that Clinique mascara and eye stuff for home. Actually, I would like to have ALL Clinique products. They don’t test on animals and I like their products.

If you wear makeup, do you wear the same thing everyday or do you switch it up? Do you have a favorite brand? Do you even wear makeup everyday?

I don’t think this post will help me win any male readers!

I wear mascara and eye-liner but only on school days. I didn’t start wearing make-up until I was 32 or so. In the summer – I’m totally make-up free and HAPPY about it! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. The ONLY makeup I wear every day without fail is mascara. I’m a bit of a mascara addict, actually, but I think my all-time favorite is L’Oreal Voluminous… it’s practically the only one I’ll wear on its own, otherwise I layer two or three different types.

Since you mentioned Clinique… years ago, my friends gifted me a Clinique makeover (the point wasn’t the makeover, it was the $75 worth of “free” makeup that came with it :P), and can I just say? I looked scary afterward. I have pale skin; no need to accentuate it and make me look like a ghost!!

Yeah, I have done one of their makeovers before and HATED the way they made me look. WAY too much makeup! I like to look more natural.

I do wear make-up to work and going out and for the odd occasion. I don’t however, really “mix it up” or wear a lot. Nor does it take me loads of time to do my makeup.
If you are interested in environmentally friendly companies, I highly recommend Origins products OR Aveda. I have used Aveda for YEARS and I really like their products. I don’t use Origins’ make-up, but their skin creams are great. Aveda’s products aren’t super heavy. They have tinted lipgloss, which is like chapstick with color.
The initial investment CAN be pricey, but I’ve had the same eyeshadow for a few years and an eyeliner pencil also lasts me 12-24 months. So, it’s not something that you have to keep investing in.

I am SO lazy with my makeup. My mom never wore much and so I never really learned how to apply it…I love it when other people do it for me but I have olive skin and dark lashes and people have told me that they often can’t tell when I’m actually wearing it so then I question if it’s worth the time on a regular basis ๐Ÿ™‚

I use a mix of clinique and Aveda skincare products but wear MAC Studio Fix powder (sometimes with a little concealer) and Philosophy tinted lip gloss daily. Bonus if mascara (various free sample tubes) or blush (Cargo) make it into the equation. If eyeshadow (MAC)is present, it’s a seriously special occasion ๐Ÿ™‚ LOL

  5. Jamie says:

I wear some kind of cover-up or skin tint (moisturizer w/ a tint for the hot summer months!) and mascara if I leave the house other than for a workout or running an errand by myself. Somehow curling my eyelashes and wearing mascara makes me feel more put together. For work and going out I wear my “good stuff” BareMinerals and for everyday I wear benefit and other random stuff I find at Sephora. It is expensive but it lasts me awhile so I only feel the price pain every few months.

  6. I’m pretty boring when it comes to makeup- it’s pretty much the same thing every day with heavier/lighter application depending on what time of day or what I’m doing…. ho hum indeed…

  7. sizzle says:

I am a bit of a make up junkie. I wear light foundation, blush, pencil in my eyebrows, under eye cover up, and sometimes eyeshadow and mascara or just eyeliner and mascara. Always mascara! I love make up. It’s fun. I mix it up with different eyeshadow colors and liners.

    • kilax says:

I used to try to pencil in my brows but I totally was not doing it right AT ALL! What is your secret?

  8. gina says:

we are make-up twins. I like Estee Lauder and MAC. When I actually wear it. I hope one day Data can teach me how to apply it.

  9. lol that is too cute! Lexie watches me get ready in the morning, but not so intently. Animals are funny like that, my horse used to turn around and watch me everytime I was doing anything with his back legs, or feet too. I think it means they like us. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. J says:

I wear the same mascara every day if I remember to put it on! some days I do eye liner, some days no. Some days I put on eye shadow too, others days I don’t. I don’t know how to do makeup and I hope I can find someone to do my makeup for the wedding because I have no idea!

  11. J says:

I tried to comment, but it didn’t show up?? hmm im confused.

  12. Kandi says:

I rarely wear makeup to work and occasionally wear it when I got out but I am lazy and don’t always make the time. I don’t have specific brands that I like but I have some Cover Girl mascara that I quite like. I can’t remember the name.. eye lights or something? I have it in midnight to highlight my blue eyes. I also have some mineral powder foundation but it’s an inexpensive drug store brand.
I hardly wear make up to work because if I run at lunch I sweat it all away and then my face is too red and/or sweaty after a run to put any fresh makeup on so I just go without.

  13. Erin says:

I didn’t start wearing make up regularly until I was in my mid-20s and even now I’m still not sure what I’m doing! My skin is so oily and I sweat so easily that by the end of most days my face looks like an oil slick. Yuck. Still, I wear Bare Escentuals powder as a foundation, Clinique blush, eye shadow, and I use a darker eye shadow as eye liner because regular eye liner scares me!

  14. bobbi says:

In the last 5 years, my skin has gone crazy 12 year old zitty nasty. *sigh* With age spots. So I wear makeup whenever I am going to see people, outside of school drop off (doesn’t count). I wear tinted moisturizer, concealer for blemishes, a powder foundation, blush, eyeliner and brow pencil, and mascara. Wow, that sounds like a lot! But I dont wear a lot of any of it. Eyeshadow only when I’m getting fancy. I wear all Mary Kay, because I sold it for 5 minutes a few years ago, and I still have a lot left…

  15. I actually rarely wear makeup! I try to wear some when I go out, but that’s about it.

I learned quite a bit about applying makeup from my makeup artist for the wedding — I even bought the powder foundation she used (in the correct shade, I had always gotten it wrong!). She teaches a “self-makeup class” which I would totally pay for if I had enough time in Brazil to go there!

  16. Oh, and by the way, am I the only one that think it’s super weird so many runner bloggers apply makeup to run? Some look like clowns on race day? Why would you do that to your skin if you’re just sweating anyway?

    • kilax says:

I still put on brow gel and sometimes a touch of eyeshadow when I am racing ๐Ÿ™‚ But I don’t do a full face. My routine takes me a minute or so. Ha ha.

What I don’t get is the shower before a race. What is the point?

  17. Denise says:

First I want to know how you can apply eye makeup holding Data? I would have poked my eye out! I rarely wear foundation. I usually don’t like the feel of it on my face and I think it makes my already large pores appear larger. If I wear it, I like Youngblood mineral foundation. Most of the time I wear eyeshadow or eyeliner and always mascara. I even have some “colored” mascara like purple and blue. Just for fun. I will not be trying the whole hold the cat while you apply eye makeup thing. LOL

    • kilax says:

Ha ha. How is the makeup applying cat holding working out for you? ๐Ÿ™‚ It was kind of hard for me!

  18. lifestudent says:

I never wear makeup. Ever. And its not because Im a natural beauty. I desperately NEED makeup. I just cant get it together ๐Ÿ˜‰

  19. ChezJulie says:

I wear makeup to work every day, and when I go out. For work I wear tinted moisturizer, mascara, and lipstick. I used to do more with eyeliner and shadow but I’ve gotten lazy and I also feel like now that I wear glasses it’s not as noticeable. I like M.A.C. and Almay products. I try to look up on the PETA website to avoid buying from companies that test on animals.

Kim, I think you would look really purty with a soft brown eyeliner and peachy-pink tinted balm or sheer lipstick. ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Amy says:

I don’t wear makeup to run or work out, but in the rest of my life, I always wear powder foundation (Dior), mascara and lipstick. Sometimes eyeshadow.

  21. Susan says:

I’ve pretty much worn the same make up since I started wearing it at age 14…but that’s mainly because I don’t know how to do anything else! (I sometimes put on eye shadow and totally make it up…there’s probably some technique that I’m unaware of…)

  22. Mica says:

I am the same way about make-up; I definitely feel like I need a tutorial. That being said, I just have stopped wearing it because I’m a grad student, and no one seems to care.

I’ve come to the conclusion that really, I’m not a “make-up” person, so I shouldn’t keep trying to enjoy it. I always feel overwhelmed by all the products and really turned off by the price. It isn’t something that I want to spend my time or money on, so I’ll just go with the bare essentials.

  23. martymankins says:

The only connection this post has to this male reader is how cats can always want to be whee you are. I get this a lot with Rocko, who needs to be right in your lap or face when on the computer. The keyboard goes nuts when he lays on it.

  24. Etta says:

I can’t seem to make myself wake up early enough to put on makeup most days. When I do, I generally wear the same thing. I’d love to replace all of my makeup with Clinique products! I currently use their facewash and moisturizer and LOVE it. I also have a lipstick and mascara from them, as well as a few other random things.
