Room for improvement

By , May 26, 2011 6:26 pm

I had my first in-home meeting with my personal trainer (Brian of Essential Fitness) today to get all of my initial measurements – weight, body fat, body measurements, etc. I am so so so excited to be working one-on-one with Brian! We set up our first appointment for next week. I can’t wait.

It’s funny though. For someone who runs so frickin’ much, I sure do have a high body fat percentage and am well overweight. This is NOT a surprise to me, nor was Brian saying anything about this to make me feel bad.* Nor am I too worried about it! The whole point of me hiring a personal trainer is to get more fit, right? Of course I know I have room for improvement.

And that is the weird thing about me. When I see these high numbers and know I am in the overweight BMI** category, I don’t feel discouraged, I feel encouraged. I like knowing I have room for improvement! I know I haven’t reached my peak health and fitness level. I am just odd – I know most people would be upset if their body fat percentage was where mine is, but when I see those numbers, I think “Let’s work on bringing them down!”

So, we’ll see if that happens!

*This is my commentary, not his.
**Not that I take BMI that seriously.

You definitely do not look as though you weigh that much.

You’re so freaking positive…I love it! It’s going to be fun watching you change and get stronger as you work out with Brian. I wouldn’t put too much stock in those numbers…It’s more about how you feel and what you can do with your body. 🙂

Thanks. And you’re right – it is about how I feel. My BiL keeps telling me how strange it is that he is heavier but faster, and it is the same way for me. I beat my half marathon PR and I was well over what I weighed when I set it. Of course, that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t love to lose some weight so running is even easier!

    Good for you!

No way you weigh 187! Are you sure he didn’t have one of his feet on the scale while you were standing on it? I think you look GREAT!!!

  5. Good job for the positive attitude! I can’t wait to hear how your personal training goes!

I don’t take the BMI system very seriously at all. I use it to get a general idea but thats all

You have a great attitude about this – can’t wait to hear how the training goes!

Also, I like how next to this post is a picture of you happy with the giant burrito. A happy life is really all about balance and not feeling guilty for joy! (ha, sorry if I read something more into it than you intended there.)

No, you didn’t read in to it. I am someone who does not feel guilty for the things I do… I do what makes me happy! But I do over indulge. Not so much in burritos, but candy and other junk when I am stressed. I need to find that balance again! 🙂

My experience has been that running does not build muscle, it tears it down, so if running is my primary form of exercise, I lose muscle mass. Couple that with my undisciplined eating habits, and I become a cardiovascularly fit person with a lot of body fatt. Strength training is key for me. Can’t wait to hearabout your workouts!

Can’t wait to hear about your personal training sessions. Sounds like you have a great attitude going in.

I hate those BMI things – the only real accurate way to do it is with the submersion tanks. even the calipers don’t work. Good luck with the trainer!

  11. Erin says:

That is an awesome attitude to take!

I think my favorite thing about hardcore strength training (as in, more than once a week and with heavy free weights) is that you can see results pretty fast!

Another thing I remind myself as that while knowing the number is a must (you shouldn’t hide from them) that as long as you are doing things to improve your general lifestyle then you are doing the right things. Those numbers may not move but the ones that count will: all those ones that take blood to give you the numbers 🙂

Can’t wait to hear about the trainer!

  13. diane says:

Yeah, I think those BMI numbers are nonsense sometimes. But you’re working with a trainer, and the main thing is he’ll help you achieve your goals. That is awesome!
I can’t wait until I feel well enough to exercise regularly again. I miss it so much!

My BMI is very good but the reality is that my belly fat is very bad. Numbers don’t tell the whole story. And my body fat, oh, now that is VERY scary!!!!
