30 Day Fashion Shoot: Days 1-7

By , April 7, 2011 7:03 am

Erin just finished doing a 30 Day Fashion Shoot Meme on her blog (for March) so of course, I had to copy. I think the point of this whole thing is to re-evaluate your wardrobe and get creative? I think you guys are just going to get an idea of how little I know about fashion and how crappy I look on a day-to-day basis. Please feel feel to provide input! I am pretty tough-skinned (well, about my wardrobe, anyway).

Day 1 – April 1, 2011

I was going to my brother’s rehearsal dinner, so I got a little dressed up (for me)!

Top (cami + blouse) – New York & Company
Pants – The Limited
Shoes – Payless (of course)
Purse – Target (threw away the next day)
Necklace – New York & Company

Day 2 – April 2, 2011

In the am (I will post race outfit pictures only, not all workout outfits)…

Top – Chicago Marathon
Capris – Kohl’s
Shoes – Asics Gel Cumulus 12s

… and in the pm, at the wedding!

Dress – The Limited
Shoes – Payless
Earrings you can’t see – The Limited

I bought one pair of these earrings for me and one pair for my sister to wear to the wedding:

Day 3 – April 3, 2011

A casual day, for sure! We spent it hanging with the new bride and groom.

Top – Asics “Run Your Own Life” top (it’s so comfy and soft, love it!).
Jeans – Target
Shoes – Asics Gel Cumulus 12s
Necklace – “Sisters” necklace from Red Envelope

Day 4 – April 4, 2011

I ran in the am, and totally bummed around the rest of the day. This is what I look like when I am a bum! P.S. I didn’t pay for any of this outfit!

Top – Essential Fitness shirt (given to me by trainer)
Bermudas (?) – Walmart? (from my sister)

Day 5 – April 5, 2011

Ugh, work. Here we go. This is where I need help!

Top – Target (just scored two days earlier for $10!)
Jacket Thingy – Kohl’s
Pants – Kohl’s
Shoes – Asics Gel Cumulus 12
Earrings – New York & Company

Day 6 – April 6, 2011

Ugh. Notice how tired I look in the am? (These pictures are taken before 5:00 am!)

This top is too tight! I need to lose some more weight if I want to keep wearing it.

Top – Kohl’s
Pants – The Limited
Shoes – Asics Gel Cumulus 12
Earrings – from my mamba

Day 2 – April 2, 2011

DayΒ 7 – April 7, 2011

I was hoping the lighting would be better at work, but… nope. I might have to take these photos at the end of the day when I have natural light.

Top – JCPenney
Pants – ? Not knowing when or where I bought them is probably a sign I need to get rid of them. They look awful. And kind of baggy.
Shoes – Asics Gel Cumulus 12
Earrings you can’t see – from New York & Company

I feel kind of weird posting a bunch of pictures of my outfits, but please know that I do not at all think I look “cute” or “put-together.” The only outfit I like of this bunch is the purple dress. And the race outfit. Ha ha.

Alright, does anyone else wear sneakers at work like me?

I change in to “nice” shoes when I go to meetings. My feet feel better if I wear sneakers most of the time!

I LOVE the top and necklace that you wore to the rehearsal dinner! And of course, the purple dress.
I think your work outfits are similar to what I wear daily. I rarely feel put together when I go to work. I do pretty much always wear non-sneakers for work but I figure I should while I still can. I have too many cute shoes not to wear them to work. πŸ™‚ I prefer my spring/summer shoe collection though so I’m really looking forward to this warmer weather!
Looking forward to seeing your outfits all month.

    • kilax says:

You know, I have a ton of shoes, especially cute summer ones (that my mom keeps buying me for some reason) but I just can’t get in to it! They are so uncomfortable!

  2. J says:

I love that dress – I am always on the look out for cute dresses that are NOT black! I have way too many black ones! I don’t wear sneakers at work, mostly just my danskos and flats.

  3. Kristina says:

There are lots of GOOD shoes that aren’t sneakers, if you do want to dress up the work outfits a bit more. Totally up to you, of course. J. mentioned danskos, I’m a huge fan of born, merrell and clarks which all fall under the ‘comfort shoe’ umbrella, but they do have some cute shoes!
I’m very impressed that you’re doing 30 days of fashion. Just thinking of taking photos of myself is kind of exhausting AND scary

  4. gina says:

Isn’t New York & Company great! My 30 day fashion shoot would just the same four or so outfits in different rotation. I like checking out your jewelry!

  5. Tracy says:

Kim. Run, do not walk (ha ha, get it?), to the store and get yourself some comfortable flats to wear! It will make all the difference in how you feel about your fashion, and it will change any of your work outfits from “cute, but…” to “cute!” Seriously, I know I’m a shoe fiend, but this is SO worth it. Personally, I don’t find Dansko all that comfortable, but Merrell and Clarks are usually. I could come up with more recommendations if you wanted… but trust me, it’s WELL worth it!

I love that you’re doing this, btw!

    • kilax says:

I think I do need to do that. Find something comfortable to leave at work… I can still wear my sneakers on the train, right? πŸ˜›

  6. Erin says:

    Okay, here are my thoughts:

Day 1 – Awesome!!! Love everything about this outfit.
Day 2 – I cracked up when you said in your race report that your pants were falling down because they were too big. Awkward! And of course I love the purple dress πŸ™‚
Day 3 – It might be the angle of the photo, but I think your jeans are too short. Also, you might benefit from a more flared pair to help balance you out.
Day 4 – You are brave to post your bumming around outfits. I wasn’t that brave.
Day 5 – I think a shorter cardigan would work better. A shorter one would accentuate your waist more. And, yes, you DO have a waist. This one adds width to your hips/thighs which I know you are self conscious about.
Day 6 – I don’t think that top looks too tight on you at all! In person (to you) it probably seems too tight but at least in the photo I think it looks great.
Day 7 – Not bad. You’re right though, the pants are pretty baggy and adding extra to your legs.

I think we need to go shopping for comfy yet dressy shoes. I need some, too!

    • kilax says:

Okay, so when are we going shoe shopping? Maybe we can go in CU? Is there anything good there?

Maybe those jeans are too short. I am going to wear them later today so I will have to look. They were only $10 at Target, so I could always buy a better pair… they are the only ones I have that fit right, right now though.

  7. Melissa says:

I really like your rehearsal dinner outfit! I also totally have those crystal studs from The Limited…they are a staple in my wardrobe when I want earrings but don’t want anything dangly. (which seems to be often, lately)

For work shoes, I want to “second” the suggestion to look for non-running shoe casual shoes. You mention that you have flats already, so if you want to be somewhere between a flat and a running shoe you might try a cute “Sketcher” type shoe or something by Clarks, etc.

I don’t wear sneakers to work but when I want a non-dressy shoe with my jeans/t-shirts I have a pair of grey/white “Chuck Taylor-esque” shoes without the laces that I L-O-V-E. They are insanely comfortable and make me feel a little more “polished”. Not that running shoes are clunky but I always feel like they look clunky with my regular clothes and these alternate sneakers help tone that down. Plus, no socks or laces πŸ™‚

  8. I love that first top – a lot. SO cute!

I would totally wear running shoes to work if I could, but I know the guys here would never let me hear the end of it. I pretty much wear flats every day. Ok – I actually walk around barefoot, and put the flats on when somebody comes in. My boss does not like it. πŸ™‚

  9. ChezJulie says:

The rehearsal dinner outfit is a 10! Love the top, love the necklace, love the fit of the pants, love a bright top and darker pants on you.

I agree that getting a different pair of comfy shoes would really make your work outfits look more professional. When I was having some foot problems, I wore black Sketchers to work every day. They were really comfy and cushiony and I think looked more polished than running shoes.

The pants in the bottom outfit are too big. The ones in the top show off your figure much better.

  10. Jen says:

I wish I could help but I’m not very good at fashion. I’m wearing Nike pants and a North Face shirt at work right now. When it gets warmer, I’ll break out my dresses but I’m all about comfort and warmth right now. I agree with the other commenters – shoes might help. I’d love to wear running shoes every day but I think that would make me feel lazy. I have some Merrils that are comfy but still “nice”.

  11. sizzle says:

I love the purple dress you wore to the wedding. It’s a great color on you and most of all, it fits! A lot of your clothes aren’t fitting your body right and thus, not showing off its assets. πŸ˜‰ I agree with Erin, maybe your jeans are too short or the camera angle is making it look like that? I was wondering about your sneakers- thinking maybe you wear them while you commute to and from work but it sounds like you wear them as part of your outfit except for meetings. There ARE comfy, cute shoes out there that would really pull your outfit together. I say take Erin up on her offer to shop for some.

    • kilax says:

I have totally become lazy with the sneakers thing. It is time to find a nicer pair of shoes. Sigh. πŸ™

You said a lot of my clothes aren’t fitting my body right – are you think too tight, too big, or just not highlighting my good features? A lot of these clothes I have had for a long time and my body has changed a lot…

  12. I don’t like the jeans! I think you’d look much better with a bootcut/flare fit.

And stop wearing running shoes to work!!! It’s not good for the shoes (they add to your mileage, and you don’t let your shoes “rest” so that the cushioning can spring back to normal). If you really want to wear sneakers go with more appropriate ones, like the suede sneakers that feels just like running shoes, but clash a lot less with your outfit. Or invest in some comfy flats (or heck, all-black five fingers would even be more discreet than the running shoes!).

And heck, you have to be comfortable when you bum, no comments on that πŸ™‚

(By the way, I LOVE the purple dress! Looks awesome on you!)

    • kilax says:

Don’t worry, those are a retired pair of shoes πŸ˜‰ But I do need to get something better πŸ˜‰ I think I will have to try out all of these other brands that everyone is mentioning!

  13. Jen says:

Why would you buy a purse and throw it away the next day? I think that maybe you need to spend a little more on a few great pieces instead of buying a lot of cheapo stuff that you don’t really like. I need to do the same thing so I’m not being critical.

I actually liked the outfit you said was too tight best of all of them. And the purple dress. Your hair looked really cute in that pic.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha. I should have been more clear. I have had that purse for years and it was falling apart. I planned on using it at the wedding but my sister loaned me a different one so I threw the old one away.

      And thank you! πŸ™‚

  14. Michelle says:

I LOVE that purple dress- it looks great on you! And I think Day #6’s outfit is quite flattering on you, even though you didn’t think so πŸ™‚

  15. This is an interesting concept!

I have been amassing a collection of cute flats for work… no matter what I wear, pretty shoes make me feel more put together… DSW is great for stocking up.

  16. I think you look great no matter what you wear. But then again I am fashion challenged so I wear jeans and t-shirts most days.

When I saw the picture of you with your hair down I wondered if you did something different to it because it didn’t look the way I remembered it. Then I realized that I think I have just never seen your hair down before. It looks so pretty!

  17. Adam says:

OYYY, I’ve been such a bad blogger buddy. I probably owe you an apology for not hanging around much. Well, get ready for a flood of comments on posts that I’ve already read over the past two weeks! πŸ™‚

(it is really hard not to sound creepy with these comments, but here goes…)

-I don’t think that the blue shirt is too tight, it looked good.
-I’m crazy jealous that you can wear tennis shoes to work, or are those your train shoes?
-Your hair down looks good. Why does it make you feel uncomfortable?

    • kilax says:

Those are the shoes I wear around the office. But I am going to stop. And stop looking like a slob.

I feel self conscious of my hair, and I hate it when it gets in my face!

      And thank you πŸ™‚

  18. Jenn says:

My friends do this photo challenge all the time! I feel like I should do it too. It’ll help me realize that I probably wear the same thing ALL the time! πŸ™‚

And I think your hair down looks really pretty! (haha love how Adam tried not to sound like a creeper in the comment above me…) And I don’t think the blue shirt is too tight either, it’s cute!

  19. Etta says:

I was wondering why you had on sneakers in your work pictures. I wear them to work, too, but I wear scrubs.

I really like the top you wore to your brother’s wedding! It’d make a cute work shirt.
