To skip or not to skip (the dressing room)

By , October 6, 2011 6:12 am

When shopping in a store for clothing, do you always try the item on before you purchase it? Or do you sometimes just throw it in the cart and think “I’ll just see if it works when I get home?”

Apparently, if it’s on the clearance rack, I just try it on when I get home. I saw this dress in my size at Target* for $10 and thought I would give it a try. I didn’t think I would be able to wear it this year, but it’s supposed to be 80°F today, so a dress it is! (Note: the dress is actually dark blue)

Would you believe there is someone in my office who gives me grief when I wear a dress to work? Just because they don’t like to wear dresses. Well, for now, I think they are comfortable and fun. Maybe my opinion will change as I get older.

I don’t have much else to say, except I could have saved this for a Friday Question and WHY THE HELL IS SOMEONE PAINTING THEIR NAILS ON THE TRAIN?!?! Yuck! The smell bothers me when it’s my own nails at home!

*You should know that when I write Target, I am saying it in my head as “Tarjay.”

You get crap about wearing dresses? I would high five that person in the face. Dresses are so comfortable. I’ve been living in dresses when I leave the house for a good month now. I have a lot of jersey knit dresses from the summer that I just wear with a cardigan to transition them to fall.

CUTE!! Whenever you post photos of your new stuff I always want to go out and buy the same things! Not to mention that this dress is in my classic black and white color scheme. 😉
I can’t believe someone would give you grief for wearing anything to work (unless it was inappropriate or something).

Aww, thank you! You should definitely check out your Target clearance rack!

I think this dress would be inappropriate without tights! It is quite short!

  3. I don’t try on in stores that I shop regularly. Like Express- it’s where I get my work basics and I know what the cut of their clothes is. I’m usually right about 75% of the time. Good enough. :p

I always try on stuff before I buy it because I never know how it will fill, especially if it’s on the sale rack because I know I’ll be less likely to bring it back if I don’t like it. (“It’s only $10, I can keep it…)

Many dresses are more comfortable than people give them credit for!

  5. You should know that when I write Target, I am saying it in my head as “Tarjay.” … and I think “Targhetto” … hahaha.

I ALWAYS try on clothes before buying them, because my size swings depending on who makes the clothes AND I DETEST MAKING RETURNS, which means I usually don’t, so I darn well better make sure things fit before bringing them home. =)

    Cute dress!!

I used to get crap about wearing a dress at my previous job. Then I’d usually hear “why are you so dressed up???”

As for trying stuff on, I almost always do. I don’t always go to the dressing room, though. If I can try it on over my regular clothes I’ll do that.

i can’t believe someone goes through the trouble of giving you crap about wearing dresses..?!? what the heck, they have NOTHING better to do?!?

    (super cute dress btw!)

    Great dress!

  9. gina says:

Nice dress and nice bargain! I usually try everything on, but occassionally if i find a bargain, I’ll just pick it up and cross my fingers! I also do a lot of online shopping, which means a lot of returns.

Your coworker who gives you grief about wearing dresses would have a field day with me. That’s all I wear! I only have 2 pairs of trouser jeans. The rest are work out clothes, skirts and dresses.

I always try everything on first. I don’t want to waste even $10 if it’s not going to be something I will wear a lot.

  11. J says:

I really want to wear dresses to work but
    a) i have no work appropriate dresses and
    b) I bet I would get made fun of too
But I work will all men and they have trouble with different or new clothing. I wore a ruffly shirt a few weeks ago and they called it my pirate shirt. They are just weird. The dress looks great on you!

  12. J says:

Oh and I always skip the dressing room – I am like a return person all the way. I would rather return it later than try it on some days. And I am working on posting a picture of me in my scarf from this morning!

Depends. If I am alone (ahhhhh…bliss….) I try on, because I suck at actually bringing something back. If I have little people accompanying me (except my oldest – she’s a good fashion advisor) then it’s grab and go.

  14. I try things on if theyre expensive, or if Im not used to the store. Otherwise, I have a pretty good idea of what will fit and what wont. Also, if a top doesnt fit, I just wear a sweater or a jacket with it. Im not fancy enough to care. 🙂

  15. lifestudent says:

I never try on first, everything comes home with me. No matter what 😉

And as for the painting nails thing …

My hubby has a friend whose girlfriend got in trouble for painting her nails on an airplane a few years ago. She gave them slack back when they told her she had to stop!

    Some people 😉

  16. Bethany says:

Unless, it’s a t-shirt, I try it on. Even with shirts that I think will fit and look really cute, a lot of times they just don’t look right once I have them on!

  17. Sarah says:

First, I love Tar-jay! Second, the dress looks adorable on you, and it looks like it fits you perfectly. Was it comfortable to wear?

    • kilax says:

It was mostly comfortable. A few times I had to pull the liner down because it was riding out. And I think it would fit better if I lost a few pounds but it was pretty good 🙂

  18. ChezJulie says:

That is a great dress. You look really cute. Score!

I try everything on. It’s such a pain. I’m pretty hard to fit. When I don’t try stuff on first or order from catalogs I usually regret it.

  19. Megan says:

    a. that dress is A-dorable. love it, keep it.
    b. i am so not girly, but i love wearing dresses in nice weather. they are so much more comfortable! booo to the jerk that gives you grief.
    c. as much as i hate dressing rooms, i hate making returns even more, so trying stuff on first is like the lesser of two evils for me.

  20. Mica says:

Wow, your co-worker needs something better to do with her time than give you grief about wearing dresses. She probably is just jealous that she can’t get over her issue with dresses and wear them casually. (This is actually a problem I have. I feel like I stand out a lot when I wear a dress. Actually, I wore a skirt on Wednesday, and a student asked if I was going to a party later that night.)

I usually try things on because I apparently have body dysmorphia and have no idea what size I am.

  21. Linz says:

So cute!! I HAVE to try EVERYTHING on. Nothing ever fits me right (or so it seems) — and well I’m really bad at taking things back. So it’s cheaper for me to try on at the store! 🙂

  22. Denise says:

LOVE LOVE the dress!!! Looks amazing on you!! Screw the person giving you grief about wearing dresses to work. I love dresses.
Just have a hard time finding ones that like me. 😉

Actually TARGET is Tarjay Boutique. lol
